India v England: Ben Foakes says vacationers can take care of ‘excessive spin’

Ben Foakes stumped Mohammad Siraj to seal England’s win in the first Test in Hyderabad

Wicketkeeper Ben Foakes says England can deal with “extreme spin” if the rest of the series in India is played on pitches offering excessive turn.

They were in the same position three years ago, only to lose the next three Tests on pitches that turned sharply.

“Quite a few of the lads have a gameplan that will do well on those pitches,” said Surrey gloveman Foakes.

England’s win in the first Test was only India’s fourth defeat in 47 home matches.

On a pitch that turned, but rarely dramatically, the tourists overturned a 190-run first-innings deficit thanks mainly to Ollie Pope’s epic 196 and 7-62 by debutant spinner Tom Hartley.

In 2021, England comfortably defeated India in the first Test on an incredibly flat pitch in Chennai.

With vastly different surfaces prepared for the remainder of the series, England struggled against India’s spinners and did not manage a total above 205 in any of the last three…

Andy Murray: Three-time Grand Slam champion says he’s in a ‘horrible second’ however ‘will not stop’

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray says he “won’t quit” tennis despite being in a “terrible moment”.

The Briton, 36, is winless in 2024 after Monday’s first-round loss to Benoit Paire at the Open Sud de France.

Murray also suffered a first-round exit at the Australian Open, while his last ATP Tour victory was in October.

On Tuesday, he responded to a BBC reporter’s post on X, which asked when Murray should “call time on an extraordinary career”.

The post linked to an article which said while the Scot’s status as a legend was secure “at what point does bravely soldiering on start to damage his legacy?”

“Tarnishing my legacy? Do me a favour,” two-time Wimbledon champion Murray wrote in reply.

“I’m in a terrible moment right now, I’ll give you that.

“Most people would quit and give up in my situation right now. But I’m not most people and my mind works differently.

“I won’t quit. I will keep fighting and working to produce the performances I know I’m capable of.”

The article asked…

India v England: Tom Hartley hopes for ‘respect’ after match-winning haul

Tom Harley (left) took 7-62 against India – the best figures by an England spinner on debut for 91 years.

Spinner Tom Hartley hopes to have “respect on my name” after bowling England to an incredible victory in the first Test against India in Hyderabad.

Left-armer Hartley, 24, had his first delivery in Test cricket belted for six by India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal.

But Hartley’s 7-62, the best haul by an England spinner on debut since 1933, inspired their 28-run win on day four.

“I felt ready for it,” Hartley told BBC Sport. “I know my ability on spinning wickets. I knew I could do well.”

Lancashire’s Hartley was a left-field call-up for the tour of India, having previously played only 20 first-class matches.

England believed he had the attributes to be successful on Indian pitches, especially given his height.

He was presented his cap by former England and Lancashire opener Michael Atherton before play in Hyderabad.

Hartley made 23 with the bat on the first day, including hitting a six,…

Manchester United say Marcus Rashford ‘disciplinary matter closed’

‘He can’t waste his talent’ – Shearer on Rashford

Manchester United say forward Marcus Rashford “has taken responsibility for his actions” after reports he was seen in nightspots in Northern Ireland on Wednesday and Thursday evening.

A United statement read: “This has been dealt with as an internal disciplinary matter, which is now closed.”

Rashford is back in training.

The 26-year-old will be available for selection for United’s Premier League trip to Wolves on Thursday.

“He reported ill. The rest is an internal matter and I will deal with that,” said boss Erik ten Hag after Sunday’s win in Wales.

Rashford trained at Carrington that day.

Ten Hag, football director John Murtough and interim chief executive Patrick Stewart dealt with the issue. Rashford was at United’s training ground on Monday with brother Dwaine, who is part of his representative team.

This is not the first time Rashford has been in trouble with the club this season.

