Activists suggest cheaper, greener route for EWA : Cayman Information Service

(CNS): The route chosen by the government and the National Roads Authority for the controversial East-West Arterial Road from Newlands to North Side is not the only one available. Local environmental campaigners, Sustainable Cayman, have in partnership with the UK’s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds issued an assessment of route options for the highway and finding one that is “cheaper, shorter and safer” the authors have said. Their proposed re-route is also environmentally friendly as it avoids cutting through the central mangrove wetlands and the associated flood risks.

The activists are urging the public to read the short, clear report, contact their MPs and lobby them for what they argue is a much better option than the one government is currently pursuing. The work was partially funded by the RSPB which has a particular interest in the issue because of the migratory, as well as nesting, bird habitat that will be put at risk by the…

Shane Dowrich: West Indies wicketkeeper retires 10 days after shock recall for England sequence

Shane Dowrich last played for West Indies in any format in 2020

West Indies wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich has retired from international cricket just 10 days after a surprise call-up to their one-day squad.

Dowrich, 32, was named in a 15-man squad for December’s three-match ODI series against England on 20 November.

He had won only one ODI cap and last represented West Indies in a Test against New Zealand in 2020.

“We want to thank Shane for his contribution,” said Cricket West Indies (CWI) director Miles Bascombe.

“He is a disciplined, hard-working cricketer who always gave his utmost in front and behind the stumps.

“We respect his decision to retire and appreciate it is not an easy one to make. We wish him all the best as he steps away from the international stage.”

Dowrich made his sole ODI appearance in 2019, though did play 35 Tests for West Indies from 2015 to 2020. He hit 1,570 runs in Tests at an average of 29.07, with three centuries.

He had been called up following a strong 2023-24…

Uganda qualify for Males’s T20 World Cup for first time

Uganda beat Zimbabwe, who have played at six of the eight previous editions of the Men’s T20 World Cup, en route to qualification for the 2024 tournament

Uganda qualified for the Men’s T20 World Cup for the first time with a nine-wicket victory over Rwanda in African qualifying.

The win meant the Cricket Cranes, ranked 23rd in the world, clinched second place in the six-team tournament in Windhoek, Namibia.

Uganda will join Namibia at the 20-team finals in the United States and the West Indies next year after the Eagles qualified with a game to spare on Tuesday.

“It is pretty surreal,” captain Brian Masaba said.

“I can’t put words to the emotions we are feeling now as a team. It’s massive for Ugandan cricket and huge for African cricket, especially, for a country like Uganda to make it to the World Cup.”

Having opened with a win over Tanzania and then a defeat by Namibia, Uganda upset Zimbabwe in their third game on Sunday, winning by five wickets in their first T20 International against…

Local weather Change: ECB indicators as much as UN’s Sports activities for Local weather Motion Framework

Worcestershire’s New Road home floods regularly, and the ECB says 40% of its cricket grounds are at risk of flooding or drought

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has pledged to cut emissions by half by 2030, and to reach net zero for greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

The targets form part of the governing body’s sustainability plan for cricket, which includes the ECB signing up to the UN’s Sports for Climate Action Framework.

The ECB also wants to eliminate single-use plastic at all venues by 2025, end landfill waste by 2035 and encourage players, supporters and clubs to reuse rather than dispose.

Gloucestershire, Surrey and Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) are already committed to the UN’s Sports for Climate Action plan.

County cricket fixtures: Schedule prioritises cash over participant welfare – PCA

Gloucestershire’s David Payne has played one one-day international for England

The Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) has called on the English game to make future changes to an “unrelenting” county schedule.

In the 2024 fixtures, there are a number of periods of congestion, particularly around the T20 Blast.

The PCA says this leads to “dangerous travel windows”, along with issues over physical and mental health.

“There is a feeling the game is prioritising commercial revenue over player welfare,” said the PCA.

In the schedule for the new season, announced on Thursday, counties will play the same amount of cricket as 2023 – at least 14 Championship matches, 14 in the Blast and eight in the One-Day Cup. Fixtures for The Hundred will also be announced in the new year.

However, the majority of Blast matches will be played between Thursdays and Sundays, meaning counties will often play matches on successive days, or three games in four days.

“There are many occasions on a T20 night…

Sussex CCC: Ali Orr’s transfer to Hampshire criticised by ex-captain Chris Adams

Chris Adams (centre with trophy) captained Sussex to the 2003 County Championship title

Former Sussex captain Chris Adams has described the club’s release of Ali Orr to Hampshire as “reckless” at best and “unforgivable” at worst.

Orr, 22, had one year left to run on his contract at Hove.

