All UK households will be given a £400 discount on their energy bills from October.

It comes as energy prices for a typical household rise to £2,500 from the start of the month.

How will the £400 energy discount be paid?

The discount will be made automatically by energy suppliers in England, Scotland and Wales. There is no need to apply.

Direct debit and credit customers will have the money added to their account. Customers with pre-payment meters will have the amount applied to their meter, or receive a voucher.

Anyone who doesn’t use mains gas and electricity – such as those using heating oil – will receive an extra £100 on top of the £400.

Who is getting other cost-of-living payments?

Two payments totalling £650 are also being made to more than eight million low-income households who receive the following benefits:

  • Universal Credit
  • income-based Jobseekers Allowance
  • income-related Employment and…

Iranian safety forces arrest a girl for consuming at restaurant in public with out her hijab, household says

CNN
 —

Iranian security forces arrested a woman after a photo of her and another woman eating at a Tehran restaurant without their head scarves was widely circulated online, her family said Friday. The photo emerged Wednesday showing the two women having breakfast at a cafe that, like most coffeehouses in Iran, is traditionally patronized by men.

One of the women in the photo, Donya Rad, was arrested shortly after the photo was published online. CNN spoke with her sister who said security agencies contacted Donya and summoned her to explain her actions.

“After visiting the designated place she was arrested, after a few hours of no news, Donya told me in a short call that she was transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison,” her sister told CNN. Tehran’s Evin Prison is a notoriously brutal facility where the regime incarcerates political dissidents and is exclusively designated for…

Ian Salisbury: Sussex head coach leaves membership after two years

Ian Salisbury took charge of Sussex’s County Championship and 50-over sides in November 2020

Sussex head coach Ian Salisbury has left the club after almost two years.

The 52-year-old former England player had been responsible for the club’s County Championship and 50-over sides.

The BBC understands he had been placed on gardening leave over the handling of off-spinner Jack Carson and had not taken charge of a game since August.

Last week the club said Salisbury was currently “not part of the business” and Sussex ended the season next-to-bottom of Championship Division Two.

“We would like to thank Ian for his contribution to the club over the last couple of years and wish him well for the future in whatever this may hold,” Sussex chief executive Rob Andrew said in a statement.

“He has helped develop a very promising group of young players and we are looking forward to seeing them progress further in the next few years.”

Leg-spinner Salisbury played in 15 Test matches and four one-day…

Kabul, Afghanistan: Not less than 23 useless after suicide bomb blast at Kaaj instructional heart

Kabul, Afghanistan
CNN
 —

A suicide bomb attack on an education center in Kabul has killed at least 23 people, most of whom are believed to be young women, in the latest sign of the deteriorating security situation in the Afghan capital.

The explosion took place on Friday at the Kaaj education center, in a predominantly Hazara neighborhood – an ethnic minority group that has long faced oppression.

Students were taking a practice university entrance exam at 7:30 a.m., local time (11 p.m. ET) when the blast first took place, Kabul Police Spokesman Khalid Zadran told CNN.

Abdu Ghayas Momand, a doctor from Ali Jinah Hospital, where some of the victims have been taken, said 23 people had been killed and 36 more injured.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.

Taiba Mehtarkhil, an eyewitness, told CNN many of the casualties were…

UK economic system: What subsequent as disaster after disaster hits?

London
CNN Business
 —

There was good news and bad in Friday’s revised data about the UK economy. It grew — marginally — in the second quarter of the year, rather than shrinking as previously estimated.

But the latest update from the Office for National Statistics also showed that the United Kingdom is the only G7 economy that has not recovered fully from the pandemic, with GDP still 0.2% smaller than at the start of 2020. And, according to the Bank of England, the economy is most likely already shrinking again, with inflation heading to 11%.

“The important thing [in Friday’s data] was that the UK is struggling to grow and facing a probable deeper recession down the road, and today’s revision doesn’t change that,” said Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at Oanda.

It may be a long time before it does recover, given the crisis unleashed by Prime…

Brawijaya University develops GIS-based IoT for disaster mitigation – Press Release

Malang, East Java, Indonesia, Sept 30, 2022 – (ACN Newswire) – Brawijaya University has developed an Internet of Things (IoT) technology based on the Geographic Information System (GIS) to mitigate disasters in Pronojiwo district, an area affected by the eruption of Mount Semeru.

