Galatasaray v Fenerbahce: Turkish Tremendous Cup closing in Saudi Arabia postponed

The match at Al-Awwal Stadium was called off after the scheduled kick-off time

The Turkish Super Cup final between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce in Saudi Arabia was postponed because of a disagreement between the clubs and the host nation’s authorities.

The match was scheduled to kick off at 17.45 GMT but, with thousands of fans inside Riyadh’s Al-Awwal Stadium, it was called off at 19:00.

The Turkish Football Federation and the clubs blamed “problems in organising” the match after authorities refused banners referring to the revered father of modern Turkey Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Galatasaray and Fenerbahce were expected to arrive for the showpiece between Turkey’s league champions and cup winners with banners bearing Ataturk’s words “Peace at home, peace in the world”, which the Saudi authorities would not allow.

The players were also not allowed on to the pitch wearing T-shirts bearing Ataturk’s image.

Ataturk launched a programme of revolutionary social and political reform to modernise…

Sushi with Schumacher: Ex-F1 chef on catering for sport’s massive names

Former F1 chef Dave Freeman pours champagne over Jenson Button following his World Championship win in 2009

Any chef will tell you it is an extremely stressful job, so imagine catering for some of the biggest names in sport and taking your kitchen to a different country nearly every week.

For about 20 years, that was the life of Dave Freeman, an ex-Formula 1 chef who now owns a golf course in Norfolk.

During his distinguished career, he looked after the culinary needs of some of the world’s top drivers, working for Tyrrell, Jordan, BAR, Force India, Brawn, McLaren, Red Bull and Toro Rosso.

Dave, 59, served for 13 years in the Army – good training, he says, “because you’ve got to think on your feet”.

But promotion took him away from his job as a general chef, and by around 1997 he was no longer enjoying Army life.

“My brother’s friend catered for the Williams-Renault factory so he needed chefs to come and help,” he remembers.

Virat Kohli’s defiant 76 failed to save India from being thrashed by an innings and 32 runs by South Africa in the first Test at Centurion.

India lost seven second-innings wickets in the evening session as they were bowled out for just 131 in 34.1 overs.

Kohli and Shubman Gill (26) were the only India batters into double figures as Nandre Burger (4-33) and Marco Jansen (3-36) did the damage.

The second and final Test starts on 3 January at Newlands in Cape Town.

India captain Rohit Sharma said his side’s performance after a defeat inside three days was “not good enough” and they “failed” to “come together collectively”.

Winter at Wimbledon – Contained in the Slam that by no means sleeps

A view through yellowing foilage to the side of Court One where the big screen has been taken down

Sign up for notifications to the latest Insight features via the BBC Sport app and find the most recent in the series.

Today, it is just Little Nicky on The Hill.

In seven months or so, it will be teeming with spectators, sunbathing, sipping and soaking up Wimbledon’s atmosphere and giant-screen action.

But now, as autumn turns towards winter, they are gone. The screen is too. And Little Nicky – as the All England Club groundstaff have dubbed their small GPS-guided robotic mower – is alone, trundling up and down the slope, trimming back any new growth.

Centre Court seats covered in seat covers on a damp day at Wimbledon

Little Nicky is not the only difference. Wimbledon has one of sport and summer’s most recognisable palettes; sun-bleached whites, electric blue skies, two-tone lawn green and the occasional pop of scarlet strawberry.

In the drizzle and gloom, with the courts stripped back to bare postage stamps of turf and the seats hooded in tarpaulin, it is a more muted colour scheme. Ivy, that blends into the background in the summer, takes centre…

Anesu Mushangwe: How Adelaide Strikers spinner used lemons to turn into a cricket star

Anesu Mushangwe (right) helped Adelaide Strikers to become back-to-back Women’s Big Bash League winners in December

Anesu Mushangwe is used to encountering obstacles.

On her way to becoming the first Zimbabwean to win the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia, the bowler overcame a tough upbringing, missed her first opportunity to tour because she could not afford a passport and found herself out of contention for selection for years because of a lack of paperwork.

So the absence of a cricket ball was never likely to stop her from blossoming.

As a 14-year-old, Mushangwe had skipped athletics lessons in the Zimbabwean town of Chitungwiza to pursue her love of the sport.

Some of her earliest casual sessions involved sitting on a veranda with a friend who could not walk, learning from scratch how to catch and throw with skill.

“He would show me what to do and how to do things,” leg-spinner Mushangwe, now 27, told Stumped on the BBC World Service.

“We were using lemons because we didn’t have…

Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa: Rasmus Hojlund fires United to comeback win over Villa

Rasmus Hojlund joined Manchester United for £64m last summer, a fee which could rise to £72m with add-ons

Rasmus Hojlund scored his first Premier League goal as Manchester United fought back from two goals down to record a sensational victory in a thrilling Boxing Day encounter with Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

In United’s first game since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25% purchase of the club, and with future director and current Ineos head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford in the directors’ box, Erik ten Hag’s side produced one of those ‘back-from-the-dead’ endings for which they are so famed.

After John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker had given Villa a deserved half-time advantage, United rallied after the interval and refused to let their heads drop even after Alejandro Garnacho had a goal disallowed by VAR for a marginal offside decision.

It was the 19-year-old Argentine who led the fightback, scoring twice in a game for the first time in his career to turn the game on its head.

Sam Allison: Why has it taken 15 years for one more black Premier League ref?