Adams and Ian Gould, both ex-Sussex players, resigned from their backroom positions at the county on Monday saying Orr’s departure played a part.

“What messages does that send to the rest of the squad and the membership?” Adams told BBC Radio Sussex.

“What message does it send to the other 17 counties? That we are prepared to release our young, developing, incredibly well thought of talent – where does that stop?

“At best it’s a reckless decision and at worst it’s unforgivable.”

Adams captained Sussex to the County Championship title in 2003 and also held the cricket manager role at Surrey prior to Alec Stewart.

He returned to Hove last year as a special advisor to the cricket committee on which Gould,…

County Championship 2024: Champions Surrey to start out season in opposition to Lancashire

Surrey finished 20 points clear of runners-up Essex after the final round of fixtures to claim the title for the second straight season

Surrey have been handed a testing trip to Old Trafford to begin their quest for a third County Championship crown in a row.

For the second straight season Lancashire will host the defending champions in the opening round of Division One fixtures which begin on Friday, 5 April.

The sides played out a rain-affected draw to start the 2023 season but the Red Rose county won handsomely at The Oval in June.

No side has claimed three straight County Championship titles since Yorkshire in 1968 while Surrey won seven consecutive crowns between 1952-1958.

Manchester Metropolis v Liverpool: Banner asking for launch of activist in UAE flown over stadium

The banner flown over the Etihad Stadium by a light aircraft said: ‘UAE: Free Ahmed Mansoor’

A banner requesting the release of a prominent activist in the United Arab Emirates was flown over Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium during their Premier League match with Liverpool.

The banner – which read ‘UAE: Free Ahmed Mansoor’ – was organised by human rights group Amnesty International.

Mansoor was jailed for 10 years in 2018 for “defaming” the country.

City owner Sheikh Mansour is the UAE’s vice-president, deputy prime minister and part of the Emirati royal family.

The light aircraft towing the banner circled the ground for approximately 20 minutes after kick-off on Saturday.

In 2011, Mansoor was one of five activists arrested after calling for political or economic reforms. All were later pardoned by authorities.

Four years later, Mansoor received the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders for what was cited as his work in raising concerns about arbitrary detention, torture and…

Davis Cup Finals 2023: Novak Djokovic seals Serbia’s win over Nice Britain

Jack Draper was playing only his second Davis Cup match for Great Britain

Great Britain are out of the Davis Cup after Cameron Norrie was unable to inflict a rare defeat on Novak Djokovic to keep alive their semi-final hopes.

Britain’s Jack Draper lost 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (8-6) to Miomir Kecmanovic in the opening match of the best-of-three tie.

That result meant Norrie had to beat 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic for the first time in his career.

But Djokovic showed his class as he cruised to a 6-4 6-4 win and set Serbia up for a semi-final against Italy.

“It’s difficult knowing that Cam has to go and play Djokovic after, and that’s seemingly a must-win match for me,” Draper, 21, said.

“I back Cam but it’s definitely a tough challenge to go out there knowing that there is a lot more pressure on me to win the match.

“That’s the kind of pressure that if I want to be a top player, I have to cope with and perform under. It’s tough not to get the win today.”

Incapacity Premier League: Kevin Baker on dwelling with a stoma and enjoying cricket

Kevin Baker keeping wicket for the Hawks in the Disability Premier League

When Kevin Baker helped the Hawks win the ECB Disability Cricket Premier League in Derby this summer, it completed an inspiring journey that started with him almost losing his life.

Rewind to June 2015 and Baker, who is now 52 and has been playing first-team cricket since he was 13, was fulfilling a long-held ambition of playing Birmingham League cricket with Penkridge Cricket Club when his time there was cut unexpectedly short.

The Shropshire-based cricketer had been living with ulcerative colitis for two decades, a long-term inflammatory condition of the bowel.

Flare-ups forcing him in and out of hospital weren’t unusual, but that summer saw the most serious flare-up yet.

He was admitted to hospital for an ileostomy operation (to get a stoma) which soon led to a second and third due to sepsis caused by his bowel bursting.

CIG seeks shift in driving tradition to finish street deaths : Cayman Information Service

Emergency services at scene of a crash

(CNS): With tens of thousands of cars being imported into the islands every year and a rapidly growing population driving around on an inadequate network, Cayman’s roads have become increasingly dangerous. As a result the government has launched a National Road Safety Strategy with the aim of eliminating serious crashes within the next 15 years. So far this year nine people have been killed on the roads and police are reporting an average of more than 60 collisions every week.

