Fb grew to become Meta one yr in the past. Its metaverse dream feels as distant as ever

CNN Business
 —

Even by Facebook’s standards, 2021 was a rough year.

A series of damning reports based on leaks from a whistleblower raised uncomfortable questions about Facebook’s impact on society; the company continued reeling from concerns about the use of its platform to organize the January 6 Capitol riot; and privacy changes from Apple threatened its core advertising business. Meanwhile, young users were flocking to TikTok.

At a virtual reality event on October 28, 2021, CEO Mark Zuckerberg tried to turn the page. Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would change its name to Meta and go all in on building a future version of the internet called the “metaverse,” proving to all in the process that the company he launched in 2004 was more than just a social media business.

One year and billions of dollars later, the so-called metaverse still feels years away, if…

The Completely happy Meal inventor says McDonald’s did not need it at first

New York
CNN Business
 —

McDonald’s said this week that it sold half of its new Happy Meals geared toward adults –Cactus Plant Flea Market Boxes– in just four days. But four decades ago, when the first Happy Meal debuted, the company didn’t quite get it.

“They were reluctant a little bit. They didn’t immediately embrace it,” Bob Bernstein, an advertising executive who created the Happy Meal in the late 1970s, said in a video interview from his Kansas City office, which is decked out with Happy Meal memorabilia and original art. “It took some convincing on our part.”

Bernstein, whose ad agency ran marketing for McDonald’s

Manston migrant processing heart in England operating on dire situations, charities warn

London
CNN
 —

British charities and officials are warning of increasingly dire conditions at a migrant processing center in England and urging Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to act.

The situation at the Manston asylum processing center constituted a “breach of humane conditions,” British Conservative lawmaker Roger Gale said Monday, as dozens of charities wrote to the prime minister to raise concerns about “overcrowding.”

The Manston migration center in Kent, southeast England, is currently holding around 4,000 people, among them women and children, despite being intended to hold only 1,500, local MP Gale told Sky News.

“That is wholly unacceptable,” Gale, who visited the former RAF base last week said, though he added staff were “trying to do a good job under impossible circumstances.”

It comes as dozens of charities signed an open letter from the…

T20 Africa Cup: Zimbabwe coach Dave Houghton requires expanded competitors

Zimbabwe, playing their first global tournament for six years, beat Pakistan by one run at the men’s T20 World Cup on Thursday

Zimbabwe coach Dave Houghton wants an Africa Cup of Nations-style cricket championship to help develop the sport on the continent.

With Namibia opening the tournament by beating Sri Lanka, and South Africa a continual threat at the highest level, Houghton wants an all-encompassing T20 Africa Cup to firmly develop the sport.

“I would love nothing more than to have a [full] African Cup,” Houghton told BBC Sport Africa.

At present, the continent’s top-tier cricket nations – South Africa and Zimbabwe – do not take part in the event.

“I really do think it’s time we got ourselves together – all the cricket nations in Africa – and talked about the chance of having that,” the 65-year-old added.

“Asia play the Asia Cup and they’re all just getting more and more exposure at a good level. I’m hoping it’s not too far off when we can match what they do in Asia and have an…

Ireland 137 all out (18.1 overs): Tucker 71* (48); Maxwell 2-14, Zampa 2-19
Australia won by 42 runs
Scorecard. Table

Australia beat Ireland by 42 runs to boost their hopes of reaching the Men’s T20 World Cup semi-finals, and also hurt England’s last four chances in the process.

After racking up 179-5 in Brisbane – captain Aaron Finch returning to form with 63 from 44 balls – they bowled Ireland out for 137 in 18.1 overs.

The result effectively ends Ireland’s challenge but is also damaging for England, who play their penultimate game of the group against New Zealand on Tuesday.

Australia’s net run-rate, which will split the teams if both England and Australia win their remaining games, has closed up on England’s.

Australia play Afghanistan in their final group game – a match they will expect to win convincingly – while England play Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka after their…

T20 World Cup: Virat Kohli shares video of obvious stranger in his lodge room

Kohli has scored 156 runs in three innings during the T20 World Cup

India batter Virat Kohli says he is “very paranoid” about his safety after sharing a video which appears to show a stranger in his hotel room.

The video, originally shared elsewhere on social media, seems to show someone recording themselves walking around Kohli’s hotel room in Perth.

The hotel said an investigation is under way and a “contractor stood down”

“I’m NOT okay with this kind of fanaticism and absolute invasion of privacy,” Kohli said on Instagram.

“If I cannot have privacy in my own hotel room, then where can I really expect any personal space at all?”

Kohli is one of the biggest names in cricket and was in Perth for India’s T20 World Cup match against South Africa on Sunday.

