‘Restoration’ farm releases trailer forward of movie premiere

Beacon Farms

(CNS): A documentary film, three years in the making, about Beacon Farms, the unique working rehabilitation farm in North Side, is set to premiere on 8 February and a trailer has been released ahead of the full screening. Directed and produced by local filmmaker Candy Whicker, it follows the trials and tribulations of the experimental farm, which employs people in recovery from substance abuse as they learn new skills, experiment with innovative farming techniques, rebuild their lives and break new ground in local agriculture.

Speaking about the movie, Whicker said she wanted to record how 34 acres of bush were transformed into an organic working farm while retaining aspects of the wilderness as a haven for the Cayman Islands’ flora and fauna. What began as a video diary idea spanning a year became a three-year project, not least because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The film is about the transformation of the people and the property into a successful project…

Utah companies face urgency to rethink how to attract and retain tech talent

The Utah tech market is growing but companies are struggling to attract and keep the talent to support it, according to a ProFocus Technology survey, Utah Tech in Focus: 2023 Trends Report. Despite 50% of respondents expecting revenue to increase and 34% expecting to increase headcount, almost half (46%) rank finding talent as their biggest tech talent challenge, followed by retention at 29%.

Burnout is a reality among the Utah tech community, with 63% of survey respondents reporting feeling burned out. Fifty-nine percent (59%) say their tech team is overworked, and 38% anticipate working more hours this year over last. Seventy-six percent (76%) say they are open to changing jobs in 2023, with 42% actively looking for a new position and 34% open to a move for the right opportunity.

The importance of compensation

Forty percent (40%) of survey respondents say salary/compensation is the most important factor in attracting and retaining top tech talent, yet just 38% report that overall compensation for the tech team will increase this year and 10% report compensation will decrease.

“For Utah companies looking to maintain their innovative edge, these findings should serve as motivation to look at new ways to recruit and retain the best tech talent,” said John Boone, ProFocus Technology Founder and President. “The survey findings are consistent with what we are seeing with clients: the tech community in Utah has made it clear they are looking for competitive compensation and meaningful work, and Utah businesses should take note.”

Boone added, “Companies need to be very intentional about keeping their tech workforce happy. In addition to compensation, ensuring workers are offered development opportunities, instilling a strong culture, and balancing remote work needs will all play significant roles in which Utah companies win the best tech talent.”

South Africa’s energy blackouts are inflicting havoc for residents

Johannesburg, South Africa
CNN
 —

Car crashes, opportunistic criminals, rotting food, decomposing bodies, bankrupt businesses, and water shortages. Welcome to life under South Africa’s power blackouts.

Last week the grim extent of the outages was laid bare when South Africans were advised to bury dead loved ones within four days.

In a public statement, the South African Funeral Practitioners Association warned that bodies in mortuaries were rapidly decomposing because of the unrelenting electricity outages, putting huge pressure on funeral parlors struggling to process corpses.

The situation is so bad that the country’s President Cyril Ramaphosa is considering declaring a national disaster, similar to one in 2020 at the height of the Covid pandemic, which had a devastating effect on the country’s economy.

Last week scores of supporters from the Democratic…

Pope Francis to go to two fragile African nations

CNN
 —

Pope Francis starts a trip on Tuesday to two fragile African nations often forgotten by the world, where protracted conflicts have left millions of refugees and displaced people grappling with hunger.

The Jan. 31-Feb 5 visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan, takes the 86-year-old pope to places where Catholics make up about half of the populations and where the Church is a key player in health and education systems as well as in democracy-building efforts.

The trip was scheduled to take place last July but was postponed because Francis was suffering a flare-up of a chronic knee ailment. He still uses a wheelchair and cane, but his knee has improved significantly.

Both countries are rich in natural resources – DRC in minerals and South Sudan in oil – but beset with poverty and strife.

Some auto insurers are refusing to cowl some Hyundai and Kia fashions

CNN
 —

Progressive and State Farm, two of America’s largest auto insurers, are refusing to write policies in certain cities for some older Hyundai and Kia models that have been deemed too easy to steal, according to the companies.

Several reports say the companies have stopped offering insurance on these vehicles in cities that include Denver, Colorado and St. Louis, Missouri. The insurance companies did not tell CNN which cities or states were involved.

The Highway Loss Data Institute released insurance claims data last September that confirmed what various social media accounts had been saying: Some 2015 through 2019 Hyundai and Kia models are roughly twice as likely to be stolen as other vehicles of similar age, because many of them lack some of the basic auto theft prevention technology included in most other vehicles in those years, according to the HLDI.

