Nadine Dorries: Tradition secretary confuses rugby codes in speech at Rugby League World Cup occasion

Nadine Dorries is the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport

Culture secretary Nadine Dorries confused the two rugby codes in a speech at a Rugby League World Cup event in St Helens on Thursday.

Dorries thought Jonny Wilkinson’s 2003 winning drop-goal for England against Australia in rugby union’s World Cup final took place in rugby league.

“I’ve always quite liked the idea of rugby league,” Dorries said in her speech.

“My long-standing memory is that 2003 drop-goal.”

She added: “We were drinking Bloody Marys at the time. Wow, what a moment that was.”

She later addressed her mistake on Twitter.

“Like Jason Robinson I may have switched codes in my speech,” she wrote. external-link

“Both league and union have a rich heritage in the UK. Obviously I’ve followed rugby league much less in my lifetime, but I’m looking forward to watching England (and all the home nations) in the RL World Cup this autumn.”

OfReg guidelines in C3 entry row with Stream

(CNS): A long-running dispute between local broadband service providers Flow and C3 has been resolved following arbitration proceedings mediated by OfReg, the utilities regulator said in a press release. In a complex row lasting well over three years, C3 had complained about problems relating to infrastructure-sharing with Flow, which it claimed was breaching its licence requirements to provide access.

The regulator has largely found in C3’s favour, especially in relation to the rates Flow was charging, and C3 should now be able to provide a better service to its customers. However, it also sided with Flow on a number of technical aspects.

OfReg said it had conducted an extensive investigation and consultation process with both companies to establish the facts of the dispute, which ranged from slow or uncompleted work, appropriate pricing, technical issues on sub-duct sizes and access to install equipment at the MAYA-1 cable landing station.

It has now made a…

England v South Africa: Heather Knight says ready 12 months for subsequent Take a look at is ‘a bit unhappy’

England captain Heather Knight says it is “a bit sad” they have to wait another year for their next Test match following the draw with South Africa.

Knight’s side have played three Tests over the past year but their next Test is not scheduled to be until the home Ashes series of 2023.

Rain wiped out most of the fourth and final day of the one-off Test against South Africa at Taunton.

“It is a format we love playing,” Knight told BBC Sport.

“Given the opportunity, players can play the format – the evening session on day three epitomised how fun it can be and how much passion and skill there has been on show.

“We will miss playing it in the next year and hopefully there are a few more Tests on the horizon and we can keep pushing to keep the format alive.”

Earlier this month, International Cricket Council chair Greg Barclay said women’s Tests should be played over five days but that the format is “unlikely to be part of the landscape” in the future.

England head coach Lisa Keightley called…

Police apologise to Brac boaters over rescue report

Scene from one of the boats that answered the distress call (from social media)

(CNS): Following an outpouring of reports from the Cayman Brac boating community to the local media that the recent press release from the RCIPS recounting the rescue of two men from Pickle Bank at the weekend was inaccurate, the police have apologised for the confusion and thanked the members of the Brac community for their efforts in the rescue.

The police PR unit explained Wednesday that they had initially been informed that the Cayman Islands Coast Guard (CICG) had escorted the distressed boat but had since learned this was not the case.

The coastguard had been dispatched but by the time their boat reached the Brac, the vessel in distress had already arrived back to shore. The RCIPS explained that the CICG response was delayed because when the call came in it was assisting another vessel in distress and the coastguard vessel had a mechanical issue that the crew rectified on the way to…

Venue: All England Club Dates: 27 June-10 July
Coverage: Live across BBC TV, radio and online with extensive coverage on BBC iPlayer, Red Button, Connected TVs and mobile app.

British wildcard Katie Boulter delighted Wimbledon’s Centre Court with a stunning fightback to beat 2021 runner-up Karolina Pliskova.

After a 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 win, Boulter fought back tears when revealing her gran Jill died two days ago.

“I’m going to get so emotional. I’d like to dedicate it to her,” she said after securing her best Grand Slam run.

Fellow Britons Liam Broady and Heather Watson also earned memorable wins on Thursday to reach the third round.

Wildcard Broady, 28, won 6-2 4-6 0-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 against Argentine 12th seed Diego Schwartzman to also record his best performance at a major.

British number four Watson, 30, matched her best Wimbledon singles performance with a 7-5 6-4 win against China’s Wang Qiang.

