Queen Elizabeth will not return to London to nominate new British Prime Minister, for first time in her reign

Queen Elizabeth II’s 14 prime ministers

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II poses in 2010 with several of the prime ministers who have served during her reign. With the Queen, from left, are David Cameron, John Major, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

Queen Elizabeth II’s 14 prime ministers

Winston Churchill (1951-1955): The Queen was said to be in awe of her first prime minister, Winston Churchill. Once when asked which PM she enjoyed meeting with most, she replied: “Winston of course, because it’s always such fun.”

Queen Elizabeth II’s 14 prime ministers

Anthony Eden (1955-1957): Her Majesty found her second prime minister to be a sympathetic listener and their relationship was one of constitutional propriety. The largest political event to occur during Eden’s time was the Suez crisis. During this time, he believed it was of supreme importance to keep the Queen informed, so he shared all of the Suez papers with her — the first time she had ever been shown secret government documents.

UN says related numbers of refugees are fleeing Venezuela as warfare torn Ukraine

The refugee crisis in Venezuela is striking because there is not a war in the country like Ukraine, where ongoing conflict has pushed people out of the country.

“The United Nations confirmed that the number of displaced Venezuelans has reached 6.8 million people—tying with Ukraine for the largest refugee and migrant crisis worldwide, and surpassing Syria for the first time ever,” said Refugees International Senior Advocate for Latin America Rachel Schmidtke in a statement.

But “although the number of Venezuelans and Ukrainians forced from their homes is now roughly the same, the international response is not,” Schmidtke added.

“This year, donors have only funded 13 percent of the humanitarian response plan for Venezuelans—while the Ukraine response plan has received almost five times the amount of support,” she said.

Deteriorating economic conditions, food shortages and limited access to health care are increasingly pushing Venezuelans to leave, and a growing Venezuelan community…

Gorbachev’s ethical authority did little to cease Putin

“He led our country during a period of complex, dramatic changes, large-scale foreign policy, and economic and social challenges,” the statement read. “He deeply understood that reforms were necessary, he strove to offer his own solutions to urgent problems.”

A sense of protocol may have kept the Kremlin leader from telling us what he really thinks about the man who presided over the collapse of the Soviet Union, something Putin once called the “greatest geopolitical catastrophe” of the twentieth century. For a more unvarnished opinion, we can rely on Margarita Simonyan, the bellicose editor-in-chief of state propaganda outlet RT (formerly Russia Today).

“Gorbachev is dead,” Simonyan wrote on Twitter. “Time to gather up what’s been scattered.”

Simonyan seems to be channeling her President, who has embarked on a campaign of imperial restoration with the invasion of Ukraine. And it’s tempting to look at the two leaders through a simple narrative arc: Gorbachev allowed the 15 republics…

It now prices greater than $300,000 to boost a toddler, due to inflation

It now costs $310,605 for a married middle-income couple with two children to raise their youngest child from birth through high school, according to a recent estimate from the Brookings Institution.

The estimate builds on a 2017 report from the US Department of Agriculture. Back then, the agency estimated that it cost a middle-income, married couple $233,610 to raise a child to the age of 17. The price factored in expenses for food, shelter and other necessities for a child born in 2015, but notably not the cost of a college education.

Brookings found that today’s record-high inflation has dramatically increased those costs. Brookings first shared the numbers with the Wall Street Journal.

“It causes people to recognize that when you start having a family or when you increase the size of your family, you’re going to have to make some tradeoffs with other items in your budget,” said Isabel Sawhill, a senior fellow in economic studies at Brookings Institution who authored the study…

One-Day Cup: Dane Vilas hits century as Lancashire beat Sussex in semi-final

Dane Vilas hit eight fours and six sixes in his innings of 121
Royal London One-Day Cup semi-final, 1st central County Ground, Hove
Lancashire 319-8 (50 overs): Vilas 121; Hudson-Prentice 3-43
Sussex 254 (46.3 overs): Orr 71; Hurt 3-43
Lancashire beat Sussex by 65 runs
Match scorecard

Lancashire recovered superbly with the bat to beat Sussex by 65 runs and set up a One-Day Cup final against Kent.

The visitors slumped to 67-5 at Hove before Dane Vilas’ marvellous 121 and half-centuries from George Lavelle and Danny Lamb helped them post 319-8.

Sussex were well placed at 126-1, but when in-form opener Ali Orr was out for 71 they could not keep up with the run-rate and stumbled to 254 all out.

The final takes place at Trent Bridge on Saturday, 17 September.

Lancashire’s chances of posting a competitive total looked remote when seamer Fynn Hudson-Prentice (3-43) removed George Balderson to leave them five-down in the 15th over.

Vilas and Lavelle began the recovery with a sixth-wicket stand of 132,…

With shares falling once more, this is how one can defend your portfolio

This is an updated version of a story that originally ran on July 21, 2022.

