Kroger and Albertsons need to create a grocery empire. The final grocery store mega-merger backfired

New York
CNN Business
 —

When Christine Martinez found out last month that Kroger and Albertsons planned to merge in a deal worth nearly $25 billion, she thought, “here we go again.”

Martinez lost her job as a pharmacy technician in the aftermath of a prior supermarket mega-merger: Albertsons’ $9 billion tie-up with Safeway in 2014.

That deal has since become a cautionary tale of what can go wrong when two supermarket giants merge. Now the fallout from that troubled transaction hangs over this latest, even bigger merger proposal. The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing Tuesday afternoon to scrutinize the potential impact of the Kroger-Albertson merger.

Back in 2014, Martinez was working for a subsidiary of Safeway in Valencia, California.”It was a really great company,” she said. “Morale was very high. They cared about our needs. We could depend on…

Lionel Messi has penalty saved however Argentina progresses to World Cup knockout levels with win

CNN
 —

Lionel Messi had a penalty saved but Argentina booked its ticket to the knockout phase of the 2022 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Poland.

Alexis Mac Allister’s scuffed effort 60 seconds into the second half broke the deadlock before Julián Álvarez’s brilliant curled shot sealed the three points as Argentina advanced as Group C winners.

The opener came after Messi, Argentina’s all-time top goalscorer, had his penalty saved by Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny.

Álvarez’s sublime finish midway through the second half capped off a nail-biting evening for Argentina, who will now face Australia.

Poland advanced to the knockout stages by the skin of its teeth, qualifying on goal difference.

The other Group C game was a thrilling affair, Mexico beating Saudi Arabia 2-1, but the win wasn’t enough for the Central American team and…

Large moments for girls on the males’s World Cup

A version of this story appears in CNN’s What Matters newsletter. To get it in your inbox, sign up for free here.

CNN
 —

An unexpected result of the US Men’s National Team reaching the knockout round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar is that the US Women’s National Team will get its largest collective payday, equally splitting $13 million in winnings with the men.

It’s a big deal for American women who have long sought pay equity, and it amplifies the extreme sliding scale of women’s rights around the globe.

Consider that this payday for US women was won when the US men’s team defeated Iran, a country where authorities are brutally tamping down protests by women who want basic human rights.

The US Women’s National Team excels at soccer and fought hard for years for equal pay.

The earnings they’ll split with the American men could…

Deep cuts at AMC Networks indicators turbulent time for media trade

New York
CNN Business
 —

“The mechanisms for the monetization of content are in disarray.”

That’s what AMC Networks Chair James Dolan told his employees on Tuesday when he delivered the grim news that a “large-scale layoff,” in addition to “significant” operating cuts, will soon take place at the company. The cuts, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, will amount to 20% of its US workforce, which is roughly 1,700 employees, AMC said.

In his memo to employees, Dolan said it is a “confusing and uncertain time in our industry.” He blamed the grave situation at the network — which was once home to television’s hottest shows, such as “Breaking Bad,” “Mad Men,” and “The Walking Dead” — squarely on cord-cutting.

“At the same time we have seen the rise of direct to consumer streaming apps including our own AMC+. It was our belief that cord…

China coming into ‘new stage and mission’ for Covid-19 controls, says official, following protests

CNN
 —

China’s most senior official in charge of its Covid response told health officials Wednesday that the country faced a “new stage and mission” in pandemic controls, state media Xinhua reported – potentially indicating an adjustment to Beijing’s “zero-Covid” strategy which has sparked days of nationwide protests.

“With the decreasing toxicity of the Omicron variant, the increasing vaccination rate and the accumulating experience of outbreak control and prevention, China’s pandemic containment faces new stage and mission,” Sun Chunlan, China’s vice premier, said Wednesday, according to Xinhua.

Making no mention of “zero-Covid,” her remarks, as reported by Xinhua, came a day after China’s National Health Commission (NHC) said the rectification of current pandemic measures is underway and local governments should “respond to and resolve the reasonable…

(CNS): On Monday and Tuesday an additional 18 migrants arrived in local waters in two separate vessels. All of the men and women are now in the custody of Customs and Border Control as they begin the immigration process. In what is turning out to be one of the busiest years here for Cuban migrants since the 1990s, CBC now has around 350 migrants held at the detention centre, various district civic facilities and in the community.