He was dropped from the starting line-up for their…

Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and the sport that modified the whole lot

Pep Guardiola in the Barcelona dugout
In four years at Barcelona, Pep Guardiola won 14 trophies, including three La Liga, two Champions League and two Copa del Rey titles

A decision in time sends history down two very different tracks.

In 1998, a Hollywood film starring Gwyneth Paltrow catapulted the term ‘Sliding Doors’ into popular lexicon.

Ten years later, football had its own Sliding Doors moment.

In the summer of 2008, Barcelona – managed by Frank Rijkaard – were a club stalled and set to fall.

A second trophyless season in succession had ended with Barca third in La Liga and suffering ignominy at the Bernabeu.

With Real Madrid confirmed as champions in the days before, Barcelona had to give their arch-rivals a guard of honour on to the pitch before their league meeting.

Barcelona’s 4-1 humiliation at the Bernabeu in May 2008 was followed by manager Frank Rijkaard leaving the club less than 24 hours later

The embarrassment didn’t stop there. A 4-1 thrashing followed, with the Madrid fans chanting “Laporta please stay!”…

Minister says amended legislation will assist monetary sector : Cayman Information Service

Financial Services Minister André Ebanks

(CNS): Financial Services Minister AndrĂ© Ebanks has said that one of the bills he will be presenting to parliament next month will enhance the local financial services sector “in the face of changing market dynamics”. According to a release from his ministry, the Companies (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which was gazetted last week, will enhance Cayman’s product offerings by introducing innovative commercial changes, including a new procedure for reducing share capital in certain circumstances that will lower costs for companies and reduce the time involved for the process.

The ministry said it would also provide a more flexible approach for the passing of a written special resolution, which would allow it to be passed by a majority of at least two-thirds of the company’s members rather than unanimously. It would also allow conversions of a limited liability company or foundation company to an exempted company, providing…

India v England: Ollie Pope ‘masterclass’ units up vacationers’ ‘dream’, says Joe Root

Ollie Pope’s 148 not out eclipsed his previous Test best against India of 81 at The Oval

England can “dream the dream” after Ollie Pope’s “masterclass” gave them hope of winning the first Test against India, according to Joe Root.

Pope’s epic 148 not out took England to 316-6 in their second innings, a lead of 126 after three days in Hyderabad.

“Go to bed and think of what could be tomorrow, then throw everything at the day,” Root said.

“We know the opportunity that is ahead of us, but are also very aware of the hard work it will take to get there.”

On a superb Saturday of Test cricket, England took the last three India wickets for no runs to bowl the home side out for 436 – a first-innings lead of 190.

The visitors looked in danger of being beaten with two days to spare when they slipped to 163-5, only for Pope to play one of the great overseas knocks by an England batter.

The vice-captain added 112 for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, who made 34, then an unbroken…

FA Cup: Manchester United keep away from upset with win at Newport County

Antony’s finish at Newport was his first goal of the season

Manchester United survived a real FA Cup fourth-round scare at Newport County before finally seeing off the League Two side’s brave attempt at a giant-killing.

United made a flying start and looked to have wrapped the tie up when smooth finishes from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo gave them a 2-0 lead inside 13 minutes.

Alejandro Garnacho also hit the woodwork as United dominated but the team 73 places beneath them on the league ladder, roared on by passionate Welsh followers inside a packed Rodney Parade, staged a stirring fightback.

Bryn Morris’ long-range effort glanced off Lisandro Martinez’s head past United’s debutant keeper Altay Bayindir after 36 minutes before Rodney Parade was rocking and Newport started to dream of causing a sensation two minutes after the break.

Adam Lewis’ cross allowed Will Evans to steal in ahead of Raphael Varane to put Newport level as the hordes of ‘The Amber Army’ celebrated wildly.

India v England: Ollie Pope and Tom Hartley encourage all-time nice victory

Ben Stokes ran out the stubborn Ravindra Jadeja with a superb piece of fielding
First Test, Hyderabad (day four of five):
England 246 (Stokes 70; Ashwin 3-68, Jadeja 3-88) & 420 (Pope 196; Bumrah 4-41)
India 436 (Jadeja 87, Rahul 86, Jaiswal 80; Root 4-79) & 202 (Hartley 7-62)
England won by 28 runs
Scorecard

England produced one of their best ever away wins, stunning India with a 28-run victory in a heart-stopping finish to the first Test in Hyderabad.

