ECC approves funding for Roosevelt Hotel’s liabilities – Press Release

Economic Coordination Committee approves funds to meet Roosevelt Hotel’s liabilities, including payment of local taxes and utilities.
ECC approves a Rs215 million Technical Supplementary Grant in favour of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Also approves a TGS amounting to Rs50,100 million for COVID-19 vaccines and ancillary goods and services.

ISLAMABAD: The cabinet’s Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) on Tuesday approved the funding of liabilities of the Roosevelt Hotel Corporation, including payment of local taxes and utilities.

A summary of the funds required was presented by the Aviation Division before the ECC, the meeting of which presided over by the Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Shaukat Tarin, a press statement issued by the Finance Ministry said.

According to the statement, PIA-IL requested the ECC to utilise the $10 million available with the National Bank of Pakistan to clear the immediate financial liabilities.

The ECC approved the summary with a direction to exercise due diligence in meeting emergent liabilities and submit a utilisation report, before the forum, regarding funding support by the government duly verified by the external auditors of the entity.

The committee also ordered the Aviation Division to engage a world-class consultant to meet the financial and operational challenges faced by the Roosevelt Hotel.

Furthermore, the ECC approved a Technical Supplementary Grant (TSG) in favour of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), amounting to Rs215 million.

The money was allocated for local government elections in Cantonment Boards, thereby enabling the ECP to perform its constitutional obligations.

The ECC also approved a TSG amounting to Rs50,100 million for extending rupee cover against financing by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) of US $300 million for the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines and ancillary goods and services.

The ECC meeting was attended by several federal ministers including Minister for Privatisation Muhammad Mian Soomro, Minister for National Food Security & Research Syed Fakhar Imam, and Minister for Maritime Affairs Syed Ali Zaidi.

The Adviser to the PM on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood, Federal Secretaries, Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), and Chairman Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) also participated in the meeting.

Pakistan strongly condemns attempt by Houthi militants to target Abha International Airport in Saudi Arabia, says Foreign Office.
FO, on Pakistan’s behalf, wishes speedy recovery to those injured in the terror bid.
At least eight people were wounded in Houthi drone strikes on Saudi Arabia’s Abha airport on Monday.

ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office on Tuesday issued a statement condemning the recent attempt by Houthi militants to target Abha International Airport in the Asir province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

“Pakistan strongly condemns the recent attempt by the Houthi militants to target Abha International Airport in Saudi Arabia, which was intercepted by the coalition forces,” read the statement.

The FO, on the country’s behalf, wished speedy recovery to those injured in the terror bid and called for an immediate cessation of “the attacks that violate the international law and threatening peace and security in the KSA and region”.

The statement said that Pakistan reaffirms its full support and solidarity with the KSA as a Muslim state against any threat to the state’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Eight wounded in Houthi drone strikes

At least eight people were wounded on Monday in Houthi drone strikes on Saudi Arabia’s Abha airport that also damaged a civilian airplane, Reuters reported citing the Saudi state TV.

The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthi group in Yemen said earlier that it intercepted a Houthi drone, targeting Abha International Airport.

Shrapnel was scattered in the vicinity of the airport, the coalition said.

Ekhbaria TV said a second armed drone was intercepted, but debris wounded eight people and damaged a civilian airplane inside the airport. It did not give further details.

The Houthis did not claim responsibility for the attack, but the Iran-aligned group regularly fires drones and missiles into Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi-led military coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015, backing forces of the ousted government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi fighting the Houthis.

ISLAMABAD: A meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Appointment Of Judges In Superior Courts on Tuesday unanimously approved constitutional amendments that support the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court in accordance with their seniority.

The meeting was held under the Chairmanship of Senator Farooq Hamid Naek at the Parliament House.

The committee “unanimously approved the constitutional amendments in the relevant provision of the Constitution regarding judiciary proposed by the chairman of committee Senator Farooq H Naek”, read a press release issued after the meeting.

