An unbeaten century from Mark Chapman steered New Zealand to a seven-wicket ODI victory over Scotland in Edinburgh.

But Chapman, who finished on 101, and Daryl Mitchell, not out on 74, then shared a partnership of 175 to take the game away from the hosts.

Having fallen to two bruising Twenty20 defeats at the same venue last week, Scotland recovered some pride in their first ODI against full-member opposition since 2019.

Kyle Coetzer (22) and Michael Jones (36) put on 46 for the first wicket although the hosts…

Invoice Russell: NBA leads tributes after Boston Celtics nice dies on the age of 88

Bill Russell received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama in 2011

American basketball great Bill Russell has died at the age of 88.

As a player, centre Russell won a record 11 NBA titles and five NBA Most Valuable Player awards during a 13-year career with the Boston Celtics.

He captained America to Olympic gold in 1956 and he transcended the court by becoming the league’s first black head coach and an equal rights pioneer.

“Bill Russell was the greatest champion in all of team sports,” said NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

“The countless accolades he earned for his storied career with the Boston Celtics only begin to tell the story of Bill’s immense impact on our league and broader society.

“At the height of his athletic career, Bill advocated vigorously for civil rights and social justice – a legacy he passed down to generations of NBA players who followed in his footsteps.

“I often called him basketball’s Babe Ruth for how he transcended time. Bill was the ultimate winner…

Ukraine battle: movies allegedly present Russian troopers castrating a Ukrainian soldier

The three videos appear to show a soldier wearing what look like yellow and blue patches — the colors of the Ukrainian flag — on the ground, with his hands tied behind his back, first being gagged, then mutilated, then shot.

CNN cannot independently verify the authenticity of the videos which circulated widely on social media after first appearing on a pro-Russian Telegram channel. CNN also has not independently verified the nationality of the perpetrators or the victim.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine said it is appalled by the videos. In a statement issued late Friday, the Monitoring Mission said the “torture and summary executions of prisoners of war and persons hors de combat are war crimes.”

The Prosecutor General’s office in Ukraine said it has launched a criminal investigation into the matter, “based on the results of the video processing, which shows how persons in the uniform of servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are torturing a…

England v South Africa: Shamsi takes 5-24 as hosts thumped by 90 runs to lose T20 sequence

Third Vitality Twenty20 International, Ageas Bowl
South Africa 191-5 (20 overs) Hendricks 70 (50), Markram 51* (36); Willey 3-25
England 101 (16.4 overs) Bairstow 27 (30); Shamsi 5-24
South Africa won by 90 runs; win series 2-1
Scorecard

A dismal batting display saw a pitiful England suffer a heavy 90-run defeat in the deciding Twenty20 against South Africa to lose the series 2-1.

Chasing 192 to win, they were blunt with the bat, going 55 balls without hitting a boundary at one stage, before being dismissed for 101 in 16.4 overs.

It is the fourth time in six T20s this summer that England have been bowled out and there was another failure for Jason Roy, who made 17 off 18 balls.

Jonny Bairstow top-scored with 27, while South Africa’s left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi ripped through England with career-best figures of 5-24.

Defeat means England have lost a third successive T20 series, after defeats by West Indies and India this year, for the first time and they have failed to win a…

Prince Charles disputes report he brokered £1 million donation from Bin Ladens for his charity

CNN
 —

Clarence House, the residence of Prince Charles, has disputed claims reported in the UK’s Sunday Times that the heir to the throne brokered a deal in 2013 to accept a £1 million charity donation from Osama bin Laden’s half-brothers.

The Sunday Times, citing unnamed sources, reported that Prince Charles accepted the donation from Bakr bin Laden and Shafiq bin Laden for The Prince of Wales’ Charitable Fund (PWCF) despite objections from key advisers at the time.

Clarence House disputed that assertion on Saturday, saying the decision to accept the money was made by the charity’s Trustees, and not Prince Charles.