Inspired by one of the all-time great innings by Ollie Pope and a beguiling 7-62 from debutant spinner Tom Hartley, England set India 231 to win, then hustled the hosts out for 202 in the final over of the extra half-hour at the end of the fourth day.

Beating a team that had lost only three of their previous 46 home Tests is remarkable in itself, but England did it with a vastly inexperienced attack and with senior spinner Jack Leach hampered by injury.

England recovered from a first-innings deficit of 190 – only twice before in Test history have…

Cambodia forfeited T20 worldwide in opposition to Indonesia amid allegations of ‘big errors’ by umpires

Cambodia became an Associate member of the International Cricket Council in 2022

A men’s T20 international match was conceded after the batting side refused to play amid allegations of home umpires “making huge mistakes”.

Cambodia had reached 77 in their sixth T20I external-link against Indonesia when batter Luqman Butt was out caught behind.

Cambodia declined to continue playing and Indonesia were awarded the game by the umpires in a rare example of a concession made during a match.

The ICC said they “don’t comment on match officials’ decisions”.

Details of the match, played in Bali on 23 November 2023, had been scarce but BBC Sport has now received statements from the Cricket Association of Cambodia (CAC) and the ICC.

Cambodia captain Manish Sharma decided the next batter would not enter the field of play because of grievances over “multiple issues” throughout the series, with a perceived incorrect decision to give out Butt the final straw.

CAC allege that the “umpiring level was not up…

Australia v West Indies: Shamar Joseph leads vacationers to victory

Shamar Joseph has taken 13 wickets in his debut series
Second day-night Test, Brisbane (day four):
West Indies 311 & 193: McKenzie 41, Athanaze 35
Australia 289-9d & 207: Smith 91*; S Joseph 7-68
West Indies won by eight runs
Scorecard

Shamar Joseph took seven wickets as West Indies won a Test in Australia for the first time since 1997.

The tourists held their nerve in a thrilling finish to win by eight runs, and ensure a drawn two-match series.

Fast bowler Joseph, who hobbled off in tears 24 hours earlier after being injured while batting, finished with 7-68 in Brisbane.

Steve Smith (91) carried his bat for Australia, who lost their first day-night Test match.

Joseph, who quit his job as a security guard just 18 months ago, found plenty of pace at the Gabba to rip through the Australian batting order.

He needed treatment before play – at one stage he considered not even travelling to the ground for day four – but recovered to bowl almost 12 match-winning overs.

Australia had cruised to 113-2…

CMO blames legislation over issues with hemp merchandise : Cayman Information Service

(CNS): Beauty, cosmetic and other products that contain hemp were removed from local store shelves because of local legislation that bans the consumption, use or possession of any cannabinoid product and not due to any directive from the Public Health Department, according to Chief Medical Officer Dr Nick Gent. Even though there is barely a trace of THC in products like hemp soap or hemp seed milk, Cayman’s draconian ganja laws are keeping it out of reach of residents.

In what many saw as an absurd move, products made from or containing hemp and other cannabinoid products with tiny traces of THC, the element that fuels the high in marijuana, have begun disappearing from store shelves. The CMO has taken the heat for this because he issued guidelines to healthcare professionals about the sale of hemp.

While the Misuse of Drugs Law was changed to pave the way for the use of medical marijuana with a prescription, nothing else was changed in the legislation, despite…

Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas launches authorized problem in opposition to ban

American swimmer Lia Thomas, who became the first transgender athlete to win the highest US national college title when she triumphed in 2022, is taking legal action in a bid to compete again in elite female sport.

Two years ago governing body World Aquatics voted to stop transgender female athletes from competing in women’s elite races if they have gone through any part of the process of male puberty.

