Strengthening climate system might have an effect on Sister Islands Sunday


The Cayman Islands National Weather Service has said the Sister Islands could be impacted from Sunday and into next week by the weather system, currently named potential cyclone five, located east-southeast of the Windward Islands.

In its tropical outlook issued Wednesday afternoon, the NWS said currently models vary in terms of “both this system’s potential track and intensity” with some models having a potential strong hurricane near the Sister Islands by late night Sunday (4 July) to other models showing the storm making landfall across Hispaniola.

Putin says US sanctions on Russia ‘even did us good’


While not specifically singling out one incident caused by sanctions, he said that, in a way, they had furthered Russian technology.

The US has imposed various sanctions on Russian individuals and businesses since the 2014 illegal annexation of Crimea. The reasons for them vary from human rights abuses to Russia’s hostile foreign policy.

Speaking during a telethon with Russian citizens on Wednesday, Putin said: “We have not just adapted to the sanctions pressure. In some ways, they even did us good: replacing imported technologies with our own gave us an impetus to production. There are other positive things, such as the MIR payment system and the entire strengthening of the financial system.”

The MIR card payment system is a Russian financial services system that became operational in 2014 after the Russian annexation of Crimea and subsequent sanctions against the country.

Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim to rebuild Mexico Metropolis subway overpass for free of charge

Lopez Obrador said during his daily press briefing on Wednesday that he met with Slim, and that the billionaire assured the President that his construction firm “will pay for everything” needed for the reconstruction of Mexico City’s Subway Line 12 overpass.

“He will take care of the reconstruction of the entire [subway line] stretch, making sure that it gets done with all the necessary safety [measures] at no cost to the [Mexican] people and without asking [the government] for a budget,” Lopez Obrador said.

Slim “will not wait for the judicial [final investigation findings],” and will begin coordinating with Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum “so that in a year” the line will be open and operational once again, Lopez Obrador added.

The Carlos Slim Foundation declined to comment on Lopez Obrador’s statement when reached by CNN, as did Mexico City authorities.

‘Reprehensible propaganda’: FO rejects India’s claim of Pakistan’s involvement in Jammu drone attack – Press Release

The Foreign Office on Wednesday rejected Indian Home Minister G Kishan Reddy’s claim that Pakistan could not be ruled out as a possible force behind the recent drone attack on the Indian Air Force base at Jammu airport.

In a statement, the Foreign Office categorically rejected the “irresponsible and misleading statement” as the Indian official chose not to share any evidence in this regard.

“The Indian government has once again leveled serious allegations against Pakistan. This is yet another manifestation of the unsubstantiated propaganda and smear campaign against Pakistan that is characteristic of the Indian government and an obliging Indian media,” the statement said.

This is a familiar Indian ploy to externalise any blame, use baseless allegations against Pakistan as a smokescreen, and seek to undermine the indigenous struggle for self-determination of the Kashmiri people, the Foreign Office said.

The statement underlined that the latest allegations further confirmed what Pakistan has consistently pointed out that the BJP government stages false flag operations to malign Pakistan with terrorism-related allegations for narrow political gains.

The use of the Pakistan card either to win an election or to divert attention from an electoral defeat has also, unfortunately, become standard practice, it noted.

“Pakistan calls upon India to refrain from its reprehensible propaganda campaign as no amount of Indian falsehoods can succeed in diverting attention from India’s serious crimes in [India-occupied Kashmir],” it said.

The minister, speaking to ANI a day earlier, had said that a probe into the incident was underway, but “one cannot deny the role of Pakistan” in the attack.

“There is complete peace in Jammu and Kashmir except for the sponsored violence from Pakistan,” he had said.

Two blasts took place at an Indian Air Force base in Jammu airport during the early hours of Sunday, according to various Indian media reports.

The blasts, as per Indian media, were caused by drones while another IED explosive, meant for use in a possible strike at a “crowded place”, was thwarted, reports quoted Indian police as saying.

One of the bombs, as per the report, damaged the roof of a building in the technical section while the other exploded in an open area.

Following Prime Minister Imran’s budget speech in the National Assembly on Wednesday, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said that the PTI-led government has made life a living hell for the masses in the name of “Naya Pakistan.”