The first of these latest two groups arrived in East End at about 1:30am Monday. That vessel was carrying ten adults (four women and six men), who all disembarked. Then on Tuesday night at around 9:30pm, a boat with five men and three women arrived in Cayman Brac. They also all came ashore and are now going through the established protocols.

Ben Stokes: England all-rounder doesn’t rule out ODI World Cup return

Ben Stokes has won 105 one-day international caps for England

Ben Stokes has not ruled out the possibility of coming out of one-day international retirement to play at the World Cup in India next year.

The England Test captain, 31, retired from ODIs in July, citing pressure on his workload.

He starred in England’s 2019 World Cup final win and did the same again when they were crowned T20 champions in Australia earlier this month.

“Who knows how I might feel towards a World Cup at the time,” he said.

The next 50-over World Cup is in India in October and November 2023.

Stokes is currently leading England in their Test series in Pakistan. He was one of the players that missed training on Wednesday as illness affected the England camp.

A decision on whether the first Test will go ahead as scheduled will be taken at 02:30 GMT on Thursday (07:30 local time).

Speaking before he fell ill, Stokes revealed he was approached by director of cricket Rob Key in the aftermath of the T20 success about a…

Journey warnings: What different nations inform their residents about US violence

(CNN) — American travelers — at least those of the cautious variety — might be familiar with the US State Department’s travel advisories.

The agency monitors the world for potential trouble and issues warnings from “Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions” to “Level 4: Do Not Travel,” alerting would-be visitors to terrorism threats, war, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, high crime rates and other personal security issues.

But have you ever wondered how other countries’ governments caution their citizens about coming to the United States? What kind of reputation does America have?

CNN Travel checked out what the governments of the United States’ neighbors and closest allies have to tell their citizens about coming here. It’s not exactly a flattering picture.

Would-be visitors aren’t being warned off entirely as if America is an active war zone. Each nation has its own approach, but a general theme boils down to this: The United States is more violent than what you’re used to. Learn…

Titan Projects 10x Business Growth in 2022 since Partnering with aCommerce in th… – Press Release

BANGKOK & MANILA, Nov 30, 2022 – (ACN Newswire) – As the first and only basketball specialty concept store in the Philippines, Titan started as a brick-and-mortar retail business in 2010. The retailer established stores in posh locations and around the metropolis, such as Bonifacio Global City, Megamall, Conrad, Vertis, Alabang, and Solenad.

Titan 22 – For Love of the Game

While a great part of its success can be attributed to its physical stores, the brand recognized the obvious opportunities of opening online stores. This prospect compelled Titan to become an e-commerce pioneer to open an online channel ahead of other industry players. The brand, however, needed internal expertise to operate a digital store. As a result, it chose to hand over its online business operations to a specialist e-commerce enabler, which provided guidance and expertise in the operations and logistics departments of running an e-commerce channel.

But like any other business, the company wanted to grow more, leading it to explore potential partners that could help it achieve more success.

aCommerce was initially referred to Titan in 2016 by the regional team of one of its biggest brand partners. To succeed in this area, the company believed that simply employing a service provider was not enough. It needed a committed and capable partner.

“TITAN saw aCommerce as not just a third-party service provider as an enabler, but as an overall key partner to grow within the long run,” said Raymond Canteras, Titan’s Digital Director.

Strategies for Success

One of TITAN’s key priorities has always been to continuously innovate to provide consumers with the best experiences, whether online or offline. With the help of aCommerce, the brand launched its first mobile application in 2018, bringing it closer to consumers with just a flick and click on their mobile phones.

“By being deeply connected to the consumers, we get to understand them better and know how to serve them in the best and most seamless ways…

World Cup 2022: Wales 0-3 England: Rashford double helps Three Lions prime group

Marcus Rashford inspired England to the victory required to top Group B and ensure it was despair for Wales as they went out of the tournament after a bitterly disappointing World Cup campaign.