A lecturer on urban planning at the Faculty of Engineering of Brawijaya University, Adipandang Yudono, Ph.D., has developed an Internet of Things (IoT) technology based on the Geographic Information System (GIS) to mitigate disasters in Pronojiwo district, an area affected by the eruption of Mount Semeru. ANTARA/HO

“The data generated by IoT can be crucial information in dealing with disaster-affected areas,” a lecturer of urban planning at the university’s Faculty of Engineering, Adipandang Yudono, Ph.D., said here on Thursday.

After the Semeru eruption some time ago, the IoT technology was used to enter a number of data regarding the number of refugees, logistics, the distribution of survivors, the location of the post, medicines, and food, among others, he informed.

According to Yudono, during the recovery period, the GIS-based IoT technology has been used to map the condition of agriculture, livestock, as well as damaged schools in affected areas.

“This data can be used as a support system for determining areas that can be rehabilitated or determining lines for the protected areas,” he said.

Meanwhile, a volcanology and geothermal expert at Brawijaya University, Prof. Sukir Maryanto, said that the IoT system can work via two methods: through human media and the use of sensors.

When using human media, the IoT works in three stages, namely entering or inputting data, which can then be managed using a database, he informed. The database is then forwarded to the operational dashboard.

The operational dashboard contains infographics on the distribution of activities, the number of activities, and their graphs. Meanwhile, electronically, the IoT inputs data based on electronic sensors installed…

Strauss assessment: Jos Buttler says proposed reductions might increase requirements

Jos Buttler replaced Eoin Morgan as captain of the England white-ball teams

Jos Buttler says a proposed reduction in County Championship and T20 Blast matches could raise standards and benefit England.

The England white-ball captain said the process was not “simple”, but fewer games would allow players to prepare and recover better.

His comments come after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) released its high performance review.

The review suggests red-ball games could be cut from 14 to 10 in a season.

The review, led by Sir Andrew Strauss, also suggests dedicated windows for the One-Day Cup, T20 Blast and the Hundred.

It has been met with criticism from many first-class counties who are concerned about the lack of cricket they would be hosting as a result.

When asked by The Sports Desk podcast if he thought reducing the number of County Championship and domestic T20 matches could help improve the England team, Buttler said: “Yeah, I do.

Brazil election: How the well-known yellow soccer shirt has turn into politicised

Neymar wearing the yellow Brazil home shirt, number 10
Brazil are among the favourites for this year’s World Cup in Qatar

When the much-awaited Brazil 2022 World Cup shirt was released in August, student João Vitor Gonçalves de Oliveira rushed to get his hands on the kit.

The 20-year-old went to the nearest store, grabbed the famous yellow and green top and took it to the till, where he was met with an excited smile.

“The shop owner assumed I support the current government because I was buying the shirt, and started to rage against left-wing candidate Lula,” João tells the BBC.

João does not support the government of Jair Bolsonaro, who is standing for re-election on Sunday. But buying the shirt, he realised in the store, could make people think he did.

In order to avoid confrontation, João pretended to be a Bolsonaro supporter. It was another sign that the yellow and green shirt – made famous by Pele, Ronaldo, and many others – has become a symbol of a divided nation.

CUC cuts deal for long-awaited power storage

  • Cayman News Service

(CNS): Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC) has signed a deal with a global energy company to install two 10-megawatt storage systems. This will be the local power provider’s first storage facility, which was approved by OfReg more than three years ago. The project is expected to be finished late next year and will enable CUC to double its renewable energy capacity on Grand Cayman and cut customer bills. But even with this facility allowing an increase in renewables, Cayman will still be far from its 2037 target.

The system, which will be supplied by the Finland-based international energy and engineering company Wärtsilä Energy, will facilitate up to a total of 29MW of distributed customer-sited renewable energy resources without detrimental effects on its…

MHI: Advanced light water reactor “SRZ-1200” – Press Release

TOKYO, Sept 29, 2022 – (JCN Newswire) – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) in collaboration with four Japanese PWR utilities*, has developed the conceptual design of an advanced light water reactor “SRZ-1200”. This reactor has additional safety features when compared to conventional pressurized light water reactors. It is in the intention of MHI to take the SRZ-1200 conceptual design and proceed with basic design efforts. These efforts will ensure new innovative nuclear technologies are available toward a stable energy supply for Japan.

Advanced light water reactor “SRZ-1200”

The SRZ-1200 is a 1,200MWe class advanced light water reactor designed based on enhanced Japanese regulatory safety standards which incorporates lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi accident. Development of the SRZ-1200 is in progress which will ensure the regulatory requirements of “strengthening safety equipment” and “resistance to natural disaster and security against terrorism and unforeseen event” are fulfilled. The cumulation of this development will ensure safety and reliability of the SRZ-1200.