But then Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell spoke at the annual Jackson Hole Economic Symposium last week and strongly indicated that the US central bank would likely raise rates more aggressively than investors expected, and he said that American households can expect “some pain” ahead.

And some analysts say stocks may have further to fall. “Be cautious at this point as it’s not entirely clear that the bottom is in for this cycle, let alone for 2022. There will be more volatility to come in the next few months, so caveat emptor,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Independent Advisor Alliance.

While it may be a bumpy road ahead, there are ways to mitigate potential damage to your portfolio in the coming months.

Forget timing the market

Bearish markets can be a bear on your psyche. There may be times when you are tempted to sell your equity investments and move the proceeds into cash or…

Darren Stevens produced another fairytale display to steer Kent past Hampshire by three wickets and into the final of the One-Day Cup.

Chasing 311 at the Ageas Bowl, Kent were seven down needing 64 from 48 balls but Stevens hauled his side home with 84 not out from 65 balls.

Ollie Robsinson led the pursuit with 95 and Harry Finch made 52 before Stevens struck 11 fours and three sixes.

Hampshire posted 310-9, Nick Gubbins top scoring with 75 from 84 balls.

It was looking good enough to keep Hampshire’s hopes alive for a clean sweep of trophies when Kent’s required rate touched eight-an-over with only three wickets in hand.

Footballer Paul Pogba’s claims of extortion and threats being investigated by French police

Pogba made the claim of extortion through his legal team in a statement obtained by CNN on Monday.

A spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office told CNN an investigation was launched earlier this month. “I can confirm that an investigation was opened on 3 August 2022, in particular on the charge of extortion in an organized gang and attempted extortion in an organized gang,” the statement reads.

“The investigations were entrusted to the OCLCO,” the prosecutor’s office continued. The OCLCO is the branch of the French judicial police in charge of investigations into organized crime.

Pogba’s statement came after his brother Mathias Pogba released a series of videos on Instagram in English, French, Spanish and Italian in which he claimed that he would make “great revelations” about the conduct of his brother and Rafaela Pimenta, his agent.

New charts map seabed and marine ecosystems

Lidar data of Grand Cayman covering both the marine and terrestrial environments

(CNS): The newly completed seabed mapping survey of the Cayman Islands by the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) will support marine navigation safety and provide an invaluable source of information to support the management, protection and understanding of the local marine environment, according to a release from the Ministry of District Administration and Lands.

The new charts uncover information about the depth and nature of the seabed and its ecosystems. The UK has also supplied remote monitors to measure local sea-level rise.

The data was officially presented to the Cayman Islands Government in June by UKHO Hydrographic Programme Manager Kerrie Howard, who said it covers both the land and sea for all three islands.

The Department of Lands and Survey is the custodian of the data but the information will also be useful to several other government departments, including the Department of…

The ‘world’s coolest’ streets for 2022

(CNN) — When it comes to fashion, street style has as much cachet as runway style — in fact, there are dozens of blogs and Instagram accounts dedicated to chronicling the best streetwear looks.

That’s because urban chic has always started in the street, where people from all kinds of classes and backgrounds can mingle with each other on the way to work, school, home and entertainment venues.

This year, Time Out — the media and hospitality brand that publishes local guides to some of the world’s most interesting cities — has released its second annual roundup of the world’s coolest streets.

More than a neighborhood, a single street can define a city’s culture.

“In most of the world, pre-pandemic life has returned with a bang. With people excitedly making plans and going out in their own cities and on city breaks again,” James Manning, travel editor for Time Out, said in a statement. “Our list of the Coolest Streets in the World takes in the key thoroughfares which clued-up locals…

Syrians in Turkey worry the worst as Erdogan adjustments tune on Assad

Syrian refugees have become central in the political debate in Turkey ahead of elections next year. Calls to repatriate them to war-torn Syria used to be the cause of fringe, right-wing parties, but now they’ve become mainstream as the country reels from an economic crisis.

“There isn’t a precondition for dialogue [with Syria],” Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in an interview last week. “What matters more is the aim and target of that dialogue,” he told Turkish broadcaster Haber Global.

His comments marked a dramatic shift from Ankara’s position over the past decade. Turkey has been one of the main backers of the Syrian opposition and armed factions that have fought to topple the Assad regime there, and it has intervened in the conflict militarily. The Turkish military maintains a presence across its border with Syria and in areas inside Syria it controls along with Syrian opposition forces.

Cavusoglu made his comments just days after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan…

Paul Pogba says he has been the target of extortion and threats from an organised gang.

The Juventus and France midfielder issued a statement through his lawyers on Sunday saying the matter had been reported to the authorities.

England v South Africa: Ollie Robinson says he has grow to be ‘fitness center freak’

Seamer Ollie Robinson says he has become “a gym freak” in order to regain his place in the England team.

Playing his first Test since January, he took five wickets in the innings win over South Africa at Old Trafford.