The video was captioned “King Kohli’s hotel room”. India are now travelling to Adelaide for their match against Bangladesh on Wednesday.

Iran protests: Clashes escape between college students and safety forces throughout Iran, rights teams say

CNN
 —

Violent clashes broke out between security forces and student protesters at university campuses across Iran on Sunday, according to activist and human rights groups in the country.

Students continued to protest in large numbers at some of the country’s main universities despite a warning from the head of the country’s Revolutionary Guard Hossein Salami that Saturday was to be the last day of protest.

In a video obtained by CNN via the pro-reform activist outlet Iran Wire, two uniformed officers can be seen in what appears to be an attempt to arrest a protester. The video is said to be recorded at Sanandaj Technical College in northwestern Iran.

In the capital Tehran, activist groups claimed clashes broke out between protesters, members of the Basij militia and police officers in plain clothes at Azad University but CNN cannot independently verify whether those in…

South Africa moved to the top of Group 2 with a nervy five-wicket victory over India in the Men’s T20 World Cup.

South Africa slipped to 24-3 in reply but David Miller’s 59 from 46 balls saw them home with two balls to spare.

Victory in Perth moves the Proteas ahead of India, who suffer their first defeat of the tournament.

Miller and Aiden Markram put on 76 for the fourth wicket to tip the match back in South Africa’s favour after their poor start with the bat.

Lula and Bolsonaro face run-off in Brazil’s tight presidential election

CNN
 —

Polls opened Sunday in Brazil’s presidential election runoff between former leftist leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and the far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, which has seen polls tighten dramatically in recent weeks.

Voting will continue until 5 p.m. in Brazil’s capital, Brasilia, with the country’s electronic ballot system confirming results about two hours after the voting concludes.

Neither Lula or Bolsonaro gained over 50% of the votes in the first round on October 2, forcing Sunday’s runoff vote.

Lula finished ahead in the initial contest, earning over 6 million votes, and about 5 percentage points, more than Bolsonaro. However, the President stayed ahead in the crucial southeastern states such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil has more than 156 million people eligible to vote in the election, and voting is mandatory in the country…

Israel election: 5 polls in 4 years: What is the take care of Israeli politics?

Jerusalem
CNN
 —

Stop us if you’re heard this one before: On Tuesday, Israelis are going to the polls to elect a new Knesset, or parliament. It’s the fifth time in less than four years that voters are casting ballots. Holding elections that often is bound to prompt some questions. Here are some answers.

Israel has a parliamentary system made up of several parties – none of which have ever received enough votes on their own to secure a majority of seats in parliament. That means parties must team up to form coalitions and reach the 61 seats needed to form a ruling government. Those coalitions can also be shaky – lose one party’s support, or sometimes even one member of parliament, and you’ve lost the majority.

The other factor is Benjamin Netanyahu. He served as prime minister for longer than anyone else in Israeli history, is in the midst of a corruption trial, and overall…

T20 World Cup: England should recapture Eoin Morgan’s attacking fashion, says Moeen Ali

Moeen was the only batter to find his timing against Ireland

England need to recapture the aggressive batting approach styled by Eoin Morgan to win the Men’s T20 World Cup, says all-rounder Moeen Ali.

The top order has been unusually subdued, only hitting 15 boundaries across the two completed matches.

“We’ve got to be brave and play the way we want to play,” said Moeen.

“If we’re going to win this competition we have to play like that.

“We bat all the way down so we might as well entertain everybody, entertain ourselves and enjoy getting those 70s or 80s off 30 balls because that’s what really takes the game away.

“Getting 160-170 on good wickets against good sides makes it too easy for them.”

Former skipper Morgan, who retired in the summer before Jos Buttler took over as captain, revolutionised England’s white-ball cricket by encouraging an attacking approach from batters, culminating in winning the 2019 50-over World Cup.

Three years on, defeat to Ireland came when, chasing 158,…

Rivian house owners can not help however gush about their vans, flaws and all

Washington, DC
CNN
 —

Denis Wang says he always hated the car-buying process — until he met Rivian.

Buying the automaker’s R1T electric pickup was so wonderful that he says he drove 45 minutes to Rivian’s Irvine, California, office to take the Rivian employee who shepherded him through his purchase out for coffee. (Rivian pairs new buyers with a “guide” who answers any questions during the process.)

Wang said he brought a thank you card, and a $100 gift card to REI, knowing that his guide had a trip to South America coming up.

“I felt like I kind of owed it to him,” Wang told CNN Business. “He was really invested in this whole process and wanted to make sure I had a great experience.”

For example, Wang said his guide remembered a configuration of the R1T he was initially interested in, and found a vehicle that matched it and offered it to…

What occurs to unsold Yeezy merchandise? Destroy it, rebrand it, export it

New York
CNNBusiness
 —

Yeezy merchandise has no place to go.