Sam Allison was promoted to the Football League in 2020 and was moved up to the Championship earlier this year

On 26 December, Sam Allison will become the first black referee to take charge of a Premier League match in 15 years as Sheffield United face Luton Town.

For semi-professional referee Ashley Hickson-Lovence, the appointment is “tinged with a bit of sadness” as he feels it is something that “should be happening more regularly”.

“I think it’s a huge achievement, but there’s still a long way to go,” Hickson-Lovence tells BBC Sport.

Former firefighter Allison, 42, was appointed to the fixture by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), which has set itself targets of increasing the diversity of match officials across the footballing pyramid.

The governing body wants an increase of 1,000 women referees and 1,000 black or Asian referees at all levels of football in three years.

Allison’s appointment is the first step towards their goal – but why has it taken 15 years?

Manchester United: Sir Jim Ratcliffe agrees deal to purchase 25% stake for about £1.25bn

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s deal is expected to see significant funds used to upgrade the club’s training ground and Old Trafford stadium

British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe has agreed to buy a 25% stake worth about £1.25bn in Manchester United.

As part of the deal, Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group will take control of the club’s football operations.

Ratcliffe, 71, will also provide $300m (£236m) for future investment into the club’s Old Trafford stadium.

The announcement comes 13 months after the club’s owners, the Glazer family, stated they were considering selling to “explore strategic alternatives”.

The American family bought the club for £790m in 2005.

The only other publicly declared bidder, Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, withdrew his offer to buy 100% of the club in October.

United have struggled on the pitch this season and have not won the Premier League since 2013, while there have been regular protests against the Glazer ownership.

European Tremendous League: Followers and golf equipment may be satisfied to again new plans, says organiser

We won’t stop ESL, but football is not for sale

Fans and clubs can be convinced to back new plans for a breakaway European competition, says the head of the organisation behind the new proposal.

In 2021, 12 teams signed up to the breakaway European Super League (ESL) designed to rival Uefa competitions.

On Thursday, the European Court of Justice ruled that banning clubs from joining the league was unlawful and the revamped ESL was outlined hours later.

However, Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin mocked the new proposals.

Speaking in a news conference on Thursday, Ceferin said “football is not for sale” and that he looked forward to watching a two-team tournament.

“We will not try to stop them. They can create whatever they want,” he added.

The new proposal – put forward by A22, the organisation which backed the o riginal ESL – is for a league system which would include 64 men’s clubs and 32 women’s clubs.

A22 chief executive Bernd Reichart told BBC Sport the proposals had “evolved” from…

Tom Curran: Sydney Sixers and England all-rounder’s enchantment towards BBL ban dismissed

Tom Curran joined the Sydney Sixers in 2018

England and Sydney Sixers all-rounder Tom Curran has lost his appeal against a four-match ban for intimidating an umpire in Australia’s Big Bash League.

The 28-year-old was charged over an incident on 11 December before a game against Hobart Hurricanes.

Cricket Australia (CA) found that Curran was involved in a disagreement with an umpire during the warm-up.

“Umpires are part of the lifeblood of cricket,” said Alistair Dobson, CA’s BBL general manager.

“It is essential they are respected and appreciated by players at all levels of the game.

“We acknowledge the remorse Tom’s shown following the appeal and look forward to seeing him back in Sixers colours.

“Tom has been a long-time contributor to the BBL and is a clear fan-favourite and someone we hope will continue to play an integral role in the competition moving forward.”

Electrical vehicles: Caernarfon has no charging factors at Christmas

But as in the case of Caernarfon – the statistics only tell part of the story.

Gwynedd as a county sits in the top five places for charging points in Wales – at 124 per 100,000 – well above the likes of Birmingham (44 charging spots per 100,000) or Manchester (just 33 per 100,000 in the city itself).

But of 145 actual charging points stretching across the two Senedd seats that make up Gwynedd – Arfon and Dwyfor Meirionydd – just 39 are in the Arfon constituency, which includes Caernarfon and the university city of Bangor.

Bangor itself fairs relatively poorly – with just one fast charger available on a retail park for the entire city.

And again, at one major supermarket chain in the city, its charging points have not worked for well over a year.

The local authority, Cyngor Gwynedd, has pledged to improve the public charging position – with so much of its geography geared towards tourism and the visitor economy, including much of the Eryri national park, also known as Snowdonia.

Usman Khawaja scored 41 and 90 as Australia won the first Test by 360 runs

Australia opener Usman Khawaja has been charged by the International Cricket Council for wearing a black armband in support of civilians in Gaza during the first Test against Pakistan.

Playing: Premier League and different sporting our bodies urged to chop pitchside betting adverts

A pitchside betting advert at Fulham’s Craven Cottage

The Premier League and other sports governing bodies “should commit to cutting the volume” of gambling adverts on pitchside hoardings in stadiums, says an influential group of MPs.

In a new report, the Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) Committee said a reduction was needed “to shield children from exposure” to betting companies’ logos.

The parliamentary group’s chair, Dame Caroline Dinenage, said that “more should be done…[over] what often seems like a bombardment of advertising branding at football and other sporting events”.

During the 2022-23 season, eight Premier League clubs had gambling companies on the front of their shirts, in deals worth an estimated £60m per year.

In April 2023, Premier League clubs reached a groundbreaking agreement to withdraw gambling sponsorships on the front of match shirts by the end of the 2025-26 season.

While welcoming the move, the cross-party committee warns that this will “not significantly…