“The Prince of Wales’ Charitable Fund has assured us that thorough due diligence was undertaken in accepting this donation,” the Clarence House statement said. “The decision to accept was taken by the charity’s Trustees alone and any…

Amazon beats expectations to keep away from tech earnings stoop

The e-commerce giant on Thursday reported net sales of $121.2 billion for the quarter ended June 30, a 7% increase from the same quarter last year and higher than the $119 billion forecast by analysts surveyed by Refinitiv.

Amazon (AMZN) stock surged more than 11% in after-hours trading following the results, shrugging off the company’s $2 billion loss that it attributed in part to its investment in electric truck manufacturer Rivian. Amazon posted a bigger loss last quarter that it similarly attributed to the Rivian investment.

“Despite continued inflationary pressures in fuel, energy, and transportation costs, we’re making progress on the more controllable costs we referenced last quarter, particularly improving the productivity of our fulfillment network,” Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in a statement.

Amazon’s performance was buoyed by its cloud business, Amazon Web Services, which posted a profit of $5.7 billion on revenues of nearly $20 billion — a 33% increase from the same…

(CNN) — When dozens of towns across Italy started selling crumbling buildings for the cost of an espresso, people from all over the world were prompted to grab a slice of the action — and for many different reasons.

It’s not always about chasing the idyllic dream of living La Dolce Vita in a rural, sleepy village where time stands still.

For some, it’s part of a career change: a radical professional upgrade that comes with a more laid-back lifestyle.

The sale of one-euro ($1) and cheap buildings in the Sicilian town of Mussomeli is luring Argentinian doctors with Italian roots, who plan to settle in and give a new twist to their lives.

Why film theaters present so few movies now

After “Bullet Train,” Sony’s action flick starring Brad Pitt, hits theaters next week, the movie slate for August, September and October becomes desolate. It’s hard to find any blockbusters in the mix. In fact, there aren’t many films that could open beyond $50 million at the box office until Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which doesn’t debut until November 11.
The dearth of films comes in a year that’s already well behind pre-pandemic output from Hollywood. At this point in 2019, there were 63 nationwide releases in North America, according to Comscore (SCOR). This year the number is 39 — a 38% drop from three years ago.
Despite the lag, 2022 has mostly held its own. Ticket sales are roughly 30% behind pre-pandemic levels in 2019, which is pretty good considering the lack of movies hitting theaters.

So where are all the movies? There’s still a lot being produced and released, but many are either headed directly to streaming or being delayed because the industry is…

Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan has unfinished enterprise in Syria

Pledged almost two months ago yet awaiting what analysts say is probably a green light from Moscow, the operation raises questions about Turkey’s ultimate plans for Syria.

Erdogan says he wants to initiate his fourth operation in the country’s north since 2016, targeting a zone which includes the two key towns of Manbij and Tel Rifaat. The goal, according to the President, is to rid the area of fighters allied to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a militant group that Turkey deems terrorist.

After a trilateral meeting between Erdogan, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in Tehran yielded no evident developments last week, it seems that Turkey is still in talks with Moscow, hoping for Putin’s blessing to put more boots on the ground.

The Kremlin has thus far opposed the operation, saying it would not contribute to Syria’s stability and security.
Turkey's assault in Syria is a boon for Erdogan. Here's why

Another attempt is expected next month in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi, where the Russian…

Commonwealth Video games: Youthful England sweep previous Sri Lanka in T20 opener

Alice Capsey, just 17, underlined her potential with an innings of 44
Commonwealth Games Group A, Edgbaston:
England 109-5 (17.1 overs) beat Sri Lanka 106-9 (20 overs) by five wickets – scorecard

England swatted aside Sri Lanka as they overhauled a meagre total with 17 balls to spare in their opening Twenty20 match of the Commonwealth Games.

Spinner Sophie Ecclestone justified her ranking as the best T20 bowler in the world with three wickets to sap Sri Lanka of momentum.

The visitors washed up on 106-9 and England’s pursuit was swift and sure.

Teenager Alice Capsey’s 44 off 45 balls helped reel in the target as England won by five wickets.

It was an assured opening to the tournament for an England side who were without the leadership of usual captain Heather Knight, who missed the match with a lingering hip injury.

