2034 World Cup: Saudi Arabia set to host after Australia doesn’t bid

Lionel Messi’s Argentina are the current world champions

Saudi Arabia is set to host the men’s 2034 World Cup after Fifa confirmed it was the only bidder for the tournament.

Australia decided against bidding to stage the tournament hours before Fifa’s deadline for declarations of interest on Tuesday.

Morocco, Portugal and Spain are the only bidders for the 2030 edition, with games also played in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.

A Fifa congress will confirm the hosts in late 2024.

The 2026 World Cup will take place in the US, Mexico and Canada.

“Three editions, five continents and 10 countries involved in staging matches in the tournament – that’s making football truly global,” Fifa president Gianni Infantino wrote on Instagram.

“As we live in an increasingly divided and aggressive world, we show once again that football, the leading global sport, unites like nothing else.”

Australia’s governing body Football Australia says it intends to focus its efforts on hosting the Women’s Asian Cup in…

Luis Diaz: Main navy and police search underneath method for Liverpool participant’s father

Jurgen Klopp says ‘we wanted to fight’ as search continues for Luis Diaz’s father

A major military and police search is under way in Colombia for the father of Liverpool forward Luis Diaz, with the authorities offering a £40,000 reward for information leading to his rescue.

More than 120 soldiers, plus police, searched northern Colombia for Luis Manuel Diaz on Sunday, amid reports armed men had taken him and his wife.

The player’s mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was found in Barrancas on Saturday.

Diaz was absent from the Liverpool side which beat Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

The army said it had set up roadblocks and deployed two motorised platoons, unmanned aircraft, helicopters and a plane with radar in the search for his father.

The Colombian authorities have not provided details about the reported kidnapping, but local media said Diaz’s mother and father were taken by armed men on motorcycles at a gas station in Barrancas, their home town, which is in La Guajira, the country’s northern…

Low strain system may prepare dinner up an area storm : Cayman Information Service

Source: NHC

(CNS): A trough of low pressure over the eastern Caribbean Sea, which is producing disorganised showers and thunderstorms, appears conducive for gradual development this week as it heads towards our area. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the system is expected to move westward during the coming days. A tropical depression could form late this week when the system reaches the central or southwestern Caribbean Sea.

The NHC predicts a 60% chance of a storm developing within a week. The Cayman Islands National Weather Service said it was also monitoring the disturbance. While the NHC projects the system to potentially move near the eastern coast of Nicaragua by the weekend, this system could bring significant rainfall across the Cayman Islands, regardless of its development.

“The National Weather Service is closely monitoring the development of this system due to its proximity to our area as well as the forecast uncertainty of what the system will…

England 129 (34.5 overs): Livingstone 27 (46); Shami 4-22

Scorecard. Table.

England’s miserable World Cup campaign slumped further as they collapsed to a 100-run defeat by hosts India in Lucknow.

Chasing 230 on a tricky pitch, the defending champions were bowled out for 129 amid raucous home support in their latest batting capitulation.

It is their fourth defeat in succession in India and their fifth overall – the first time they have lost five times at a World Cup.

After a steady start, Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Dawid Malan and Joe Root in consecutive deliveries to ignite the crowd and spark a horrible collapse of four wickets for nine runs in 27 balls. All 10 wickets went for just 99 runs.

Ben Stokes, like Root, was out duck.

He struggled for nine balls before being bowled playing an ugly slog to Mohammed Shami, who also knocked over Jonny Bairstow for 14 via an…

Enchantment courtroom blocks JCPC bid over civil partnerships : Cayman Information Service

Kattina Anglin

(CNS): An attempt by Kattina Anglin to take the challenge against local civil partnership legislation all the way to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC) has been rejected by the Cayman Islands Court of Appeal.

Anglin’s appeal challenging the findings of an earlier judicial review over whether or not the governor has the power to pass a law paving the way for same-sex unions was been dismissed in July by the higher court. But Anglin was seeking leave to take the case to London.

In the ruling dismissing the application, the Court of Appeal said this application did not raise an arguable point of law of great general or public importance that ought to be considered by the JCPC.

“First, all the issues now raised by the Proposed Appellant have been comprehensively considered by two courts which were entirely consistent in their rulings. Their legal reasoning was orthodox and conventional,” CICA president Justice Sir John Goldring…

Johnson played 13 games for NHL side the Pittsburgh Penguins

Nottingham Panthers forward Adam Johnson has died after suffering a serious cut to his neck from a skate during Saturday’s Challenge Cup match.

The game against the Sheffield Steelers was stopped in the 35th minute as the 29-year-old American received emergency treatment from paramedics on the ice.

The Panthers said on Sunday they were “devastated” Johnson had died following a “freak accident”.

“The club will dearly miss him and will never ever forget him,” they added.

“Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great team-mate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him.

“The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time.

“Everyone at the club including players, staff, management and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam’s passing.”