England v South Africa: Check drawn after rain ruins ultimate day

England 417-8 dec (Sciver 169*, Davidson-Richards 107)
Match drawn; multi-format series level at 2-2
Scorecard

England’s push for victory over South Africa was ruined by rain on the fourth and final day as the one-off Test at Taunton ended in a draw.

Two heavy showers meant only 43 overs of play were possible, leaving South Africa 181-5, 48 ahead and with England denied the opportunity of a run chase.

England had managed to remove Sune Luus and Lizelle Lee, but were frustrated by nightwatcher Tumi Sekhukhune, who faced 134 balls for her 33 not out.

Marizanne Kapp added an unbeaten 43 to the 150 she scored in South Africa’s first innings.

Each team takes two points in the multi-format series, which now moves on to three one-day internationals, starting at Northampton on 11 July.

The result also means England remain without a Test victory since winning in Australia in 2014, while their last success at home was 17 years…

Dan Christian: T20 Blast-winning captain to depart Notts Outlaws

Dan Christian is Notts’ only T20 title-winning captain

Notts Outlaws captain Dan Christian has confirmed that he will leave the side at the end of their T20 Blast campaign.

It means Friday’s visit of Durham to Trent Bridge will be the Australian’s final home match for the Outlaws.

He captained them to T20 titles in 2017 and 2020 – and got their fastest-ever T20 century, off 37 balls against Northamptonshire Steelbacks, in 2018.

The all-rounder, 39, has made 86 T20 appearances for Notts, scoring 1,715 runs and taking 48 wickets.

He is one of only six players to have scored 5,000 runs and taken 250 wickets in T20 cricket.

“I’ve always been motivated more by winning trophies than by personal milestones, so the success we’ve had here over the years has been so rewarding,” he said.

“It might sound cliched, but the main thing I’ll remember my time here for is the lifelong friendships I’ve made in the dressing room. It’s those bonds that make the victories all the more special.

Feral cat situation settled, management challenge restarts

A feral cat preys upon a hatchling rock iguana in Little Cayman

(CNS): Feral cat control has resumed in Little Cayman after an agreement between the Cayman Islands Government and two local animal welfare non-profit organisations, Feline Friends and the Cayman Islands Humane Society, which had challenged the programme in the courts. The NPOs managed to stop the control project for several years, placing threatened native and endemic fauna in even greater danger as the wild cats were slaughtering birds and iguanas, bringing some to the brink of extinction.

The dispute lasted for more than three years but the NPOs agreed to quit the fight earlier this year after the Cayman Islands Government agreed to pick up their legal tab of CI$25,000. Cabinet recently approved the settlement to ensure that invasive species management in the Sister Islands could resume in earnest.

Chief Officer Jennifer Ahearn said the Ministry of Sustainability respected the important work local…

Scorecard

Debutant Issy Wong took two late wickets to aid England’s push for victory over South Africa on day three of the one-off Test at Taunton.

A three-hour rain delay looked to have ended the day’s action, only for Wong to strike twice when the players returned for 12.5 overs from 18:30 BST.

Lara Goodall tickled down the leg side and Laura Wolvaardt was caught at gully to leave the Proteas 55-3, 78 behind.

England had earlier pushed their first innings to 417-8 declared, the fourth-highest total they have made in a women’s Test.

Nat Sciver ended unbeaten on 169 not out, also fourth on the all-time list of individual scores by an England woman in Tests.

Leading by 133, England removed South Africa opener Andrie Steyn, before two lengthy rain breaks allowed only eight overs in nearly six hours.

Lufthansa is bringing again the A380

(CNN) — The A380 superjumbo is beloved among aviation fans, thanks to its spacious interior, mighty size and quiet inflight experience, but its days have been numbered since Airbus announced in 2019 it was ceasing production of the airliner.

Costly to run, the world’s largest passenger aircraft’s demise was apparently accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic travel slump, but now German airline Lufthansa — which had been selling off its grounded A380s and was understood to be retiring the aircraft from its fleet — has announced plans to redeploy the huge plane from summer 2023.

In a statement released on Monday, Lufthansa said the aircraft was returning “in response to the steep rise in customer demand and the delayed delivery of ordered aircraft,” noting the A380 remains popular with its crew, as well as passengers.

Coke takes inspiration from McDonald’s for its newest taste

The latest product out of Coca-Cola Creations — Coke’s innovation platform, which brought us starlight and pixel-flavored sodas — is a collaboration with Marshmello, a masked DJ and electronic music producer.

If you think the artist worked with Coke to develop a marshmallow-flavored beverage, you’re wrong. Instead, the new flavor has notes of strawberry and watermelon, Marshmello’s favorites.