The inclusion of 17-year-olds Capsey and Freya Kemp, together with Knight’s absence, emphasised the youth of coach Lisa Keightley’s selection.

Matthew Milnes came through at home county Nottinghamshire before joining Kent

Yorkshire have signed Kent seamer Matt Milnes on a three-year deal for the 2023 County Championship season.

The 28-year-old will join up with Ottis Gibson’s White Rose squad in November, once his current Kent deal expires.

Milnes started out with Nottinghamshire before moving south in 2019. He has taken 140 first-class wickets, 126 of them for Kent, for whom he has also had 56 scalps in white-ball cricket.

“This feels like the right time to embrace a new challenge,” Milnes said.

“I am excited by the prospect of joining Yorkshire and working with Ottis and his coaching staff. Hopefully, this will help me improve and push on to higher levels.”

Yorkshire interim managing director of cricket Darren Gough added: “He’s a very skilful fast bowler who will add some great competition to the group of seamers we have here.”

Yorkshire announced on Thursday that veteran paceman Steve Patterson, the Tykes captain since…

Joey Evison: Kent signal Notts all-rounder on One-Day Cup mortgage and on three-year deal from 2023

Joey Evison has made 401 runs and taken 21 wickets in his 10 red-ball appearances for Notts

Kent have signed Nottinghamshire’s Joey Evison, initially on loan, after he turned down the offer of a new three-year contract at Trent Bridge.

The 20-year-old former England Under-19s all-rounder will play on loan for Kent in the One-Day Cup, which starts next week.

He will then complete his move to Canterbury on a three year-deal for the 2023 season.

“I couldn’t be more excited about joining Kent,” said Evison. external-link

“I recognise that I’m still young but I’m hungry for first team cricket.”

Evison took his first five-wicket haul in only his fourth first-class appearance against Durham at the Riverside last July and made his maiden century in this season’s opening game against Sussex at Hove.

Sargassum removing trial deliberate in North Sound

North Sound sargassum influx (photo provided by the DoE)

(CNS): There is no easy way of addressing the major influx of sargassum into the North Sound, Premier Wayne Panton said Thursday. Nevertheless, resources have been mobilised for a trial to pump out the invasive seaweed and reduce the impact it is having on the marine life and businesses operating in and around the area.

While this is not the first time that Grand Cayman has had to deal with sargassum, it is the first time that it has become trapped in the sound, so a different approach to the clean-up is needed, as the thick bed of seaweed is stuck in the water, among the mangroves and on the ironshore, Panton said

Government has signed a contract with a local private company and work started Friday at Garvin Park in West Bay, which is closed for the next few days, and will continue throughout the weekend. The aim is to pump as much of the sargassum out of the sea as possible, pushing the seawater that comes…

Nestlé has saved mountain climbing costs this yr

London
CNN Business
 —

Nestlé hiked its prices by 6.5% in the first half of 2022 as it grapples with an “unprecedented” rise in costs.

The world’s largest food company raised its prices the most in North America — a 9.8% increase — followed by Latin America at 9.4%, Nestlé said in a statement Thursday.

Rising costs for commodities, packaging, freight and energy weighed on the company’s operating profit margin, Nestlé

(NSRGF) said.

“We limited the impact of unprecedented inflationary pressures and supply chain constraints on our margin development through disciplined cost control and operational efficiencies,” CEO Mark Schneider said in a statement.

Despite higher prices, the company, which counts KitKat and Nescafé among its brands, grew its organic sales 8.1% over the period — driven by strong demand for its…

Biden speaks with China’s Xi as pressure grows over Taiwan

The matter was discussed at length in the two-hour-and-17-minute phone call Thursday. Xi offered an ominous warning to Biden, according to China’s version of events.

“Public opinion shall not be violated, and if you play with fire you get burned. I hope the US side can see this clearly,” he told Biden, according to China’s state news agency.

The White House’s account of the call was less specific.

“On Taiwan, President Biden underscored that the United States policy has not changed and that the United States strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status quo or undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” a US readout read.