The Committee decided that the appointment of the judges to the Supreme Court will be made in accordance with their seniority “which shall be determined with reference to their date of appointment as a judge of the high court and in case the dates of the appointments of the judges are the same then the decision will be made on the basis of their age”, said the handout.

The committee decided that the ad-hoc or acting judges in the Supreme Court will be appointed subject to confirmation by the parliamentary committee.

The committee also approved an amendment in Clause 3 of Article 184 of the Constitution, according to which when suo motu powers in human rights cases are exercised by the Supreme Court, the case would be heard by three judges of the Supreme Court and an appeal against the order can be filed within 30 days, to be decided by a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court within 60 days.

It was further decided that if an appeal against an order under this Article has been made, the order appealed against shall not be implemented, pending decision of the appeal.

The parliamentary committee also approved the recommendation that the age of retirement of a high court judge be enhanced from the existing 62 years to 65 years, as in the case of a judge of the Supreme Court.

The committee also approved an amendment in Article 209 of the Constitution proposed by the chairman, deciding that a reference on account of misconduct against a judge of the superior judiciary will be decided by the Supreme Judicial Council within 90 days.

It also discussed Article 175-A of the Constitution dealing with the manner of the appointment of the judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and composition of Supreme Judicial Council.

It was decided that the issue will be further deliberated upon in the next meeting of the Committee.

The Committee also decided to invite the Federal Minister for Law and Justice in its next meeting.

The meeting was attended by Senators Azam Nazeer Tarar and Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti, MNAs Ali Muhammad Khan, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, and Rana Sana Ullah Khan; and Secretary Senate Mohammad Qasim Samad Khan.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Tuesday heavily criticised the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) “confused” strategy to oust the government and slammed the alliance for “wasting” his party’s time.

Bilawal, addressing a press conference in Kashmore, advised the alliance to first resign from the parliament and then head to Islamabad for the long march against the government.

Differences between the PPP and the PDM became clear earlier when the former refused to resign from the parliament and asked the alliance to continue their anti-government struggle in the parliament. However, PDM rejected the idea.

Later, PPP parted ways with the alliance.

Bilawal proposed that if the Opposition was serious in its intentions to oust the government, then it should help PPP move a no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar and then Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The PPP chairman stressed if the PDM remains uncertain in its policies, it will also confuse the masses. “However, PPP is clear in its stance to send PM Imran Khan home with the public’s power.”

The PPP chairman said PDM was headed in the right direction when its policies were in line with PPP’s advice.

In a separate press conference in Kandhkot, Bilawal, speaking on the Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA), said PPP rejects the government’s attempts to muzzle the media, claiming that PTI wanted to curb all criticism directed towards it.

“The PMDA is PTI’s desperate and dangerous attempt to have a pliant media, and to stifle any attempt at alternative sources of journalism on blogs and social media.”

“The Pakistan Peoples Party condemns this black law and all attempts to muzzle the media,” Bilawal said.

Bilawal demanded immediate and transparent elections in the country and said that after witnessing PM Imran Khan’s and the previous government’s performance, the people of Pakistan now want a young leadership.

“This is the leadership you will very soon see,” he said, “You will soon witness people joining PPP in large numbers.”

The party chairman said PPP was not taking any breaks and emphasised that it was constantly preparing for elections — in line with Bilawal’s earlier remarks where he had claimed that elections could take place at any moment.

Bilawal further demanding a fair and transparent election to be held in the country as soon as possible claimed that the incumbent government was “imposed” on the people through a “rigged” election.

Travellers can get booster jabs starting Wednesday: Ministry of Health – Press Release

The Ministry of National Health Services has said that individuals travelling abroad can get a COVID booster jab across Pakistan from tomorrow.

According to the eligibility criteria, issued by the National Command and Operation Centre, every individual of 12 years and above, with the mandatory requirement of a specific vaccine, will be able to get additional dose(s) after showing valid travel documents and evidence of the intended travel.