“For our third Coca-Cola Creations drop, we sought to add an unexpected remix of flavors to a great Coca-Cola taste,” said Oana Vlad, senior director of global strategy at the company, in a statement announcing the collaboration Wednesday.

“We created a vibey blend of my favorite flavors in this all-new mix,” Marshmello said in a statement. “I think it tastes amazing and I hope fans love it too.”

The new flavor, which also comes in a zero-sugar variety, will be available for purchase starting on July 11 in the United States for a limited time. It will be offered in other countries later…

How Erdogan’s Turkey grew to become NATO’s wild card

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said that Ankara had agreed to support the membership bids of his country and Sweden, removing a major hurdle to the two joining the alliance.

Turkey has become a headache for NATO. But recent geopolitical events have shown that it’s one the alliance will have to tolerate. Experts say Erdogan knows that well and has used his country’s place in the grouping to serve its national interests.

In a European war that has essentially become a conflict between the Kremlin and NATO, Turkey has positioned itself as a neutral party, opting not to join its allies in sanctioning Russia while offering to mediate between the warring parties. It has supported Ukraine in the war but has been careful not to antagonize Moscow.

Experts say Turkey is today more valuable than ever to NATO. The country sits at the south-eastern flank of the alliance, a key buffer between Russia and the West. It maintains the second-largest army in the alliance after the US, and borders a…

Colombian jail riot sparks fireplace, killing 51 individuals

The fire broke out amid a chaotic scene inside the penitentiary in the western Colombian city of Tolua.

At about 2 a.m. local time, a fight broke out among prisoners, according to Colombian Justice Minister Wilson Ruiz. One inmate set a mattress ablaze during the brawl, and flames spread across the prison wing, Ruiz said at a news conference Tuesday.

“The penitentiary personnel tried to take care of it themselves, but the flames were too strong and we had to wait for the arrival of the firefighters to control the situation,” Ruiz said.

Twenty-four people were injured, including an unspecified number of guards.

Relatives of inmates at the Tulua prison in Colombia wait outside the facility after the deadly incident on Tuesday.

The prison is a middle-security penitentiary where inmates serve either minor sentences or finish the last few months of their incarceration, Ruiz said.

Colombian prisons are notoriously overcrowded. On average, most are 20% over capacity, Ruiz said. The penitentiary where the fire broke out in Tolua, however, was 17% over capacity, making it one of the country’s least…

Japan tells tens of millions to save lots of electrical energy as document warmth wave strains energy provide

The government urged citizens in the capital to turn off lights and power switches for three hours in the afternoon and to use air conditioning “appropriately,” as the country struggles with growing power shortages.

The request comes despite experts warning that record-setting temperatures could continue for weeks.

“Please save as much power as possible, such as by turning off lights that are not in use,” the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said Monday. It said appropriate uses of air conditioning included to “prevent heatstroke.”

Japan’s power supply has been tight since March, when an earthquake in the northeast forced some nuclear power plants to suspend operations. At the same time demand is at its highest since 2011, when Japan was hit by the strongest earthquake in its recorded history. The ministry warned the mismatch between supply and demand is becoming “severe.”
But with recent temperatures soaring to dangerous levels, rationing electricity will not be easy.

Centuries from Nat Sciver and debutant Alice Davidson-Richards took England from trouble to a position of strength on the second day of the one-off Test against South Africa.

Sciver ended the day on 119 not out, while Davidson-Richards’ 107 made her the first England woman to register a Test ton on debut since 1986.

Brittney Griner: Russian courtroom schedules begin of trial for Friday, her lawyer says

Griner — who has been held in Russia since her arrest at a Moscow airport on allegations of attempted drug smuggling — attended the preliminary hearing in person Monday, arriving at court handcuffed and flanked by guards in black vests, according to a photo by AFP photographer Kirill Kudryavstev.

Her lawyer, Alexander Boykov, previously told CNN the hearing would occur behind closed doors at the Khimki court, just outside Moscow.

Griner, 31, a Phoenix Mercury player who plays in Russia during the WNBA’s offseason, was arrested February 17. Russian authorities claimed she had cannabis oil in her luggage and accused her of smuggling significant amounts of a narcotic substance, an offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

WNBA star Brittney Griner arrives at a hearing at the Khimki court outside Moscow on Monday.

West pushes Russia into its first international debt default since 1918

New York/London
CNN Business
 —

Russia has defaulted on its foreign debt for the first time since the Bolshevik revolution more than a century ago.