Introducing COVOLP: The Future of Crypto Leverage Trading – Press Release

ATLANTA, Jan. 30, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — COVOLP provides liquidity for leverage trading in the Covo Finance ecosystem. Covo Finance is a decentralized spot and perpetual exchange that enables direct trading of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Chainlink from crypto wallets with low fees and zero price-impact trades.

COVOLP holders benefit from the trading activity on the platform, earning a profit when leverage traders incur a loss and vice versa.

Minting and Redeeming COVOLP

Minting COVOLP can be done by bridging any of the COVOLP Pool-supported tokens to Polygon, with the ability to mint COVOLP using BTC, ETH, MATIC, USDC, DAI, LINK, and UNI.

To mint COVOLP, visit https://ift.tt/gIs1kaW and enter the amount of COVOLP to purchase. Fees for buying COVOLP vary based on the asset distribution of the index, which can be seen on the Buy COVOLP page. After purchasing, COVOLP tokens will be automatically staked and start earning rewards from Platform fees. Rewards earned on COVOLP can be checked in the dashboard.

Redeeming COVOLP is also straightforward. Visit the Redeem page and enter the amount of COVOLP to redeem. There is a minimum holding time of 15 minutes after minting before holders can redeem COVOLP tokens.

To get the lowest fees, check the “Save on Fees” section for the token with the lowest fees.

Rebalancing COVOLP

The fees for minting, burning, or swapping COVOLP will vary based on whether the action improves or reduces the balance of assets. For example, if the index has a large percentage of ETH and a small percentage of USDC, activities that increase the amount of ETH will have a high fee, while actions that reduce the amount of ETH will have a low fee.

Token weights are adjusted to hedge COVOLP holders based on traders’ open positions. If many traders are long on ETH, for example, ETH will have a higher token weight. If many traders are short, then stablecoins will have a higher token weight.

If token prices increase, COVOLP will also…

Pair of Kenyans take Home Life Time Miami Marathon Titles – Press Release

18,000 runners representing all 50 states and 69 countries competed in iconic event

MIAMI, Jan. 29, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — They were nearly 8,000 miles from home in the urban center of Kisii, Kenya, but their individual pursuits for Life Time Miami Marathon titles brought them together in South Florida on Sunday. Originating from farming families in southwest Kenya, George Onyancha and Damaris Areba both secured easy victories in their inaugural appearances in Miami’s signature running event.

Twenty-nine-year-old Onyancha (2:18:25) finished nearly six minutes ahead of Siraj Amda (2:24:16) of New York in the men’s Marathon. Twenty-seven-year-old Areba turned in the second fastest time in Miami Marathon history (2:33:49) bettered only by fellow Kenyan Martha Akeno’s course record (2:29:00) last year. Isgah Cheruto (2:36:19) of Minneapolis was second behind Areba.

Onyancha and Areba were winners of few words. “I was leading and had another runner behind me until the 25K mark,” Onyancha said. “Since I didn’t know what his strategy was, I thought: ‘Let me take off.”

Areba was more focused on the uniqueness of the course route. The U.S.TAF-certified and Boston Marathon-qualifying circuit showcased the best views of Miami’s cityscape and waterways during the 26.2-mile and 13.1-mile races. “The lights on the big ships, they’re so beautiful,” Areba said.

It was the 21st edition of the Life Time Miami Marathon and Half, which wound through downtown Miami, Miami Beach and Coconut Grove. The event’s sold-out field of 18,000 runners came from all 50 states and 69 countries – generating upwards of $50 million in economic impact to the Miami community. Colombia (1,300) and Mexico (1,100) led a wave of Latino runners, while nearly 1,000 U.S.-based runners represented the state of New York.

The Marathon began in front of the downtown Miami-Dade Arena before heading to South Beach via the MacArthur Causeway and then back downtown along the Venetian Causeway. Runners then headed south…

Lecanemab Receives Priority Review Status in Japan – Press Release

TOKYO and CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 29, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Eisai Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, CEO: Haruo Naito, “Eisai”) and Biogen Inc. BIIB Corporate headquarters: Cambridge, Massachusetts, CEO: Christopher A. Viehbacher, “, Biogen”, ))) announced today that an application for manufacturing and marketing approval for lecanemab (generic name, U.S. brand name: LEQEMBI™), an anti-amyloid-β (Aβ) protofibril* antibody, in Japan has been designated for Priority Review by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW). Priority Review in Japan is granted to new medicines recognized as having high medical utility for serious diseases, and once designated for Priority Review, the target total review period is shortened.

