Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool: PGMOL admits ‘important human error’ over disallowed Luis Diaz purpose

Referees’ body PGMOL has admitted the decision to disallow Luis Diaz’s goal in nine-man Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur was “a significant human error”.

At 0-0 and with the Reds a man down, Liverpool winger Diaz’s goal was ruled out following an unusually quick video assistant referee (VAR) check by Darren England, in which the customary offside line graphic was not shown.

“PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred,” the statement read. “PGMOL will conduct a full review.”

It continued: “The goal by Luiz Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene.”

BBC Sport understands the correct procedure was followed for the controversial decision but the mistake was down to human error.

The lines were drawn in accordance with normal procedure and every other aspect was checked.

However, what is…

County Championship: Warwickshire-Somerset recreation deserted after in a single day rain at Edgbaston

The draw leaves Warwickshire with a record of three home Championship games in seven games this season
LV= County Championship Division One, Edgbaston (day four)

Warwickshire (9 pts) drew with Somerset (3 pts)
Match scorecard

The longest-ever domestic English county cricket season came to an unexpectedly abrupt conclusion in Birmingham as Warwickshire and Somerset were forced to settle for a final-day draw.

Heavy overnight rain rendered any play impossible as both sides had to accept a last-day wash-out.

Although the weather was glorious in Birmingham, too much overnight rain had seeped on to an area of the outfield close to the main square.

After taking an early lunch at noon, umpires Paul Pollard and Ian Blackwell re-inspected, then took the reluctant early decision to terminate the contest.

But, in any case, there was…

Police seize gun utilized in 5 killings in Jamaica : Cayman Information Service

Police Commissioner Derek Byrne

(CNS): The RCIPS has seized a firearm in the Cayman Islands that was used in at least five murders in Jamaica, according to Police Commissioner Derek Byrne. Speaking to the local press on Wednesday, less than a week before he leaves the post, Byrne said one of the many enhancements he has presided over during the last seven years was the development of ballistics, and Cayman is now a regional hub for firearms forensics.

Since he took over the reins of the RCIPS, Byrne has presided over the most significant budgets in its history. But he told CNS that much has been done to make the service more professional, and the government has been very supportive of the security agenda.

He pointed to the development of various new departments, the acquisition of two state-of-the-art helicopters, the creation of the coastguard, dealing with the changing face of crime such as cyber scams and financial crime, the investment in dealing with child and…

Sir Alastair Prepare dinner: Essex look ahead to ex-England skipper’s resolution on attainable retirement

Alastair Cook made six in both innings against Northamptonshire in what may yet be his last knock as a first-class cricketer

Essex will wait for former England Test skipper Alastair Cook to make a decision on his future in first-class cricket following their season-closing defeat by Northamptonshire.

Media speculation in recent weeks has suggested that this will be the 38-year-old’s last season.

But Essex head coach Anthony McGrath says Cook’s mind is not made up and he may still play on into his 40th year.

“Hopefully we’ll see him for a bit longer,” McGrath told BBC Radio Essex.

“But, if not, then the service he’s given to cricket, not just Essex, has been phenomenal.”

Cook, who turns 39 in December, has made 824 County Championship runs this summer at an average of 35.82, hitting the 74th first-class century of his career, as well as six fifties.

It is now five years since Cook retired from international cricket, but McGrath says there is no sign as to whether he now wants to do the…

Derbyshire (4 pts) lead Glamorgan (3 pts) by 217 runs with 10 second-innings wickets standing
Match scorecard

An attacking declaration from Glamorgan set up the possibility of a final day run-chase with Derbyshire on 68 for nought, leading by 217.

The Welsh side called a halt on 301-5 immediately after avoiding the follow-on.

Aggressive innings from Colin Ingram (82) and Billy Root (53) steered Glamorgan to safety after a patient 65 from Zain Ul Hassan.

But the game descended into farce in the evening gloom.

