Heavily armed rival gangs began clashing and seizing territory in Port-au-Prince with new intensity in late April, forcing more than 16,800 people, including children, to abandon their homes and shelter in temporary accommodation. The flare in violence has spilled into dozens of neighborhoods, with hundreds of families caught in the crossfire.
At least 92 of the 188 people reportedly killed between April 24 and May 26 were non-gang members, with another 113 people injured, 12 missing and 49 kidnapped for ransom, according to OCHA.
But given the restricted access to the districts where territorial clashes are ongoing, the office warned the number of people killed could be much higher.
The intensity and duration of the violence has wracked the country as it is still reeling from the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse last July, and the power vacuum his killing has left behind. The UN Security Council, meanwhile, is preparing to debate the future of the UN’s longtime presence in…
Writing in a New York Times op-ed, Biden said the US goal is “to see a democratic, independent, sovereign and prosperous Ukraine with the means to deter and defend itself against further aggression.”
He said the new shipment of arms would “enable them to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield in Ukraine.”
The officials said the systems that the US is sending Ukraine will be equipped with munitions that will allow Ukraine to launch rockets about 49 miles. That is far less than the systems’ maximum range, but far greater than anything Ukraine has been sent to date.
The new security assistance package, to be announced officially on Wednesday, will also include air surveillance radars, additional Javelin anti-tank weapons, anti-armor weapons, artillery rounds, helicopters, tactical vehicles and spare parts to help the Ukrainians continue maintaining the equipment, the officials said.
Still, Biden sought to spell out clearly what the US aims in Ukraine were and was careful to…

Saint-Paul-lez-Durance, France — From a small hill in the southern French region of Provence, you can see two suns. One has been blazing for four-and-a-half billion years and is setting. The other is being built by thousands of human minds and hands, and is — far more slowly — rising. The last of the real sun’s evening rays cast a magical glow over the other — an enormous construction site that could solve the biggest existential crisis in human history.
RCIPS Firearms Response Unit officers in their new uniforms
(CNS): The RCIPS Firearms Response Unit is rolling out a new uniform for officers that will set them apart from the rest of the service. A press release issued Tuesday said the new uniform, which they will begin wearing in June, will make these armed officers more easily identifiable. The new grey colours will replace the existing navy blue and will stand out from the uniforms of the rest of the RCIPS, as well as other local law enforcement and government agencies.
The RCIPS said the design and features of the new uniforms were specifically selected following a rigorous research process conducted with FRU team leaders, in consultation with the members of the unit and the police commissioner. The new FRU uniform is primarily grey with dark coloured accessories. It includes a long-sleeved shirt for operational use or a darker grey polo shirt for standard duties. The shirts also feature the RCIPS logo and the name…
Jim Parks won his first Test cap as a specialist batsman – but became an England regular in the mid-1960s after taking up wicketkeeping
Former England wicketkeeper-batsman Jim Parks, one of Sussex’s greatest players, has died at the age of 90.
Parks, who featured in 46 Tests between 1954 and 1968, had been England’s oldest surviving male Test cricketer at the time of his death.
He came from a cricketing family – his father Jim senior, uncle Harry and son Bobby all played first-class cricket.
After 23 years at Sussex, Parks ended his career at Somerset, finishing with 36,673 first-class runs from 739 games.
Born In Haywards Heath, Sussex, Parks was first capped by England as a specialist batsman, with a reputation as an excellent fielder, for a one-off Test in 1954.
He only took up wicketkeeping full-time in 1958, nearly a decade after his first-class debut, when Sussex needed a keeper to replace the retiring Rupert Webb.
But taking the gloves soon earned him a recall to the national side,…
Essex are currently fifth in the County Championship Division One table
Essex have been placed under a “non-compliance process” and face sanctions from the England and Wales Cricket Board having “fallen significantly short” on board diversity targets.
The ECB says Essex “do not yet have a clear action plan to deliver change within an appropriate timescale”.
The Division One side must now provide an updated action plan to the ECB.
Sanctions may be considered against Essex if “sufficient progress is not made” within agreed deadlines.
However, 80% of county organisations (40 out of 50 entities) have met their board diversity targets.
The ECB had set out a target of at least 30% female and locally representative ethnicity on boards by the end of April 2022.
More than 30 organisations have appointed at least one new non-executive director (NED) to their board in the last six months.
The county network at an aggregate level have surpassed the representation target on boards, with 31% female (up…
(CNS): The scientists visiting from the UK to help the Ministry of Sustainability and Climate Resiliency with a climate risk assessment for the Cayman Islands said they were really impressed with the local engagement on climate change issues. The ministry is hoping to maintain that engagement since public consultation is a critical part of the development of a policy to protect these islands from the impending adverse effects of climate change.
As part of the risk assessment process, a survey has been launched to gain more insight into public knowledge, attitudes and practices related to climate change. The short, anonymous survey takes around ten minutes to complete and includes five sections: demographic information, general climate change knowledge, personal beliefs and practices, media use and climate action.
Following a two-day workshop and a public meeting last week, Principal Scientist and Lead Advisor on climate…
Texas shooting made Murray ‘angry’ and ‘incredibly upset’
British tennis player Andy Murray said the deaths of 19 children and two teachers in a shooting at a school in Texas last week made him “angry” and “incredibly upset”.
Murray was a pupil at Dunblane Primary School in Scotland in March 1996, when 16 children and a teacher were murdered by gunman Thomas Hamilton.
“I think there’s been over 200 mass shootings in America this year and nothing changes,” he told BBC Sport.
“I can’t understand that.”
The shooting in Uvalde on 24 May has provoked new calls for gun control measures in the United States, although several senior Republicans have already expressed their opposition to tighter rules on gun ownership, such as background checks.
On Friday, former US president Donald Trump told the National Rifle Association’s annual conference that decent Americans should be allowed firearms todefend themselves against “evil”.
And Texas senator Ted Cruz has accused Democrats and the media of…
Watch: Piecing together fan videos of crowding and pepper spray at Champions League final
Uefa has commissioned an independent report into the scenes outside the ground that delayed Saturday’s Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid.
Kick-off at the Stade de France in Paris was delayed by over half an hour with Liverpool ticket-holders seen waiting in huge queues, and French police later using tear gas on crowds.
On Monday,French authorities complained of what they called “industrial-scale” ticket fraud amid a row over the game’s policing.
French sports ministerAmelie Oudea-Casterasaid there were “no problems” regarding Madrid supporters and the Spanish side had controlled their travelling fans better than Liverpool, who had let their supporters “out in the wild”.
Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has since written a letter to Oudea-Castera “demanding an apology” for her comments.
Werner wrote: “The events that occurred in and around the Stade de France on…
New captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum will lead England in the first Test against New Zealand on Thursday