The individuals will be required to submit a copy of this evidence at the relevant vaccination centre.

The criteria also covers the categories of travellers which may be inoculated with the booster jab.

These categories include workers going abroad for employment, students going abroad for enrolment at educational institutes, Pakistani citizens who reside in other countries and require evidence of specific mandatory vaccine for their return to the country of residence, those who travel for business or official purposes, and tourists and Hajj or Umrah pilgrims.

As per the guidelines, the fee of the booster dose of vaccines is Rs1,270 per dose, which can be deposited at any National Bank of Pakistan branch.

“The cost, Rs 1,270 per dose, will be deposited in NBP (as specified by M/o NHSR&C) in in the Head of Account; C-Non-Tax Revenue, C02-Receipts from Civil Administration and other functions, C027-Community Services, Receipts; and C02721-Sale proceeds of sera and vaccines,” read the guidelines.

The guidelines further state that dedicated vaccination centres will be nominated in major cities for the administration of booster doses only. Travellers present in Islamabad can get the vaccine booster shots from the vaccination centre at Rural Health Center Tarlai.

A notification issued by the Ministry of National Health Services on Saturday stated that the people who plan to travel abroad will now be able to get booster shots.

LAHORE: Unvaccinated individuals will be unable to avail the facilities of transport, petrol refueling, and restaurant services in Lahore from tomorrow (Wednesday) onward, reported Geo News Tuesday.

Entrances at shopping malls will be restricted to only vaccinated people, and the unvaccinated “will be arrested immediately”, Geo News said.

Authorities have also decided not to reopen places sealed due to violation of COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures anytime soon.

In addition, the government has decided to impose Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability Act, 2006, on unvaccinated government employees in Lahore.

Furthermore, according to Lahore Electric Supply Company, salaries of unvaccinated employees will not be disbursed.

A spokesperson for LESCO, Afshan Mudassir, said that out of 23,000 employees, 5,000 have not got themselves vaccinated.

“The salaries have been stopped in light of the decision by the NCOC (National Command and Operation Centre,” she said.

The spokesperson said that employees had been warned in this regard “numerous times”.

Unvaccinated people to be denied petrol from Sept 1

Last Friday, the government had announced that unvaccinated people in Lahore will not be provided petrol starting September.

Following the district administration’s orders, banners were placed at petrol stations across the metropolis, saying that unvaccinated persons will not be provided fuel from September 1.

“No vaccination, no service,” read a banner outside a Lahore petrol pump.

Entrance to shopping malls restaurants, use of public transport

The orders had come after the directives passed by Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar, who said that those who have not been fully vaccinated against coronavirus will not be allowed to use public transport, enter shopping malls, or visit restaurants after September 30.

The National Command and Operation Centre chief had added that a single dose vaccination will be mandatory for entry in the malls and restaurants before the deadline.

Those who have not been fully vaccinated against coronavirus will also not be allowed to use public transport from October 15.

ISLAMABAD: Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan Sikandar Sultan Raja and Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP) members have raised concerns and questions regarding the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), reported Geo News Tuesday.

A foreign company demonstrated different types of EVMs to the ECP.

The ECP was briefed about the different functions, use, hardware and software used in the EVMs.

After the demonstration, the ECP chief and members informed the foreign company about their concerns regarding the use of EVMs in the polling process.

At this, the foreign company assured the ECP that the EVMs can be further improved in the light of their concerns.

ECP Chief Raja said that the commission believes in the transparency and impartiality of the polling process, and is of the view that technology should be used in the elections.

‘Electronic voting machine ready’

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz had announced the development of the electronic voting machine at a press conference in Islamabad on August 3, saying that the machine was ready to use.

The minister said that no tampering can be done with the machine since it does not involve the use of the internet.

Later, Faraz also invited Free and Fair Election Network and Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency to inspect the newly-developed EVMs.