Bilawal said that the premier is trying to make a fool out of people because all the measures his government has taken are in favour of the rich instead of the poor.

“The masses do not want to listen to the prime minister delivering a lecture,” he said. “What sort of a hypocrisy is that?”

The PPP chairman asked the prime minister to give an account of his performance in the last three years because there has been a “historical increase” in poverty and unemployment. 

Bilawal said that the government did not take the Opposition on board when developing the budget, while he also censured the speech delivered by the premier and said that it was “nothing but a mere manipulation of words.”

He also said that the people of Pakistan want to talk about the issues of Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar, and Lahore instead of international issues. 

“The prime minister spoke of economic development but he is inviting immigrants to the country,” Bilawal said. “The PM makes tall claims about the poor but his actions and policies do not correspond. He’s making the rich richer and the poor poorer.”

Bilawal claimed owing to the rising inflation in the country, government employees are forced to commit suicide.

“People want solutions to their problems. They are fed up with [the premier] constantly speaking about the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO),” he said, adding that the new budget will lead to a further decline of the country’s economy. 

He said that the premier would “not be able to get any taxes from the masses” because, in order for people to contribute to the national exchequer, they must have confidence in the state as well as in the democracy.

‘Budget session source of embarrassment’

During his speech in the Parliament today, the PPP chairperson lashed out at the government’s legislative process, accusing it of “rigging”.

“We think that this budget session has become a source of embarrassment for every Pakistani,” he said. “Mr Speaker, I complain to you that you have snatched our rights from us,” added Bhutto.

Bilawal told NA Speaker Asad Qaiser that the Opposition lawmakers expected him to keep the “sanctity of the chair” and act neutrally.

He said if “rigging” had not been carried out yesterday when the finance bill was being approved, the government would not have been able to obtain 172 votes.

He said the Opposition members had more rights than merely reading out their amendments to the bill.

“We have the right to be heard also,” he said. “If our right to vote is not protected then what will become of the protection of the right of ordinary Pakistanis?” he asked.

Bilawal said the Opposition asked for a recount of the votes but the speaker did not oblige him. He said even Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri kept taking time and did not oblige the Opposition.

However, Bilawal admitted that the Opposition members were also to blame for their poor attendance during the session.

The PPP chairperson accused the speaker of not protecting the rights of the Opposition members, adding that “the whole nation saw that if you did not rig [the parliamentary process] then you wouldn’t have received 172 votes”.

Taking a dig at Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, Bhutto said that an “unelected member” kept rejecting the Opposition’s amendments.

“According to Rule 276, if there is a voice vote challenge, you have to count it,” said Bhutto.

Bhutto told the speaker that he challenged the vote during the last phase of the legislation but “you did not listen to me”.

“What else is it, if not rigging?” the PPP leader asked before concluding his speech, leaving and then returning when the foreign minister challenged him to come back. 

Urges PM Khan to tape FM Qureshi’s phone

Earlier in the day, Bilawal, while speaking in the National Assembly, took a dig at the foreign minister and said that the country’s intelligence should tape his telephonic conversations.

“I would like to request the prime minister to order the ISI to tape Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s phone,” taunted Bhutto. “When he used to be our foreign minister, he ran a campaign around the world to make him the prime minister, instead of Yousaf Raza Gillani,” he added.

“That is why we sacked him from the post of foreign minister,” added the PPP leader.

The foreign minister responded to the PPP leader’s accusations, telling him that he also knew Bhutto “since he was a little kid”.

He hit back at the PPP chairperson by referring to him as a “kid”.

“I know you since you were a kid and I also knew your parents as well,” he added.

ISLAMABAD: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday dispelled rumours related to his position in the provincial assembly and said that he is not going to step down before completing his five-year tenure. 

Talking to the media in Islamabad, CM Shah said that people should get rid of all such misunderstandings, adding that he would not leave his post on anyone’s desire.

“I will retain my office as long as the party leadership wants me to do so,” he said. 

The chief minister also talked about other matters and called the raids carried out by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to arrest Aijaz Jhakrani “inappropriate.” 

He said that raids are carried out in Sindh all of a sudden, while in other provinces, courts require a 10-day notice to be issued to the accused.