Following reports that Moscow had failed to pay about $100 million in interest on two bonds during a 30-day grace period that expired Sunday, the White House said the default showed the power of Western sanctions imposed on Russia since it invaded Ukraine.

“This morning’s news around the finding of Russia’s default, for the first time in more than a century, situates just how strong the reactions are that the US, along with allies and partners, have taken, as well as how dramatic the impact has been on Russia’s economy,” a senior administration official said on the sidelines of a G7 summit in Germany.

Shares week forward: Digital Arts nonetheless the odd one out in gaming

Xbox owner Microsoft (MSFT) is in the process of buying Activision Blizzard (ATVI). Grand Theft Auto maker Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) has already scooped up mobile game developer Zynga.
Will EA be able to remain independent as its peers continue to grow? There’s also growing competition from the likes of metaverse mobile gaming company Roblox and Fortnite maker Epic. Even Netflix (NFLX) has thrown its hat into the gaming arena.
EA has a lot of lucrative franchises, such as the long-running Madden NFL games, a popular soccer series (that will soon lose the FIFA branding), Apex Legends and several games tied to the Star Wars universe.
And there has been a lot of chatter about EA being a good takeover target for deep-pocketed tech and media firms such as Apple (AAPL), Disney (DIS), Comcast (CMCSA), or Amazon (AMZN).
Grand Theft Auto, meet FarmVille

So will EA finally get bought? The company was not immediately available for comment.

But EA has been acquisitive in its own right and could be looking for further deals,…

All of the recession warnings this week

New York
CNN
 —

It’s the question everyone is asking: Are we about to enter a recession?

A tepid stock market, soaring inflation, and rising interest rates have left Americans less than optimistic about the state of the economy. Consumer sentiment has plunged to a record low, according to a University of Michigan survey released last week, fueled by frustration over high prices.

Earlier in June, the consumer price index jumped to its highest level in 40 years. The government’s primary inflation gauge saw prices surging 8.6% for the past 12 months. And now the Fed is raising interest rates at an aggressive pace as it looks to slow down economic activity.

To be clear: we are not in a recession, at least not yet. But signs of an economic downturn are cropping up all over, in sectors from commodities to housing . Here’s what CNN Business reported last week:

Chinese language censors scrub web after senior get together official provides speech on timeline of zero-Covid in Beijing

Beijing Daily, the official Communist Party newspaper for the Chinese capital, earlier reported that the city’s party chief, Cai Qi, said Monday that “for the next five years, Beijing will resolutely implement Covid-19 pandemic control measures and uphold the ‘zero-Covid’ policy to prevent imported cases from coming in and domestic cases from rebounding.”

The reported reference by Cai, who is a close ally of Chinese President Xi Jinping, to “the next five years” sparked a huge backlash on Chinese social media. In response, Beijing Daily removed the line, describing it as an “editing error” while leaving his other remarks about pandemic controls intact.

CNN reviewed the entire speech and while the published quote from Beijing Daily was misleading, Cai did discuss at length the possibility of keeping zero-Covid policies in place in the capital over the next five-year period.

The pandemic controls that would stay in place include routine PCR tests, strict entry rules, regular health…

England were defied by a superb century from South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp on the first day of the one-off Test at Taunton.

Jersey boosted their hopes of making the 2023 Cricket World Cup after thrashing Bermuda by 291 runs to win all five of the ICC Challenge League B matches in Uganda.

Openers Nick Greenwood (106) and Harrison Carlyon (73) again excelled as they put on 168 for the first wicket.

England v New Zealand: Late wickets put hosts in cost at Headingley

Third LV Insurance Test, Headingley (day three of five)
New Zealand 329 (Mitchell 109, Leach 5-100) & 168-5 (Latham 76)
England 360 (Bairstow 162, Overton 97, Boult 4-104)
New Zealand lead by 137 runs
Scorecard

Late wickets helped England surge into the ascendancy on day three of the third Test against New Zealand at Headingley.

After Jonny Bairstow’s 162 helped the hosts gain an unlikely first-innings lead of 31, New Zealand calmly reached 125-1 to quieten a crowd roused by more England exuberance with the bat.

Jamie Overton had Tom Latham caught behind for 76 with the first ball after tea and, immediately after another break – this time for rain – Devon Conway was taken one-handed by Ollie Pope at short leg off Joe Root.

Matthew Potts then claimed the crucial wicket of Kane Williamson, the captain nicking off for 48, and Jack Leach had Henry Nicholls…