Retailers are dumping it. Resellers are blocking new product listings associated with it. Even off-price outlets like TJ Maxx don’t want any goods associated with hate-speaker Kanye West, the embattled rapper who has legally changed his name to Ye.

So where will the mounting glut of Yeezy products — sneakers, sweatshirts, sweatpants, jackets, T-shirts, bags — wind up?

Industry analysts suggest three outcomes: It will be rebranded, exported for donation or sale in secondary markets or destroyed.

In other words, Yeezy might be headed to landfills.

It’s a dramatic fall from grace for a once highly-coveted label, especially the Yeezy-branded sneakers that commanded thousands of dollars on the resale market.

“There really are no good options for this distressed…

Weapons, God and pretend information dominate Brazil’s presidential race

Sao Paulo
CNN
 —

The thundering sound of gunfire reverberates through a room during a seemingly endless barrage.

It’s just after seven in the evening and the G-16 gun range in São Paulo is busy, as patrons file in to unwind after a busy day at work. Shooting ranges like G-16 have thrived and expanded in the past few years, gaining more members as sales of guns and ammunition rise.

The credit, according to G-16’s co-owner, Daniel Pazzini, goes to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

“He basically did free advertising, encouraging people to buy guns and defend themselves that way,” Pazzini said, referring to Bolsonaro’s longstanding pro-gun message. Two large portraits of the President decorate the walls of his range, next to a plethora of handguns, shotguns and some large caliber rifles.

Pablo Marí: Stabbed Arsenal defender faces two months out after surgical procedure

Marí joined Italian side Monza on a season-long loan from Arsenal in August

Arsenal’s Pablo Marí said he felt “lucky” to escape life-threatening injuries after being stabbed and seeing “a person die in front of me” in an Italian supermarket.

Milan’s Niguarda hospital performed surgery to reconstruct two injured muscles in Marí’s back.

Italy’s Carabinieri police said a 47-year-old supermarket employee was killed in Thursday’s attack.

Another employee was left injured along with four customers, including Marí.

The 29-year-old, who is on loan at Monza from Arsenal, had been walking around the supermarket with his wife and son when he was stabbed in the back, reports Gazzetta dello Sport

Monza said Marí’s surgery went well, adding that he will remain in hospital for two or three days before starting the rehabilitation process.

Ben Duckett: England batter’s lengthy highway again to squad for tour of Pakistan

Ben Duckett made 145 for England Lions against South Africa in August

Ben Duckett doesn’t want to talk about Perth.

To the Nottinghamshire batter, there are too many good things happening now to keep going back to that 2017 night in The Avenue bar, when he poured a drink over James Anderson and found himself banned from playing on the England Lions tour of Australia.

Five years on, Duckett is set to resume a Test career that comprises four matches against Bangladesh and India in 2016.

As recently as a year ago the left-hander thought he would never play another Test, but a prolific summer has put him in prime position to open the batting alongside Zak Crawley in Pakistan in December, moving up from the number-three spot he occupies for Notts.

Carbon Capture in the Steel Industry: ArcelorMittal, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries… – Press Release

TOKYO, Oct 28, 2022 – (JCN Newswire) – ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading global steel and mining company, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering (MHIENG), a pioneer in carbon capture technology, leading global resources company, BHP, along with Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd are collaborating on a multi-year trial of MHIENG’s carbon capture technology with ArcelorMittal, following the signing of a funding agreement between the parties. The companies will also conduct a feasibility and design study to support progress to full scale deployment.

ArcelorMittal’s steel plant

The agreement, which involves a trial at ArcelorMittal’s steel plant in Gent, Belgium and another site in North America, brings together the expertise of the various partners in identifying ways to enhance carbon capture and utilization and/or storage (CCUS) technologies in the hard-to-abate steelmaking industry. The industry is estimated to account for around 7-9% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. CCUS has the potential to be a key technology for reducing emissions from existing global blast furnaces, which are anticipated to remain a significant portion of steel production over coming decades. The IEA estimates CCUS technology needs to apply to more than 53% of primary steel production by 2050, equivalent to 700 Mtpa of CO2, for the Net Zero Emissions scenario.

There are no full scale operational CCUS facilities in blast furnace steelmaking operations at present, with only a limited number of small capacity carbon capture or utilization pilots underway or in the planning phases globally. However, later this year ArcelorMittal Gent will commission its Steelanol project, a scale demonstration plant that will capture carbon-rich process gases from the blast furnace and convert them into ethanol.

To further understand how carbon capture technology can be incorporated into existing steel plants, ArcelorMittal is facilitating the trial at its 5 million-tonnes-a-year steel plant in Gent,…