Derbyshire showed few signs of going after the bowling and building their lead, until a late blast from Luis Reece and Harry Came at very occasional spinner Eddie Byrom in…

Sussex have third place in Division Two of the County Championship in their sights after reducing Gloucestershire to 113-5 in their unlikely pursuit of a target of 513 with a day to go at Hove.

James Coles made his third century of the season in Sussex’s 505-7 declared before they made inroads into the Gloucestershire top order, taking five wickets before bad light intervened with 14 overs not bowled.

It looks as if Gloucestershire will end the season without a win while Sussex could climb above Leicestershire, if the Foxes lose to champions Durham after following on.

Kent (5 pts) lead Lancashire (3 pts) by 18 runs

Joe Denly’s unbeaten century helped relegation-threatened Kent to 345-4 on day two of their County Championship match with Lancashire at Canterbury.

Replying to the visitors’ 327, Ben Compton, who was nominated to drop out had Zak Crawley been fit after England duty, anchored Kent’s innings with a typically obdurate 95.

Denly then played a more flamboyant 105 not out, from 149 balls with 11 fours and a six, to record his first red-ball century of the season as Kent closed with two potentially crucial batting points and a lead of 18.

Ben Duckett hits unbeaten century for England in opposition to Eire earlier than ODI is deserted

England 280-4 (31 overs): Duckett 107*, Salt, Crawley
Ireland: Did not bat
Match abandoned, England win the series 1-0
Scorecard

Ben Duckett made an unbeaten century but England were denied the chance to post a mammoth total against Ireland as the third one-day international was abandoned because of rain.

Duckett was 107 not out off 78 balls as England reached 280-4 off 31 overs at the County Ground before heavy rain curtailed play at 14:48 BST.

The umpires decided at 15:21 no further play would be possible.

England captain Zak Crawley and opener Phil Salt had earlier hit fifties.

The first ODI of the series at Headingley was washed out without a ball being bowled, meaning England’s 48-run win at Trent Bridge in the second match has given them a 1-0 series win.

It was a little surprising to see the match called off so abruptly, given just over half an hour had elapsed between the players going off and the decision to abandon the match.

Ben Tozer: ‘Dad was scared as a result of he knew one thing was mistaken’

Ben Tozer: Wrexham defender makes cancer check plea after father’s death

“The last time I spoke with him, the last words we said was ‘I love you’ to each other even though we didn’t know what was going to happen.”

The emotions are still evidently raw two months on as Wrexham club captain Ben Tozer talks about the loss of his father.

On a Saturday evening in late April, Keith Tozer had watched from the stands as Ben lifted the National League trophy amid jubilant scenes at the Racecourse Stadium.

Wrexham had just beaten Boreham Wood to win the title and secure promotion back to the Football League after a 15-year absence.

Defender Tozer had played every minute of the record-breaking campaign, and his father regularly made the round trip of more than 500 miles from his home in Plymouth to north Wales to watch him in action.

“He would come to the games up here and would drive up with my uncle,” Tozer said.

“He was here the day we won the league, which was amazing for me.”

An exciting and transformational time lays ahead for cricket.

A number of challenges have been highlighted by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket’s (ICEC) report and it feels like a major turning point for the game. The ambition to become one of our country’s most inclusive sports is one that sits close to my heart, and I believe is achievable.

Clearly there is work to do across the areas of race, class and gender. The game has already begun the journey and the ICEC report will accelerate meaningful change.

This is the part that really interests me. From my experience over the many years of…

England 2-1 Scotland: Lionesses maintain off fightback to win first Ladies’s Nations League sport

Manchester City’s Lauren Hemp scored three goals for England at the World Cup this summer

England held on against Scotland at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light to win their first Women’s Nations League match and begin their quest to secure qualification for TeamGB for the Olympic Games.

Headed goals from Lucy Bronze and Lauren Hemp gave the Lionesses the lead before Kirsty Hanson got one back for Scotland in first-half injury time.

Scotland were aggrieved not to have had a penalty earlier for a shove on Martha Thomas by England captain Millie Bright in the box and they hit the crossbar in the second half with a dipping volley from Hanson.