Brendon McCullum has changed English cricket once. Now he’s being paid to do it again.
Previously, it was inadvertent. His batting, captaincy and the New Zealand team he led to the final of the 2015 World Cup formed the inspiration for England’s turnaround from one-day no-hopers to world champions in the space of four years.
This time, McCullum’s influence will come from inside the dressing room – his task to revive a Test side that have been battered and bruised to the tune of one win in 17 matches.
At a stroke, his appointment made England trendy again. Not only through the excitement of what a…

Todd Boehly attended Chelsea’s Premier League game against Watford on 22 May
Chelsea’s £4.25bn sale to a consortium led by American investor Todd Boehly has been completed.
The club was put up for sale in March before previous owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned over his links to Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Chelsea had been operating under a special government licence which would have expired on 31 May.
Boehly said in a statement that he was “honoured” and “wanted to make fans proud”.
His consortium fought off 11 serious rivals to become the new owners, in a sale process that started on 2 March and comprised more than 250 enquiries.
“We are honoured to become the new custodians of Chelsea Football Club,” he said.
“We’re all in – 100% – every minute of every match. Our vision as owners is clear: we want to make the fans proud.
“Along with our commitment to developing the youth squad and acquiring the best talent, our plan of action is to invest in the club for the long term and…
(CNN) — Sassy, hardy, and vicious: that’s how yellow-eyed penguins are fondly described by the people who spend their days working with them.
“(They) aren’t as cute and cuddly as they look,” says Jason van Zanten, conservation manager at Penguin Place in the Otago Peninsula, New Zealand. “They can give you a really hard slap.”
Locally called hoiho, which means “noise shouter” in Māori, the yellow-eyed penguin is the largest of the penguin species that live and breed on New Zealand’s mainland.
But its population has fallen dramatically in the past 30 years due to increasing threats from predators, climate change and disease. “In the last 10 or so years, we’ve lost about three-quarters of the population,” says van Zanten.
Now, conservationists are rallying to save the species. Penguin Place — where van Zanten works — provides a place for hoiho to rest and recuperate while nearby, The Wildlife Hospital, Dunedin treats those with serious injury and disease.