Tyson Fury v Francis Ngannou: British heavyweight claims controversial cut up choice win over ex-UFC fighter

Tyson Fury had to gather himself after being knocked down by Francis Ngannou in round three

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury claimed a controversial split decision victory over former UFC fighter Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia.

Ngannou, 37, put Fury on the canvas in round three after connecting with a left hook.

But while one judge scored it 95-94 in favour of Ngannou, two gave it to Fury at 96-93 and 95-94.

Fury’s WBC heavyweight belt was not on the line.

“That definitely wasn’t in the script,” Fury told TNT Sports.

“I got caught round the back of the head [for the knockdown]. I wasn’t hurt. I got up and got back to my boxing.

“He’s an awkward man and a good puncher and I respect him a lot. He’s given me one of my toughest fights of the last 10 years.”

Ngannou, making his professional boxing debut, came out tentatively behind the jab in the opening round and Fury seemed content with a slow start as he looked to get a read on his opponent.

Fury got a first taste of Ngannou’s power in…

New Zealand 11-12 South Africa: Springboks win file fourth Rugby World Cup title

South Africa won each of their knockout games by a single point
New Zealand: (6) 11
Tries: B Barrett Pens: Mo’unga 2
South Africa: (12) 12
Pens: Pollard 4

South Africa clinched a record fourth Rugby World Cup title by doing just enough to deny 14-man New Zealand and retain their crown in a helter-skelter final in Paris.

The Springboks seemed to have control when, with Handre Pollard’s dead-eyed goalkicking having already given them a 9-3 lead, Sam Cane caught Jesse Kriel high in the 27th minute.

The New Zealand captain was shown a red card on review and another Pollard penalty left the All Blacks a man down, nine points behind and in deep trouble.

But New Zealand rallied, rode their luck and dragged themselves back into the game. Richie Mo’unga kicked a penalty before the break and Beauden Barrett scooped up a loose ball and slid in after the interval to cut South Africa’s lead to 12-11.

Both teams pushed for a decisive score in an enthralling, lactic-drenched final quarter, but neither…

Cricket World Cup 2023: England’s gamers all ‘feeling the warmth’, says Marcus Trescothick

England players are all “feeling the heat” after their poor performances at the World Cup in India, says assistant coach Marcus Trescothick.

England have lost four of their five games so far, meaning their title defence is effectively over.

They play unbeaten hosts India in Lucknow on Sunday, three days on from their defeat by Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.

“It has been miles away from what we normally expect,” former batter Trescothick told BBC Sport.

“We have not been up to what we expect and that is really disappointing.

“It is more disappointing in the team environment than anyone else.

“You have got to put your hand up and understand that criticism comes your way.”

England would still not be mathematically eliminated if they lose…

Argentina 23-26 England: England overcome Pumas to win Rugby World Cup bronze-medal match

England number eight Ben Earl scored his first try of a fine individual World Cup campaign
Argentina:(10) 23
Tries: Cubelli, Carreras Pens: Boffelli 2, Sanchez; Cons: Boffelli 2
England:(16) 26
Tries: Earl, Dan Pens: Farrell 4; Cons: Farrell 2

England completed their Rugby World Cup campaign with a victory as they narrowly overcame a proud Argentina performance in the third-place play-off in Paris.

Ben Earl slid over as England shot to an early 13-0 lead, but Argentina clawed their way back as Tomas Cubelli and Santiago Carreras’ tries helped put them within a score for the final 30 minutes.

Owen Farrell’s boot kept England’s noses just about in front as he exchanged penalties with Nicolas Sanchez in a nervy finale.

Backed by a believing crowd, Argentina launched a late assault on England’s line but Sanchez pushed a penalty to tie the scores wide, allowing Steve Borthwick’s side to finish France 2023 with a win.

After seeming set to stroll to victory early on, there was heartfelt relief…

Cricket World Cup 2023: India, England, Australia & New Zealand in motion

An intriguing weekend at the Cricket World Cup looks likely to go a long way to confirming the four semi-finalists.

Hosts India will all but seal their spot with victory over beleaguered England, while Australia can take a big stride when they meet New Zealand.

Even with defeat in Lucknow on Sunday, England’s exit will not be confirmed, but the defence of their title is as good as over.

Bangladesh also meet the Netherlands in Kolkata on Saturday (09:30 BST).

Australia, the five-time champions, have bounced back from losing their opening two games with three successive wins and sit fourth in the table, two points behind New Zealand.

The Black Caps, runners-up in the past two World Cups, have lost only to India so far.

Even with two weeks of the lengthy group stage left, it is looking likely that the current top four – South Africa, India, New Zealand and Australia – will contest the semi-finals.

A New Zealand win over their Trans-Tasman rivals in Dharamsala on Saturday (06:00 BST) will…

England’s World Cup is all but over after a shambolic eight-wicket defeat by Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.