Criticising the attitude of the Opposition party in the Sindh Assembly, Shah said that members of the PTI made a lot of fuss while presenting the budget in the Sindh Assembly over the last few days.

Opposition lawmakers stage protest outside Sindh Assembly

After creating a ruckus inside the Sindh Assembly by bringing a charpoy to mark the “funeral of democracy” on Monday, Opposition lawmakers — belonging to the PTI — once again staged a sit-in outside of the assembly after they were denied entry on Tuesday, Dawn.com reported.

Per the report, at least eight members of the Opposition were involved in staging the protest today outside the gate of the Sindh Assembly after they were barred from entering the premises for their “disorderly conduct” a day before.

They arrived at the assembly together with some party supporters holding drums and tried bypassing the security guards to enter the building but were stopped. In response, two PTI lawmakers scaled the gate and entered the assembly. Meanwhile, two female members used another gate to enter the premises.

On Monday, chaotic scenes had erupted during the session of the assembly when PTI leader Haleem Adil Sheikh was stopped from speaking before his turn. Akin to that, when PTI leader Firdous Shamim Naqvi tried to speak, he was stopped after which he left the House in resentment.

The move angered the Opposition members, who started chanting slogans and brought a charpoy inside the House to symbolise the “funeral of democracy.”

Expressing his displeasure, Sindh Assembly speaker Agha Siraj Khan Durrani ordered the staff to take the charpoy out of the venue and maintain the decorum, saying that the “Opposition had violated the sanctity of the House.”

Subsequently, eight PTI MPAs were banned from entering the assembly, including Saeed Ahmed, Rabistan Khan, Arsalan Taj Hussain, Muhammad Ali Aziz, Adeel Ahmed, Shah Nawaz Jadoon, Bilal Ahmed and Raja Azhar Khan, per the Dawn.com report.

Supreme Court directs Punjab govt to submit report on Sahiwal tragedy – Press Release


The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Punjab government to submit a report on the Sahiwal tragedy.

Apart from directing the Punjab government to submit a report, a two-member bench, comprising Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Yahya Afridi, also approved the bail of Hafiz Muhammad Usman — the police officer accused of shooting civilians in Sahiwal.

During the hearing, Justice Qazi Faez Isa asked the additional prosecutor general Punjab what had happened to the Sahiwal tragedy report.

“Innocent children were killed in Sahiwal, innocent people were killed due to one phone call,” observed Justice Isa. He added that he was “confused” by what the Punjab government was doing in the province.

“No one is there to ask the killers about the murder of innocent civilians. What did the Punjab government do on the Sahiwal tragedy?” asked the judge.

However, the lawyer for the Punjab government told the bench he thinks that the case was being heard in the high court.

Upon hearing this, the court directed the additional prosecutor to file a report on the Sahiwal tragedy, while the bench also sought a reply in the bail of Hafiz Muhammad Usman.

Four, including two women, killed in CTD operation

In January 2019, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of the Punjab government claimed that a local commander of militant organisation Daesh, and three others, including two women, were killed in an operation near the GT Road.

“Four people, including two women and Daesh local commander Zeeshan, have been killed and one child has been injured in the cross-fire,” a CTD spokesperson said. The suspects were kidnappers and three children were recovered from them, police said.

“Three terrorists managed to escape and have been identified as Shahid Jabbar, Abdul Rehman and their accomplice,” the spokesperson added.

According to the spokesperson, “A CTD team tried to intercept a car and motorcycle near the toll plaza, however, the people in the car starting firing at them.”

The CTD maintained that the deceased were high-level targets who were also involved in the kidnapping of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s son.

“The operation was conducted as part of the one in Faisalabad which took place on January 16,” the spokesperson further said.

However, eyewitnesses said the people in the car did not fire at officials, nor were any explosives recovered from the vehicle. Meanwhile, the surviving children said that those killed were their parents and a sister and not kidnappers as earlier claimed by the police.

The CTD officials involved in the alleged extrajudicial killing were taken into custody on the orders of Punjab chief minister Usman Buzdar.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider said on Wednesday that it would be foolish for Pakistan to ask the US to arbitrate on the Kashmir issue with India.