Road fatalities and serious injuries are as a result of a significant number of factors from the volume of traffic on local roads to the number of drivers from many different countries where standards, road rules and layouts all differ significantly.

The campaign ‘Safe Roads, Safe Cayman, The Road to Zero’ is a cross-government project led by the infrastructure ministry of Planning in partnership with the police, the National Roads Authority (NRA),…

What are Nationwide Insurance coverage and revenue tax and the way a lot will I pay?

A National Insurance cut for millions of workers is expected when Chancellor Jeremy Hunt makes his Autumn Statement on Wednesday.

However, previously announced changes to National Insurance (NI) and income tax mean millions of people will pay more tax.

What is National Insurance and how could it change?

NI is the second biggest source of money for the government, and applies across the whole of the UK.

For employees, it is similar to income tax in many ways. A fixed percentage of the money you earn is deducted from wages.

You do not pay NI on the first £12,571 you earn a year. It is then charged at 12% on earnings up to £50,271, and 2% on income above that.

Self-employed people pay 9% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% on profits above that.

NI is not paid by people over state pension age even if they are still working.

Employers also have to pay NI contributions.

At this stage, it is not totally clear how much of a reduction Mr Hunt will reveal,…

Transgender ladies banned from enjoying worldwide ladies’s cricket by ICC

Canada’s Danielle McGahey was the first transgender cricketer to play an international match

Transgender women have been barred from playing in international women’s matches under new regulations from the International Cricket Council.

Any player who has gone through male puberty will not be eligible for women’s internationals regardless of any surgery or treatment undertaken.

In September, Canada’s Danielle McGahey became the first transgender cricketer to play an international game.

The new regulations will be reviewed within two years, the ICC said.

Following a nine-month consultation process, the governing body said its new policy, which takes effect immediately, was based on “protection of the integrity of the women’s game, safety, fairness and inclusion”.

“The changes to the gender eligibility regulations resulted from an extensive consultation process and is founded in science and aligned with the core principles developed during the review,” said ICC chief executive Geoff…

T20 World Cup: Rwanda eye qualification after storied run to remaining qualifier

Cricket is now becoming one of the most important sports in Rwanda

Rwanda captain Clinton Rubagumya distinctly remembers the bellows from a previous national team coach as the country’s best cricketers repeatedly turned their head in the opposite direction during fielding practice.

“Why aren’t you looking at the ball?” the coach demanded. “But for us to survive, we had to play this type of way,” says Rubagumya.

Experience had necessitated a raft of idiosyncrasies upon Rwanda’s players.

Growing up only able to play cricket on dirt football pitches, a number of them had lost their front teeth courtesy of a ball hitting a rough patch and ricocheting dangerously upwards.

“So you learned to collect it with your face looking away,” explains Rubagumya.

He still remembers his first thought upon arriving for a match in South Africa a few years ago – his debut game outside of Rwanda: “This is a carpet! How can you get injured here?”

Few roads in qualification for the 2024 T20 World Cup have been as…

Cricket World Cup 2023: Problem to breathe life into ODI format stays

Ultimately, the World Cup ended how it began, with a sense of emptiness inside the biggest cricket stadium on the planet.

On 5 October it was because New Zealand whipping England in the opening match was not a big enough draw to fill the 132,000 seats in Ahmedabad. On Sunday, it was the silence that greeted every Australian boundary, the noise coming from plastic seats snapping back into place as heartbroken India fans headed for the exits.

When this tournament started, HS2 had only just been scrapped, the Rugby World Cup was still in its group stage and Travis Head was at home with a broken hand.

If a 45-day lap of honour around India was meant to culminate with a coronation in the final, then it was the real kings that took the crown. Australia stretched their record with a sixth World Cup success. The best of all time comfortably defeated the best team in the competition.

A six-wicket win over the host nation, completed with seven overs to spare, was one of the greatest…

Cricket World Cup: Pat Cummins delivers once more as Australia spoil India’s celebration in Ahmedabad

The evening before his Australia side completed the ultimate heist to stun India and win the World Cup title, captain Pat Cummins was playing Call of Duty in the team’s Ahmedabad hotel.

He lasted only 30 minutes before leaving his team-mates to play into the night.

In truth, it is he who answered the call of duty.

He is the 30-year-old who became captain by accident, given the role when Tim Paine had to quit after a sex scandal.

So hurried was his appointment, he revised his fielding positions the night before his first Test as captain.

But now the man with the business degree, the calm, well-mannered captain, has made winning his business. Cummins now stands alongside the greatest Australian leaders of all.