Relative to new safety mechanisms, even though the SRZ-1200 accounts for global lesson learned, low-probability postulated events are still accounted for in the design to ensure plant and public safety. These safety mechanisms include, but are not limited to, an advanced accumulator design, and systems which effectively reduce the probability of radioactivity release in the event of a postulated accident. Efforts of this nature and the resultant SRZ-1200 design features will limit any impact to the public and plant site.

Furthermore, the SRZ-1200 design is intended to enhance operational flexibility which will effectively allow for improved electrical power delivery alongside variable electric power sources such as renewables. The ability to adapt the SRZ-1200 for hydrogen production will also be studied to ensure that all potential uses of energy generated from this plant are…

World Cup 2022: Denmark to put on ‘toned down’ jerseys in protest at hosts Qatar

Kit provider Hummel say it “does not wish to be visible” during the World Cup in Qatar

Denmark will wear “toned down” shirts for the World Cup to protest against host Qatar’s human rights record and its treatment of migrant workers.

Kit provider Hummel has also designed a third, all-black kit, to represent the “colour of mourning”.

Hummel said it “does not wish to be visible” in a tournament it claims “has cost thousands of lives”.

“We support the Danish national team but that isn’t the same as supporting Qatar as a host nation,” it said.

As part of the design, the Denmark badge is also “toned down”. Their playing kit will be a plain red home shirt and an all-white second kit.

Denmark’s training kit sponsors will also withdraw their logos to give room for messages critical of Qatar.

Qatar officials have previously disputed the figures on the death of migrant workers working on World Cup facilities, saying the actual total figure at the time in 2021 was 37.

Hummel said: “We wish to make a…

Richarlison: Brazil condemn racist abuse of Tottenham ahead in Paris

Several objects including a banana were thrown at Richarlison after he scored for Brazil

Brazil have condemned the racist abuse of Richarlison after the forward had a banana and other objects thrown at him in their 5-1 friendly win over Tunisia.

The incident took place after the Tottenham striker celebrated scoring Brazil’s second goal in Paris.

In a statement the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said it “reinforced its position to combat racism” and “repudiates any display of prejudice”.

Brazil had posed with an anti-racism banner prior to kick-off.

The team lined up with a message that read, ‘Without our black players, we wouldn’t have stars on our shirts’.

In a separate statement, CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues added: “Whether on or off the field, attitudes like this cannot be tolerated.”

Strauss evaluation: English cricket should discover compromise over schedule – Richard Thompson

Cricket must “find some compromise” over “radical” plans to overhaul the domestic calendar amid opposition from counties, says England and Wales Cricket Board chair Richard Thompson.

He said plans to cut the number of matches was “a sacrifice I’m prepared to try to sell to the counties”.

But he added “whether some of the proposals being suggested are a bridge too far needs to be decided”.

Any changes must be agreed by two-thirds of the 18 first-class counties.

Thompson, the most powerful figure in the English game who took over last month, warned that international cricket is now facing an “existential problem” with the “threat” of overseas Twenty20 franchise leagues luring top players away.

“We are foreseeing that as a challenge,” he said. “We can’t allow that to play out.”

In a wide-ranging interview, Thompson also told BBC Sport:

  • There is “too much cricket” in an “untenable” international calendar
  • The Hundred was “a big risk that is starting to pay off” but the game had to prevent “one…

Worcester Warriors suspended by RFU and put into administration

Worcester are banned from the Premiership, Premier 15s, under-18s Academy Cup and Allianz Cup with immediate effect

Worcester Warriors have been suspended from playing and will be put into administration after failing to meet a Rugby Football Union funding ultimatum.

The financially stricken club had to provide proof of a “credible” plan for the future by 17:00 BST on Monday.

The men’s team will now be banned from the Premiership and the women’s side from the Premier 15s.

Administration means the men’s side could be sanctioned with either a points deduction or relegation.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), one of the main guarantors of a loan through Sport England, said it had agreed to the directors’ request to place Worcester into administration.

The loan, thought to be about £15m, was part of the government’s sports survival package during the coronavirus pandemic.

A statement added that it was “in order to give the club the best possible chance of survival,…

Keaton Jennings hit a brilliant 190 not out to press his case for an England recall as Lancashire dominated day one against champions Surrey.