The phone call was Biden and Xi’s fifth conversation since February 2021. Ahead of time, US officials said a range of topics — from the tensions surrounding Taiwan to economic competition to the war in Ukraine — were likely to arise.

But hopes for substantially improving ties with Beijing were low. Instead, Biden’s aides hope maintaining a…

Eiffel Tower Quick Details | CNN

CNN
 —

Here’s some background information about the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Almost seven million people visit the Eiffel Tower annually.

About 300 million visitors have been to the tower since its opening.

Designer Gustave Eiffel had a small apartment cloistered away in the upper reaches of the tower. In 2016, a second (temporary) apartment was built inside the tower by vacation rental company, HomeAway. The firm held a contest, selecting four winners to spend one night each in the apartment, with up to five guests.

The names of 72 French scientists are listed on the four sides of the tower.

The premises are under video surveillance.

Security checks are performed prior to entry and visitors are required to disclose the contents of their bags.

There is a police station located at the foot of the south pillar.

Earlier, Nottinghamshire pace bowlers James Pattinson and Dane Paterson finished with five wickets each as Sussex, who sit next to bottom of the table, were bowled out for 143 in reply to Nottinghamshire’s first…

Chris Woakes: England bowler to have knee surgical procedure in bid to make T20 World Cup

Woakes has played 45 Tests, 106 one-day internationals and 16 T20s for England

England bowler Chris Woakes will have a knee operation this week in a bid to be fit for the T20 World Cup in October.

Woakes, 33, has not played a first-team county or international match since England’s defeat by West Indies in Grenada in March because of injury.

The Warwickshire player said he will be out for between four and six weeks if nothing “too serious” emerges during surgery.

“It’s been a frustrating summer,” Woakes told BBC Sport.

“You never really want to be missing cricket, especially in the summer in England.

“But, in a way, I’m happy I’ve decided to have the surgery and try and get whatever’s wrong right, and get back as soon as possible.

“If they go in and expect nothing to be too serious it should be four to six weeks. So fingers crossed I will be back to competitive cricket soon,”

Woakes, who has also been struggling with an ankle injury, returned to competitive action in a Warwickshire second…

Instagram has a Kardashian drawback

New York
CNN Business
 —

Tati Bruening was once the textbook example of an Instagram user. Since the pandemic, she has been building her career as a photographer on the platform and attracted hundreds of thousands of followers in the process. But recently, her relationship with Instagram started to change.

On Monday, Bruening shared a post on the platform calling to “Make Instagram Instagram again.” She told CNN Business that she was scrolling the app and felt frustrated by the lack of content she was seeing from accounts she followed in the wake of recent updates prioritizing recommended posts and videos from its Reels product.

“I was seeing a post from my friend underneath three Reels and a recommended post that was six days old,” she said. As she put it in her post: “Stop trying to be TikTok I just want to see cute photos of my friends.”

Her post blew…

Teva reaches proposed $4.35 billion settlement of US opioid lawsuits

The proposal calls for Teva to pay up to $3.7 billion in cash over 13 years and provide a company estimated $1.2 billion worth of the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone.

US states, cities and counties filed more than 3,000 lawsuits against opioid manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies, accusing them of downplaying their addiction risk and failing to stop pills from being diverted for illegal use.

Teva has denied wrongdoing, saying it sold legal medication that was approved for treatment of pain.

Teva’s proposed settlement would allow state and local governments to opt for additional cash in lieu of an allotment of the overdose medication, at a value of 20% of the drug’s list price. The cash value of the settlement could reach $4.25 billion if state and local governments opt to receive money in lieu of the drugs.

Israel-based Teva also will pay about $100 million to Native American tribes and pay attorneys fees incurred by the states, local governments and tribes.

The…

Lancashire’s County Championship title hopes took a dent after a frenetic day at Old Trafford in which 16 wickets fell.

Kent soon fell to 12-3 in reply, but valuable half centuries from Joe Denly (59) and Jack Leaning (90) took them into the lead.

Kent had lost captain and wicketkeeper Sam Billings to Covid before play with replacement Ollie Robinson travelling up on a train to take his place, but under muggy grey skies, Henry ripped through the Lancashire middle and…