Up until then transgender women could compete as long as they lowered their testosterone levels.

But Thomas, 25, is taking a case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland to try to fight the ban.

“Ms Thomas accepts that fair competition is a legitimate sporting objective and that some regulation of transgender women in swimming is appropriate,” Cas said.

“However, Ms Thomas submits that the Challenged Provisions are invalid and unlawful as they discriminate against her.”

The body said arbitration started in September and “was subject to strict confidentiality rules” but…

Brisbane Heat won the Big Bash for the first time in 11 years with a comfortable 54-run victory over Sydney Sixers.

Josh Brown’s half century and Matthew Renshaw’s 40 off 22 balls helped Brisbane set a competitive total.

Spencer Johnson took a career-best 4-26 as Sixers were all out for 112 in front of a record crowd at the SCG.

“Unbelievable – I feel like we were the best team all year so we deserve the medal,” said the 28-year-old.

“I owe Heat everything, they brought me here last year and I didn’t know where my career was going, so this is pretty cool.”

It is a second BBL title for Brisbane Heat, who had topped the standings during the regular season.

India v England: KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja construct first-Check lead in Hyderabad

Rahul was batting at number four in the absence of Virat Kohli
First Test, Hyderabad (day two of five):
England 246: Stokes 70; Ashwin 3-68, Jadeja 3-88
India 421-7: Rahul 86, Jadeja 81*; Root 2-77, Hartley 2-131
India lead by 175 runs
Scorecard

England already face a huge task to get back into the first Test after India built a healthy lead on day two in Hyderabad.

The home side moved to 421-7, 175 ahead of England’s 246 all out on a pitch destined only to get harder for batting.

KL Rahul, dropped on nought in the first over of the day by Ben Foakes, made 86, while Ravindra Jadeja twice overturned being given out to move to an unbeaten 81.

England’s spinners were improved from the assault they endured on the first evening, but still struggled to combine potency with accuracy. Joe Root’s off-breaks were England’s most dangerous weapon.

Root and debutant Tom Hartley each took two wickets, though England were largely relying on Indian indiscretions for their successes.

Zimbabwe ban Wesley Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta for drug use

Madhevere is considered to be one of Zimbabwe’s up and coming talents

Zimbabwe have banned Wesley Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta from cricket for four months after they were found guilty of recreational drug use.

The pair will not miss any internationals as Zimbabwe do not have a match scheduled in that time.

A third player, batter 30-year-old Kevin Kasuza, has also been suspended pending a hearing, having also tested positive for a recreational drug.

Kasuza last played for Zimbabwe in 2021 and will face a hearing.

Madhevere and Mavuta, both all-rounders aged 23 and 26 respectively, were originally suspended pending a hearing in December after their failed tests.

Madhevere has played two Tests, 36 one-day internationals and 60 T20s; Mavuta four Tests, 12 ODIs and 10 T20 internationals.

Both were in the squad for the one-day series against Ireland in December, which Zimbabwe lost 2-0.

As well as their bans, they have also been fined half of their salaries for the next three months.

Nat Sciver-Brunt named ICC girls’s cricket of the yr for second successive yr

The women’s cricket of the year award is named after former England international Rachael Heyhoe Flint

England all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt has been named Women’s Cricketer of the Year by the International Cricket Council for the second year in a row.

The 31-year-old was England’s player of the series in the drawn 2023 Ashes contest and their leading run-scorer at the T20 World Cup last February.

She scored three centuries in five one-day international knocks in 2023, including two against Australia.

“It feels pretty special. I wasn’t expecting it,” Sciver-Brunt said.

“I am really pleased and proud.

“It is one of the top awards you can win, to come up and compete against your teams but also the rest of the international teams as well.”

Sciver-Brunt, who beat Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu, and Australia pair Ash Gardner and Beth Mooney to the award, also scored well in her two Tests in 2023 – 78 against Australia and 59 in the defeat by India in December.