“The government of Pakistan cannot take matters like this after India’s usurpation of occupied Kashmir on August 5,” said Haider while addressing a press conference in Islamabad. He said that giving speeches in the United Nations was not enough.

The AJK PM then said that it was foolish to seek America’s arbitration on the Kashmir issue.

“Pakistanis and Kashmiris lost their blood on the Line of Control. But our foreign minister is there to only tell stories to children,” said Haider.

Haider claimed that money laundering was happening in AJK and PM Imran Khan’s office was being used for that.

The AJK premier also spoke about the upcoming elections in the region. He said that the polls that will be held on July 25 are being fought on two ideologies, adding that one was of the PML-N’s and the other of the Opposition. 

AJK legislative assembly elections

Haider, who belongs to the PML-N, is seeking re-election to the AJK Legislative Assembly. 

The 11th General Elections of AJK will be held on July 25, the region’s election commission had announced earlier this month.

According to the schedule announced by Chief Election Commissioner retired Justice Abdul Rasheed Sulehria, the nomination papers will be filed by the candidates before the returning officers on or before June 6 up till 4pm while the scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted the very next day am onwards and the lists of validly nominated candidates will be publicised on the same day.

The last date for filing appeals before the election commission against the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers by returning officers has been fixed for June 27 before 2pm, while the hearing of appeals will be conducted from June 28 to 29, with the decisions announced on June 30 and July 1.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Wednesday took their National Assembly fight to Twitter after they were seemingly unable to wrap it up in the Parliament.

Bilawal, during today’s NA session, had said: “I would like to request the prime minister to order the ISI to tape Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s phone.”

“When he used to be our foreign minister, he ran a campaign around the world to make him the prime minister, instead of Yousaf Raza Gillani,” he added.

“That is why we sacked him from the post of foreign minister,” added the PPP leader.

The foreign minister responded to the PPP leader’s accusations, telling him that he also knew Bilawal “since he was a little kid”.

He hit back at the PPP chairperson by referring to him as a “kid”.

“I know you since you were a kid, and I also knew your parents as well,” he added.

Later in the day, FM Qureshi, taking to Twitter, said let Pakistan remember that the PPP chairman had openly called for the tapping the phone of an elected parliamentarian, which was against democratic norms.

“Let Pakistan remember that today, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of National Assembly Human Rights Committee and preacher of democratic norms and traditions, openly called for phone tapping of an elected parliamentarian,” he said.

“So much for fundamental rights, rule of law, and democracy,” he added.

Quickly responding to the foreign minister, Bilawal said: “Let the record be clear that the Foreign Minister of Pakistan does not have a sense of humour.”

RAWALPINDI:  The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Wednesday visited the National Defence University (NDU), Islamabad and addressed the participants of the National Security and War Course (NSWC) 21.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in this regard, speaking on the occasion, the COAS dilated upon the evolving strategic and regional environment. 

Pakistan stands for peace within and all around, as it looks forward to acting as a bridge between regions, the COAS said. 

Expounding on Pakistan’s support to the Afghan peace process, the COAS said that spoilers of peace in Afghanistan risk regional instability. Expressing resolute support to the people of IIOJ&K, he stressed a peaceful and durable solution to the Kashmir issue in line with relevant UN resolutions and aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Sharing his vision for the  Pakistan Army, Gen Bajwa underscored the need for continuous evaluation of existing doctrine and corresponding strategy to effectively deal with the evolving threats in various domains, the statement said.

The COAS termed professionalism, competence and devotion to duty as hallmarks of the Pakistan Army and emphasised realistic and futuristic training for maintaining perpetual operational readiness. 

Force modernisation and induction of advanced technologies are imperative for maintaining qualitative edge over the adversary, the COAS remarked. 

A well-equipped, well-trained and motivated army having unwavering support of its people can surmount any challenge, the COAS emphasised, adding that the forces that wish to undermine the unbreakable bond between the Armed Forces and the nation are bound to fail.

Congratulating the participants on the successful completion of their course, Gen Bajwa advised them to stay focused on attaining professional excellence while remaining abreast with revolutionary advancements in warfare which are redefining national security, the statement said. 

Earlier, upon his arrival, the COAS was received by President NDU, Lieutenant General Muhammad Saeed.