Wales needed to either beat England and hope Iran and USA ended in a draw or pursue the more unlikely outcome of running up a four-goal victory margin at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.

England, who now face Senegal in the last 16 on Sunday (19:00 GMT), ensured neither scenario was ever a serious consideration as they dominated throughout and took full control after an uneventful first 45 minutes.

Wales manager Rob Page took the bold decision to substitute Gareth Bale at half-time, although the great talisman had only had seven touches in an anonymous display, but any hope the shock tactic would work was wiped out as England scored twice within six minutes of the restart.

Marcus Rashford fired a free-kick past Danny Ward following Ethan Ampadu’s foul on Phil Foden after 50 minutes, with the…

A glance again at Elon Musk’s chaotic first month at Twitter

CNN
 —

Sunday officially marks one month since the world’s richest man took the helm at Twitter.

In that time, Elon Musk initiated mass layoffs and gave remaining staffers a cryptic ultimatum, reinstated the accounts of controversial figures including former President Donald Trump, and launched – then punted – a plan to charge for Twitter’s iconic blue checkmarks.

After spending months embroiled in an unsuccessful legal battle to get out of his initial proposal to buy Twitter, Musk made his first splashy entrance into the company’s offices on Oct. 26, carrying a sink. (In a video of the incident shared on Twitter, he wrote: “Entering Twitter HQ – let that sink in!)

Since then, the billionaire has seemingly left no stone unturned during his whirlwind first month as “Chief Twit.” Here is a look at the range of ways Musk (who is still, simultaneously, CEO of…

Marion Barter: The seek for a lacking mom surfaces claims of her lover’s ‘lifetime of deceit’

Brisbane, Australia
CNN
 —

Marion Barter won plaudits for her warmth as an elementary school teacher, but in 1997 the 51-year-old mother-of-two became restless, quit her job, sold her house, and flew from Australia’s beach-lined Gold Coast to start a new life in Europe.

Her family never saw her again.

If Barter had vanished without a trace, Australian police may have taken her case more seriously, but when her daughter, Sally Leydon, reported her missing, she wasn’t added to the missing persons list, and later a police officer told her Barter wanted no contact with her family.

For Leydon, there were too many unanswered questions, and 25 years later she is still searching for answers.  Did her mother leave of her own accord, and did she truly want to vanish?

For more than three years, journalists working with Leydon and a band of amateur…

Somalia: Gunfire heard inside besieged resort, parliament session delayed

Reuters
 —

Gunfire was heard on Monday from inside a besieged hotel in the Somali capital that was attacked on the weekend, a nearby resident and a police officer said, while parliament said it had postponed a scheduled session.

The Villa Rose hotel, near the presidential residence, was stormed on Sunday by attackers of al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab, using guns and explosives, with a police officer saying at the time that some government officials escaped from its windows.

“There is still heavy gunfire inside the hotel, and we hear explosions from time to time … we are still in our houses since last night, when the siege started,” Ismail Haaji, who lives near the hotel, told Reuters.

Special forces units, known as Gaashaan and Haramcad, had taken over operations, said a police officer at the scene who spoke on condition of anonymity.

On-line Black Friday gross sales set a brand new document

New York
CNN Business
 —

Online Black Friday sales in the United States topped a record-breaking $9.12 billion this year, according to Adobe Analytics, kicking off a solid start to the holiday shopping season despite inflation and other economic concerns.

Adobe, which tracks sales on retailer websites, said that this year’s Black Friday online sales were 2.3% higher compared to last year, with electronics, smart home equipment, toys and exercise equipment providing the biggest boost. Some of that growth reflects higher prices and not higher volume, since the firm’s figures aren’t adjusted for inflation. But Adobe said sales would have been higher even if inflation were factored in.

Americans are dipping into their savings accounts and racking up debt on credit cards to make purchases, according to Claire Tassin, Morning Consult’s retail and e-commerce analyst.

Nice Barrier Reef ought to be positioned on the ‘at risk’ record, UN-backed report exhibits

CNN
 —

The Great Barrier Reef should be added to the list of world heritage sites that are “in danger”, a team of scientists concluded after conducting a mission to the world’s largest coral reef system.