In Japan, Eisai submitted the manufacturing and marketing approval for lecanemab to the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) on January 16, 2023. This application is based on the results of the Phase III Clarity AD study and the Phase IIb clinical study (Study 201), which demonstrated that lecanemab treatment showed a reduction of clinical decline in early AD.

Lecanemab selectively binds and eliminates soluble, toxic Aβ aggregates (protofibrils) that are thought to contribute to the neurotoxicity in AD. As such, lecanemab may have the potential to have an effect on disease pathology and to slow down the progression of the disease. The Clarity AD study of lecanemab met its primary endpoint and all key secondary endpoints with highly statistically significant results. In November 2022, the results of the Clarity AD study were presented at the 2022 Clinical Trials on Alzheimer’s Disease (CTAD) conference and simultaneously published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a peer-reviewed medical journal.

In the U.S., lecanemab was granted accelerated approval as a treatment for AD by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on January 6, 2023. On the same day, Eisai submitted a Supplemental Biologics License…

Andy Carroll was sent off for the visitors after picking up his second yellow card shortly before Fred backheeled in the hosts’ third goal from Bruno Fernandes’ cross.

McDonald’s is testing a brand new strawless lid

New York
CNN
 —

Just like the McRib, straws might be a thing of the past at McDonald’s.

The chain has begun testing strawless lids in some US cities as part of a multi-year effort to make its packaging more environmentally friendly.

“These lids help optimize our packaging and eliminate the use of small plastics, just one example of the many solutions we’re reviewing as part of our ongoing global commitment to reduce waste,” a McDonald’s spokesperson said in a statement.

The plastic lids have a pullback tab to prevent the drink from splashing out. To drink from it, customers have to pull the tab back and slot it into a small opening. It’s similar to the “sippy cup” lid at Starbucks that has been in use for the past three years.

German parliament formally commemorates LGBTQ victims of Nazi regime for first time

Berlin
CNN
 —

The German parliament for the first time on Friday focused its annual Holocaust memorial commemorations on people persecuted and killed over their sexual or gender identity during World War II.

Campaigners in Germany have worked for decades to establish an official ceremony to commemorate the LGBTQ victims persecuted under the Nazi regime.

“Today’s hour of remembrances focuses on a group of victims which had to fight for a long time to achieve recognition: people who were persecuted by the National Socialists because of their sexual orientation or their gender identity,” Baerbel Bas, president of the Bundestag lower house, said while opening a ceremony marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation.

Section 175 of the German penal code had made sexual intercourse between men punishable by imprisonment. The…

The Global Pet Smart Tracker Market size is expected to reach $1.7 billion by 2028, rising at a market growth of 9.7% CAGR during the forecast period.

Market Growth Factors

Allow Pets Exploring Outdoors Securely

Pets love running around, exploring their surroundings, and being outdoors without leashes. Many owners desire to send their pets outdoors and let them explore their neighborhood or run freely in their backyard without having to constantly look at them or make them be in a particular place. Pet trackers can help lower the owner’s stress level when their pets are alone and also save them from installing high fencing around their house to keep their pets from running away.

Growing Concerns Towards Pet’s Health & Care

There is a rise in pet health awareness among owners. The increasing adoption of animals as companions for children or adults and even for security & status purposes raise the adoption rate and the expenditure on their care. Private and public organizations have launched many initiatives to educate parents about their pet’s needs and care. Affection and Companionship are the basic pillars in the relationship between a pet and its owner. The rise in awareness towards the healthcare of pets is expected to boost the market for pet smart tracker.

Pet Type Outlook

Based on the pet type, the pet smart tracker market is segmented into dogs and cats. The dogs segment procured the largest revenue share in the pet smart tracker market in 2021. This is due to the rising nuclear family trends, couples without children, dual income families, and the preference to choose dogs for security and companionship purposes. Dogs are the…

The company’s Chief Financial Officer, Kim Andreasen, said: “We are proud to have continued to grow our business despite facing a difficult macroeconomic environment in 2022. We focused on those things we are able to control, and we overcame supply chain challenges to report our highest annual revenue to date.”

The demand for automation in Europe slowed in 2022 following the start of the war in Ukraine. Universal Robots’ results have also been impacted by the change in exchange rates, which created an additional headwind to growth.

Poised to meet growing demand

Despite the change in global markets, overall demand for automation is predicted to continue to grow in 2023 and beyond, driven by growing labor shortages and changing workplace expectations.

Universal Robots has taken steps in 2022 to meet this growing demand. The company’s President, Kim Povlsen, said: “We invested last year in building world-class expertise in welding, palletizing and machine tending.