Australia sides have scaled many heights but Cummins’ six-month run including the World Test Championship crown, an Ashes retained in England and a sixth World Cup title for his country, won in a final against the hosts and previously unstoppable India, runs anything before it…

ATP Finals 2023 outcomes: Novak Djokovic beats Jannik Sinner to win title

Novak Djokovic (right) had lost to Jannik Sinner (left) in the group phase but avenged that in the final

Novak Djokovic won a record seventh ATP Finals title with a dominant victory over Jannik Sinner that marked another milestone in his memorable season.

The Serb, 36, who lost to the Italian in the group stage, avenged that with a 6-3 6-3 win in Turin, Italy.

He has set records in rankings and titles this year and played some of his best tennis against the youngsters – like Sinner – trying to challenge him.

The world number one had been tied with Roger Federer on six ATP Finals wins.

But it was clear from the outset in Sunday’s final that he was hungry to take the outright record, establishing control with an early break and dropping just two points on his serve in an almost flawless display to take the opening set.

A break to love in the opening game of the second set put Djokovic further ahead and made Sinner’s dream of becoming the event’s first Italian champion in front of a noisy…

UK physician Ahmed Sabra’s aid at return to Swansea after Gaza plight

He is a consultant cardiologist at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, West Yorkshire who was a cardiology registrar at Morriston Hospital, Swansea.

He said it was difficult to survive because of the lack of food and water, and shelter was scarce.

“There was no electricity or water, I had two or three showers in six weeks, and we used fire to cook because there was no gas or electricity.”

His plight follows Israel’s major military campaign in the Gaza, with the aim of eliminating Hamas

It is in retaliation for the 7 October cross-border attack by Hamas gunmen which killed 1,200 people, and took an estimated 240 people hostage.

The Hamas-run health ministry said the death roll in Gaza has reached 12,300 people following Israel’s counter-attack, with more than 2,000 people feared to be buried under the rubble.

To escape the fighting Dr Sabra’s family travelled to the Rafah crossing, and his wife and children crossed into Egypt.

But he was turned away because his name was left off a list…

Everton obtain instant 10-point Premier League deduction

Everton dropped into the relegation places with their points deduction

Everton have received an immediate 10-point deduction after being found to have breached the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

The punishment is the biggest sporting sanction in the competition’s history and leaves Everton 19th in the table on a new total of four points.

The club said it was “both shocked and disappointed” by the “wholly disproportionate and unjust” ruling.

Everton have said they intend to appeal against the decision.

The Premier League referred Everton to an independent commission in March but did not reveal the specifics of the club’s alleged breach.

Everton posted financial losses for the fifth successive year in March after reporting a £44.7m deficit in 2021-22.

Premier League clubs are permitted to lose £105m over a three-year period and Everton admitted to being in breach of the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) for the period ending 2021-22.

Following a five-day hearing in…

Adam Johnson memorial sport: Tributes paid to late Nottingham Panthers participant

Players held their sticks aloft and tapped them on the ice before face-off

Ice hockey players and fans have paid tribute to the late Adam Johnson at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena.

The 29-year-old American died after his neck was cut by a skate while playing for Nottingham Panthers away to Sheffield Steelers on 28 October.

That game was abandoned and the Panthers played their first game since the incident on Saturday.

A sell-out crowd gathered for the Adam Johnson Memorial Game, with Manchester Storm providing the opposition.

Fans continued to lay flowers and offerings in tribute outside the arena for Johnson, who had a spell with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL and joined the Panthers in August, before the 2023-24 season.

The crowd of about 10,000 chanted Johnson’s name as the players took to the ice. The players then gathered in the centre and as the arena lights faded, a picture of Johnson was displayed on the main scoreboard above the rink.

During the pre-game ceremony, there was…

ATP Finals: Jannik Sinner beats Daniil Medvedev to arrange Turin title shot

Jannik Sinner sits fourth in the ATP Tour world rankings

Jannik Sinner became the first Italian to reach the final of the ATP Finals by taking a gutsy 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 victory over Daniil Medvedev.

Sinner, 22, was fired up by the home support in Turin and saw off the Russian in two hours and 29 minutes.

He will face Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz, who meet in their semi-final on Saturday evening, in Sunday’s final.

“It is a privilege to have this kind of pressure. The crowd has given me so much energy,” Sinner said.

“It is an incredible feeling because it was a really tough match. I am happy to be in the final.”

World number four Sinner’s victory was his third straight success against Medvedev, having lost the previous six encounters between the pair.

Sinner held a crucial service game early in the first set to make it 1-1, before backing that up with a break before going on to clinch the set.

The second set was much tighter as Sinner saved the only break point opportunity, only to…