In a new UN-backed report released on Monday, the scientists said that the reef is facing major threats due to the climate crisis and that action to save it needs to be taken “with upmost urgency.”

“The mission team concludes that the property is faced with major threats that could have deleterious effects on its inherent characteristics, and therefore meets the criteria for inscription on the list of World Heritage in danger,” the report said.

The 10-day monitoring mission by UNESCO scientists in March came months after the World Heritage Committee made an initial recommendation to list Australia’s Great Barrier Reef as “in danger” due to the…

England are on the verge of reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup, but Wales face an uphill battle in their quest to make the last 16.

A 2-0 defeat by Iran means Wales will need to beat England on Tuesday, and hope results go their way, if they are to progress on their first World Cup appearance since 1958.

England’s drab goalless draw with the United States saw them miss the chance to wrap up qualification, but Gareth Southgate’s side will go through regardless if they avoid a four-goal defeat by Wales.

The group winner will play their second-round knock-out game at 19:00 GMT on Sunday, 4 December, while the group runner-up will play at 15:00 GMT on…

The poor driving habits on local roads are well documented and illustrated by the number of crashes reported every day. But there are also concerns that road rage is on the rise. Tensions are mounting…

Brazil head coach Tite says the high number of fouls on Neymar “has to be stopped” after the forward was injured in their group-stage win over Serbia.

Neymar appeared to be in tears on the bench after being substituted in the 80th minute with a sprained ankle.

The 30-year-old was on the receiving end of a heavy tackle from Nikola Milenkovic in the 2-0 win on Thursday.

“If you want to celebrate the football, you have to pay attention to the fouls,” said Tite.

“They focus on specific players. This is the effect. This has to be stopped.”

Since his first World Cup in 2014, Neymar has been fouled 53 times in the competition, at least 11 more than any other player.

World Cup 2022: Croatia 4-1 Canada – Andrej Kramaric scores twice to ship Canada out

Canada had gone four World Cup games without scoring before Alphonso Davies’ goal

Alphonso Davies scored Canada’s first ever World Cup goal, but it was not enough to stop them being knocked out of the tournament following a defeat by Croatia.

Bayern Munich winger Davies’ second-minute opener gave Canada hope, but they ended up second best and have suffered back-to-back defeats in their first two group matches.

In Group F’s earlier game, Morocco shocked world number two side Belgium 2-0 and are second in the standings, behind 2018 finalists Croatia.

John Herdman’s outsiders scored from the game’s first attack after only 67 seconds courtesy of a towering header from Davies, who darted into the box and powerfully converted from Tajon Buchanan’s cross.

Croatia, though, did not panic after falling behind and created numerous chances, with striker Andrej Kramaric seeing a goal ruled out for offside.

But the former Leicester player then equalised with a first-time angled shot from Ivan…

England’s players do not “need fans to boo” them to know they have not played well, says forward Marcus Rashford.

The Three Lions sit top of Group B and remain in a strong position to reach the last 16, largely because of their 6-2 thrashing of Iran in their opener.

World Cup 2022: Belgium 0-2 Morocco – Abdelhamid Sabiri and Zakaria Aboukhlal seal late win

Morocco caused the latest shock at a World Cup that has been full of surprises by beating Belgium thanks to late goals by Abdelhamid Sabiri and Zakaria Aboukhlal.

Belgium keeper Thibaut Courtois was at fault for the first goal, inexplicably allowing Sabiri’s inswinging free-kick to beat him at his near post with 17 minutes to go.

But the whole Belgium side paid the price for a ponderous performance, with Morocco capping a magnificent second-half display when Aboukhlal fired Hakim Ziyech’s cutback into the roof of the net in stoppage time.

That sparked wild celebrations in the stands of Al Thumama Stadium from thousands of Morocco fans, who had created a raucous atmosphere from the start.

The result means Morocco move above Belgium to the top of Group F on four points, with Croatia and Canada meeting later on Sunday (16:00 GMT kick-off).