Robinson’s fitness was criticised during the Ashes and injuries have kept him out of international cricket for most of this year.

“I lifted more weights. I ran further. Everything I was doing before I just took to the extreme,” he said.

“I knew I could get back to this stage and I worked probably the hardest I’ve ever worked before.

“My mindset shifted from trying to be fit for fitness testing to trying to be fit for five days of Test cricket at a high level.

“I’ve become a bit of a gym freak, which I never thought I’d say. It’s become a bit of a habit, whereas before it was a chore.”

England v South Africa: Maturing England produce their greatest efficiency of summer time

If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.

Not too long ago, England were standing for ages in the field then seeing their wickets fall in a regular clatter.

The revolution under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum hasn’t just been about crashing the ball to all parts and dishing out chin music (although that is fun to watch).

It is not a uniform style of play, but a way of thinking. Players have been backed to the hilt, fear has been removed from failure and the experience of playing for England has been made as enjoyable as possible. The idea is that confidence will grow, resilience build and, just maybe, they will win some games of cricket.

After opening with four thrilling victories in a row, the biggest examination of the Stokes-McCullum philosophy came with the innings defeat in the first Test against South Africa at Lord’s. Despite the scale of the loss, England did not do a lot wrong, but McCullum was right when he said they were “timid”.

England’s response was to…

England v South Africa: Ben Stokes says second-Check win units ‘benchmark’

England set the “benchmark” in their innings win over South Africa in the second Test, says captain Ben Stokes.

Beaten by an innings at Lord’s, England triumphed in three days at Emirates Old Trafford to level the series and set up a decider at the Kia Oval.

“It was an amazing team performance,” said Stokes, who was man of the match for his 103 and four wickets.

“The way in which way we bounced back from the disappointment at Lord’s was very pleasing.”

Having taken a first-innings lead of 264, England bowled South Africa out for 179 on Saturday to earn their fifth win in six Tests.

It was almost an exact reversal of their defeat in the first Test, when they bowled out for 165 and 149 to be defeated inside three days.

“We completely forgot about that performance,” said Stokes. “The way we batted, bowled and fielded in this game was the benchmark of the standards we set.”

Although England earned four successive victories in swashbuckling style at the beginning of the summer, this was…

Forty years on, Hezbollah is remoted however extra highly effective than ever

Many countries including the United States, United Kingdom and Germany as well as Gulf Arab states and the Arab League, have labeled the entire group a terrorist organization, while the European Union and France consider only Hezbollah’s military wing as such. Hassan Nasrallah, the group’s leader, is considered a specially designated global terrorist by the United States and subject to American sanctions as a result.

The movement first emerged in 1982 as a response to Israel’s invasion of Beirut during Lebanon’s bloody civil war. The Israelis met their objective of expelling Palestinian fighters from the country, but catalyzed a more formidable enemy in Hezbollah as a result. Iran’s new regime found the group to be an apt ally, both because of their shared Shiite ideology and because of Hezbollah’s position in the heart of the Arab world. It began providing the group with funding and training soon after it emerged.

Since then, Hezbollah has expanded and flexed its military might….

England v South Africa: The Ben Stokes Present – in additional methods than one

It takes a great all-rounder to be the star of two shows at the same time.

In the case of Ben Stokes, there was an inevitability that the day of his first century as England captain would also mark the release of his documentary Phoenix from the Ashes.

The centre of attention in two places at once.

“Who writes your scripts?” Ian Botham, one of Stokes’ predecessors as an England action hero, was once asked by Graham Gooch.

Stokes doesn’t follow a script. He calls the shots, not only with the way he plays, but how he is moulding the England team in his own image.

His 2019 World Cup and Ashes heroics had already secured his place in English cricketing folklore well before he was given the task of fixing a broken Test team.

The early days of his captaincy suggest that leadership will only add to the legacy. A lost outfit have been given an identity, a romance with forlorn fans has been rekindled. He has even spoken about saving Test cricket itself.

Stokes’ batting method in the first part of…

These Copenhagen designers are dressing A-list influencers, however you’ve got most likely by no means heard of them

Written by Leah Dolan, CNNCopenhagen, Denmark

In March 2022, celebrity fashion counterculturalist Julia Fox arrived at the Vanity Fair Oscar After-Party dressed in a head-turning black leather gown with a halter-neck-turned-hand wrapped around her neck.

The “grip dress” made headlines across the fashion press. Fox’s look had “won the blue carpet,” wrote Vanity Fair, while Grazia called it “a contender for most controversial look ever.” When quizzed about the designer, Fox faltered. “Hans,” she told Vanity Fair that night, “the last name is German and I can’t pronounce.”

It was in fact a Danish last name: Kjøbenhavn as in Han Kjøbenhavn, a label founded by Danish designer Jannik Wikkelsø Davidsen. The look was part of the brand’s Spring-Summer 2022 collection, with a made-to-measure version fashioned for Fox at the request of her stylist Briana…