Rafael Nadal set up a French Open quarter-final against long-time rival Novak Djokovic after winning an absorbing five-set battle with Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in Paris.
Spain’s Nadal, 35, dropped sets for the first time at this year’s event but recovered to win 3-6 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-3.
Top seed Djokovic moved up a gear to beat 15th seed Diego Schwartzman.
The 35-year-old Serb produced his best level so far in the tournament to win 6-1 6-3 6-3 in his fourth-round match.
Fifth seed Nadal fixed up a 59th career meeting with Djokovic – a men’s record – by beating ninth seed Auger-Aliassime later on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Alexander Zverev booked his place in the quarter-finals despite a patchy display against Spanish qualifier Bernabe Zapata Miralles as the third seed triumphed 7-6 (13-11) 7-5 6-3.
Sergio Perez won an incident-packed, wet-dry Monaco Grand Prix after his Red Bull team outfoxed rivals Ferrari.
The Mexican rose from third to the lead during a part of the race in wet conditions after the start was delayed for an hour after a downpour of rain.
Red Bull’s strategy also vaulted Max Verstappen from fourth to third, behind Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz but ahead of the Dutchman’s title rival Charles Leclerc.
As a result, Verstappen extended his championship lead to nine points.
Perez, meanwhile, is only six points behind Leclerc, after a strong weekend in which he outpaced Verstappen in qualifying and drove superbly in the race to deliver on Red Bull’s improvisational strategy calls.
After the race, Ferrari lodged protests against both Perez and Verstappen on the basis that they crossed the white line on the exit of the pit lane after their second pit stops.
If they are upheld, the Red Bull drivers’ results are under threat.
Nottingham Forest ended their 23-year wait for Premier League football with a narrow win over Huddersfield Town in the Championship play-off final – a victory worth about £170m – at Wembley.
Promotion back to the top flight caps a brilliant turnaround to their season, which had started with six defeats in seven.
Levi Colwill’s own goal from James Garner’s cross was the decisive moment.
Town improved after the break but struggled to create a big chance.
Their best opportunity saw Harry Toffolo booked for diving in the area by referee Jon Moss, officiating for the final time before retiring, and, although replays suggested Jack Colback had made some contact, it was not overturned by VAR.
Forest held out in the face of mounting pressure to spark scenes of jubilation and end their two-decade exile from the Premier League.
Steve Cooper has completely turned the club’s fortunes around after taking over from the sacked Chris Hughton in September.
Real Madrid are champions of Europe for a record 14th time
Liverpool’s bid to claim the Champions League trophy for the seventh time ended in bitter disappointment as Vinicius Jr’s second-half winner gave Real Madrid victory in Paris.
Jurgen Klopp’s side ran into a one-man wall of defiance as Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced one of the great individual performances to thwart Liverpool time and again.
Mohamed Salah, seeking revenge for his early departure through injury in the 2018 final against Real, was denied three times by Courtois who was simply unbeatable.
The victory also sees Carlo Ancelotti make history by becoming the first coach to win a fourth Champions League title.
Real were always a threat and the decisive moment came after 59 minutes when Vinicius stole in unmarked at the far post to score.
This was also a final marred by chaotic scenes outside Stade de France with thousands of Liverpool fans, some targeted with pepper spray by French police, unable to get…
(CNN) — Traveling to a paradise on Earth doesn’t necessarily require a long, arduous or perilous journey.
In fact, an unspoiled landscape reminiscent of a fairytale is barely five hours from Boston and about four hours from the United Kingdom. It’s a land where waterfalls cascade down iridescent green slopes; where roads are rimmed with hydrangea hedges; and where craggy coasts are blanketed with black sand beaches.
A lost-in-time quality prevails, whether it’s a hamlet of stone dwellings linked by cobbled paths, or locals who remain true to the old ways of planting crops on fertile plains at the base of sheer cliffs, or riding horse-drawn carts to deliver milk to the cheese factory.