The defending champions are not mathematically out but now must win all of their remaining games, including against unbeaten hosts India on Sunday, and hope an unlikely set of results go their way.

Attempting to respond to Saturday’s record defeat by South Africa, England’s campaign slumped into complete disarray as they were bowled out for 156.

They reached 45-0 but the wicket of Dawid Malan, caught behind off 36-year-old Angelo Mathews for 28, began a miserable slide.

Joe Root ran himself out for an nervy three, Jonny Bairstow swiped to mid-on for 30 and captain Jos Buttler was caught behind for eight playing a flashing drive.

Cricket World Cup 2023: England’s event over and it has been a multitude from the very begin

As England’s World Cup slumped to a new low, huge birds of prey circled overhead in Bengaluru.

Perhaps they too saw what the rest of us could.

England’s World Cup defence was dying and, like Sri Lanka, they were ready to go in for the kill.

This situation is not new to England fans.

Their Test team of the early 2010s, first captained by Andrew Strauss and taken on by Alastair Cook, was the best team in the world, but fell apart in the space of one Ashes tour in 2013-14.

This white-ball outfit was a similarly great team – one that became the first men’s side to hold both the 50-over and T20 World Cups – but now also lies in ruin.

These things take years to build, only to unexpectedly fall apart in front of our eyes before we can quite comprehend why.

And why, is the question English cricket will now be tasked with answering.

Yes, the schedule has left them underprepared.

Eoin Morgan’s England achieved 50-over glory in 2019 after four years of meticulous planning.

Then they had 88 matches of…

(CNS): The Cayman Islands Parliament is going through benchmark assessment this week with two representatives from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. Sir Bobby Charlton: Emotional scenes as Outdated Trafford honours Manchester United icon

A wreath was placed on Sir Bobby’s seat in the directors’ box at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s players wore black armbands while there was a minute’s silence before the Champions League game with FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford in honour of legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

On an emotional night, a wreath was placed on Sir Bobby’s seat in the directors’ box as United played at home for the first time since his passing.

United boss Erik ten Hag, led by a lone piper, laid a wreath on the pitch.

Charlton was also remembered on the cover the match programme.

Before kick-off, two black and white images of the England 1966 World Cup winner looked down from the glass fronted main entrance at Old Trafford next to the words ‘Sir Bobby Charlton 1937-2023 Forever Loved’.

Many United fans, who were advised to arrive early for 20:00 BST kick-off, laid floral tributes outside the ground.

Olympiakos v Panathinaikos: Juankar taken to hospital after being hit by firecracker in deserted derby

Juankar has made 10 appearances for Panathinaikos this season

Panathinaikos say defender Juankar was “taken to hospital for tests” after being hit by a firecracker during the club’s Greek Superleague match at Olympiakos on Sunday.

The Spanish substitute collapsed on the edge of the field after being struck while warming up before being carried off on a stretcher.

The match was called off afterwards with the score 1-1 after 50 minutes.

Panathinaikos say the result of the game will be “decided in the courts”.

Juankar, 33, who plays primarily at left-back, has made 109 appearances for the Greens since signing from Malaga in 2020.

The Athens derby, referred to as the derby of the eternal enemies, has been marred by ugly scenes in the past, with a 2019 match between the rivals abandoned when fans fought with riot police.

Joe Root, Harry Brook and Mark Wooden signal three-year offers as England announce multi-year contracts

Joe Root, Harry Brook and Mark Wood have signed the longest deals

Joe Root, Harry Brook and Mark Wood have signed three-year deals as England begin awarding multi-year central contracts for the first time.

Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow have agreed two-year deals, but Test captain Ben Stokes and veteran bowler James Anderson have only signed for one year.

Fast bowler Jofra Archer, despite his injury issues, and spinner Adil Rashid, 35, are among those on two-year deals.

Multi-year deals are seen as a way to resist interest from franchise leagues.

“We are rewarding those players who we expect to make a significant impact over the coming years playing for England,” said Rob Key, managing director of England men’s cricket.

Cricket World Cup 2023: Joe Root says England’s gamers have to play extra 50-over cricket

England need to play more domestic and international 50-over cricket to keep competing at World Cups, says Joe Root.

Holders England, who are facing an early exit in India, played 42 one-day internationals in the build up to the 2023 World Cup, compared to 88 in the run up to their 2019 win.

English cricket’s domestic 50-over competition takes place at the same time as The Hundred.

Root said more ODIs since 2019 would have “benefitted” England in India.

“I don’t think we can use it as an excuse,” added the batter and former Test captain.

“We’re an experienced group of players that have played a lot together in the format.

“But it would have been nice to have a proper run in naturally and not just a rushed block of eight to 10 games or whatever.”

After three defeats in four games at the start of their World Cup defence, England will likely need to win all five of their remaining group matches to qualify for the semi-finals.

Their preparation for the tournament was a four-match series at…