KARACHI: President Wifaq Ul Madaris and prominent scholar Maulana Abdur Razzaq Iskander passed away in Karachi at the age of 86 on Wednesday.

The deceased was born in 1935 in District Abottabad’s Kokal village.

He was serving as the senior Hadith Professor of Jamia Uloom-ul-Islamia Binori Town, a spokesperson of Jamia Binori Town told APP.

Razzaq had been undergoing treatment at a local hospital in the metropolis for the past two weeks.

The Namaz-e-Janaza of the deceased was offered at 10pm at Jamia-ul-uloom Binori Town in Karachi.

Responding to the development, Governor Sindh Imran Ismail expressed deep sorrow and grief over the demise of the prominent scholar.

The governor prayed to Allah to give eternal peace to the departed soul and accept all his services for the cause of religion and grant patience to the bereaved family.

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa also expressed his heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of the religious scholar. 

“May Allah bless his soul and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss. Ameen,” the army chief said.

ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi on Wednesday inaugurated one megawatt solar PV (photovoltaic) panels at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, making it among the few presidencies in the world fully powered by green energy.

The solarisation project, under the President’s Green Initiative, was kicked off in partnership with Engro Corporation where a net metering system will contribute 100% surplus energy to the national grid.

The initiative will lead to an annual decrease of 1,450 tonnes of CO2 emissions and an annual contribution of Rs32 million to the national exchequer.

Addressing the ceremony, President Alvi said Pakistan remains committed to realising its untapped renewable energy potential — in hydro, solar, and wind — and to shift its energy mix to 60% clean energy by 2030.

He stressed the need to utilise alternative sources for power generation to fully achieve the goals of clean and green energy.

Switching to renewable energy is vital to reduce the impact of climate change, he added.

President Alvi said that the Billion Tree Tsunami project by the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan was another step in the right direction to preserve the natural resources of the country facing vulnerability to climate change.

He said a balanced ecosystem was important to control the depletion of natural resources.

In line with further green measures for the Aiwan-e-Sadr, the President said plantation of 10,000 saplings was under consideration besides raising a vertical forest on one of its walls.

Also, the restoration of roof-window panels of the presidency that were earlier meant to get sunlight is on the cards to save natural resources, he added.

He said plantation at select parks of Islamabad following the Miyawaki style would prove conducive for the environment.

The president said private industrial setups also had a responsibility to contribute towards the betterment of society.

He lauded the efforts of Engro Corporation in supporting the President’s Green Initiative and said the inclusion of the private sector in development endeavours could prove helpful in several areas, particularly energy security.

President Engro Corporation Ghias Khan said a green strategy was an important pillar of development, adding that the contribution of Engro would help mitigate environmental hazards.

Petrol price in Pakistan goes up by Rs2 starting July 1 – Press Release

The price of petrol in Pakistan will go up by Rs2 per litre starting July 1, according to Special Assistant to Prime Minister of Pakistan on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill.

Gill said that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had recommended an increase of Rs6.05, but Prime Minister Imran Khan rejected it, instead approving an increase of Rs2 per litre for petrol.

The premier’s aide said that the recommended increase by OGRA was in accordance with a rise in fuel prices in the international market.

According to Gill, the recommendation also included an increase of Rs3.44 for the price of diesel but the prime minister approved an increase of Rs1.44.

A notification issued by the Ministry of Finance said that kerosene oil would see an increase of Rs3.86, whereas light diesel oil would go up by Rs3.72.

Tarin warns of hike in prices

Earlier in June, Minister for Finance Shaukat Tarin had indicated that the prices of petroleum products will increase in the coming month as talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) continue over the stabilisation of revenue collection.

Talking on Geo News programme “Naya Pakistan”, he said the petroleum levy would be increased up to Rs600 billion in the coming fiscal year so the levy will have to be jacked up in the range of Rs20 to Rs25 per litre, while currently a Rs5 per litre levy was being charged.

When asked whether Pakistan will pull out of the IMF programme if the Fund rejects the proposals and sticks to its demands, the finance minister said Pakistan will not exit from the programme.

He said Saudi Arabia had agreed to provide oil on deferred payments, but it could not be ascertained how much oil Pakistan will get.