E-commerce giant Alibaba reported better-than-expected earnings and sales for its most recent quarter Thursday.
Shares of Alibaba(BABA) were up nearly 15% in late morning trading after the company reported that revenue rose 9% from a year ago, topping analysts’ forecasts. Alibaba said the strength was due to solid online and mobile shopping demand as well as a 12% jump in sales from its massive Alibaba Cloud unit.
Alibaba said that it now has more than 1 billion active customers in China, the first time the company has surpassed that milestone. Alibaba has more than 1.3 billion customers worldwide.
Alibaba charman and CEO Daniel Zhang said in a press release that Alibaba was able to post solid results “despite macro challenges that impacted supply chains and consumer sentiment.”
The company hopes supply chain disruptions could soon be ending. Alibaba chief financial officer Toby Xu said during a conference call with analysts Thursday that “we certainly are seeing signs of improvement…
“I would only wish you not lose this feeling of unity,” he said, calling again for maximum pressure on Moscow.
Three months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leaders from Europe and the United States emphasize that they remain committed to sticking with unprecedented sanctions in an attempt to force President Vladimir Putin to pull its troops out.
“I am very worried about what a recession in Europe would do to European resolve to stick with it and continue to escalate the sanctions,” Jason Furman, a Harvard professor who previously served as President Barack Obama’s top economic adviser, told CNN Business.
Already, cracks are starting to form in Europe’s united front. Hungary’s Viktor Orban, who was not present in Davos, has led dissenters in blocking the European Union’s plans for an oil embargo on Russia, a bid to cut off a major source of revenue for Moscow. The goal of ultimately getting rid of Russian gas could prove even more difficult.
Wigan Warriors stunned Huddersfield Giants with a late try to win the Challenge Cup for a record-extending 20th time at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Matty Peet’s side were favourites coming into the contest, but needed Liam Marshall’s score to seal victory.
Ricky Leutele and Chris McQueen crossed for Huddersfield, in between Harry Smith’s try, for a 10-6 half-time lead.
Jermaine McGilllvary edged Giants 14-12 back in front after Jai Field had gone over, but Marshall had the final say.
It was a fitting finish to a hard-fought final which ebbed and flowed, but ultimately Wigan came out on top for their first Challenge Cup triumph since 2013.
The two sides came through contrasting semi-finals earlier this month, with Huddersfield comfortably despatching Hull KR, while Wigan held off a valiant St Helens fightback in their tie.

DUBLIN, May 27, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The “Parking Management Market by Solution, by Service, by Deployment, by Parking Site, by Off-Street Parking Site, by Application, by Region, and Segment Forecasts, 2022-2030” report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.
The global parking management market size is expected to reach USD 10.14 billion by 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 11.1% from 2022 to 2030.
Growing demand for smart parking sensors, increasing need for parking spaces, and favorable government initiatives are some of the factors contributing to the market growth. Smart technologies are experiencing tremendous growth in the parking management system, including parking guidance systems, automated parking, and parking reservation systems.
In addition to these technologies, the demand for security and safety of parked vehicles is also increasing rapidly among vehicle owners, which is propelling the procurement of a parking surveillance system. This will create a substantial market space for parking management companies to grow over the years.
Several car park mobile applications have included the feature to reserve a vehicle park space and make payments through mobile wallets. It allows users to save meaningful time spent searching for vacant spaces and provides parking enforcement options, such as adding remote parking spaces and providing parking information to users.
For instance, in December 2021, T2 Systems, a parking management solutions provider, implemented T2Mobile Pay, a browser-based parking solution, in Houston City Center, so that the visitors could pay for parking quickly and easily on their mobile phones using this solution. This solution will increase mobile payment adoption and customer satisfaction. These features are anticipated to further increase the demand for parking management solutions over the forecast period.
The increasing availability of integrated automated solutions and advancements in wireless technology are anticipated to…

Ronald Anderson for Governor of California 2022 (Graphic: Business Wire)
“Hi I’m Ronald A. Anderson. I’m a candidate running for California Governor 2022.
I am very concerned on the direction of our country and state is going. There are more problems than ever before. The system we now have on Crime is no good at all. I will change this right away for the better. We must LOWER taxes. If people start giving out raises, we are not accomplishing nothing but only driving the cost of living even higher and this is harmful to everyone (And they’ll just do it again to us and cause another upset) This needs to stop right now and the people need to realize this but fast.
I have a lot of great ideas that will solve the many problems of today’s issues that we now face. It’s unbelievable what we have all gone through and endured and it’s not that hard to fix. I see some things being fixed in one day while others will take a little longer. But will show great results and growth and safety for everyone. I will be using a little bit of history to fix some issues and the opposite of history that was done to undo to fix other issues. This is why I know it will work. Many other candidates in regarding the homeless issues won’t work at all and only cost the taxpayers money with no results; I have done a study and I can explain why it won’t work and the idea that I have will and will show results in both eliminating the bad eyesore as well as very little to no more homeless, a large percent of homeless will be reformed. As I said I have a plan like no other.
I thank you so much for your time please VOTE for me Ronald A. Anderson, You will be getting the best results and action being taken quickly of the issues concerned.”
