Shopping for land must be about conservation, say activists : Cayman Information Service

[ad_1]

(CNS): Over the last few years, the Cayman Islands Government has approved the purchase of several beachfront lots to provide access to the islands’ coastline for locals, stay-over visitors and cruise passengers, as development increasingly blocks off Seven Mile Beach and other popular oceanfront areas. However, local activists are calling for public consultation about how that beachfront property should be developed because adding facilities like parking and toilet blocks will not increase the amount of land held for conservation.

Speaking at the Chamber Economic Forum on Friday, Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan said that one of the reasons why the CIG has been purchasing beachfront property in various locations was to enable locals and visitors to have places to go to enjoy the sun, sea and sand without it feeling overcrowded and help…

Minister says transferring cargo port will profit tourism : Cayman Information Service

Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan (file photo)

(CNS): Tourism and Ports Minister Kenneth Bryan made a speech on Friday in which he promoted what he believes are the benefits of moving the cargo dock from its current location. In an address about sustainable tourism at the Chamber of Commerce Economic Forum, he said that moving the dock away from the tourism area would almost double the space available for cruise operations and allow the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands to operate during the daytime. Bryan said the port was struggling to cope with the volume of imports, driven by what he said was organic population growth.

The minister said nothing about where he would like to see the cargo port moved to, but he said a business case was being developed by local consultants KPMG and Stantec, the international design consultants involved in the ORIA airfield redevelopment. The results of this report will help the Cayman Islands Government decide whether the cargo port…

Lionel Messi: Followers angered as World Cup winner fails to play in Hong Kong

Lionel Messsi sits on the bench during a friendly match in Hong Kong
Lionel Messi (centre) joined Inter Miami last summer from Paris St-Germain and is contracted to the Major League Soccer side until 2025

Angry fans in Hong Kong booed Inter Miami during a pre-season friendly after Lionel Messi did not play.

The Argentina World Cup winner, 36, who had a hamstring injury, was left on the bench as Inter beat a local League XI 4-1 in front of almost 40,000 fans.

There were chants of “refund”, while a speech by Inter co-owner David Beckham was drowned out by booing.

The Hong Kong government said match organisers Tatler Asia may face a reduction in funding.

“Regarding Messi not playing the match today, the government, as well as all football fans, are extremely disappointed about the organisers’ arrangement. The organiser owes all football fans an explanation,” the government’s major sports events committee (MSEC) said.

“The MSEC will take follow-up actions with the organiser according to the terms and conditions, which includes reducing the amount of funding…

Six Nations 2024: Fascinating chaos in Cardiff as Wales fall simply brief in opposition to Scotland

They say things always look clearer after a good night’s sleep. A bit of time and distance to reflect and bring the clarity you are looking for.

That is not applicable on every occasion. Wales’ 27-26 defeat against Scotland in a Six Nations spectacular at the Principality Stadium is one of those times.

It remains difficult to comprehend what we witnessed in Cardiff on Saturday evening. Most would agree it is one of the most remarkable and entertaining matches you are likely to witness.

Rarely has the old cliche about a game of two halves been more applicable, with Scotland building a 27-point advantage that was almost hauled back by Wales, only for the away side to cling on and win by a point.

As poor as Wales were in the first half – and they were dreadful – Warren Gatland’s side excelled in the second. Flip that scenario for Gregor Townsend’s side as their discipline disintegrated.

After dominating the opening 45 minutes, the visitors came close to being overwhelmed and almost falling…

Afcon 2023: Ronwen Williams saves 4 spot kicks as South Africa beat Cape Verde on penalties

Ronwen Williams denied Gilson Benchimol with a superb save in second-half added time of normal time and stopped four penalties as South Africa beat Cape Verde

Ronwen Williams saved four spot kicks to help South Africa reach the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on penalties following a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde.

Bebe, Willy Semedo, Laros Duarte and Patrick Andrade were all denied in the shootout by the outstanding Williams, who also made a spectacular late save to tip Gilson Benchimol’s first-time strike against the woodwork and ensure the gruelling quarter-final entered extra time.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha made two exceptional saves in quick succession shortly after extra time began to deny Mihlali Mayambela and Teboho Mokoena.

South Africa will now have the chance to avenge their defeat to Nigeria on their last appearance in the Afcon semi-finals, when they were beaten 2-0 by the Super Eagles in 2000.

The 1996 champions will attempt to bridge a 24-place gap in…

Six Nations 2024: Wales 26-27 Scotland – Scots survive beautiful comeback

Duhan van der Merwe has scored 23 tries for Scotland
Wales (0) 26
Tries: Botham, Dyer, Wainwright, Mann Cons: Lloyd 3
Scotland (20) 27
Tries: Schoeman, Van der Merwe 2 Cons: Russell 3 Pens: Russell 2

Scotland withheld a stunning Wales comeback to hang on for a first victory in Cardiff in 22 years.

Gregor Townsend’s side raced into a 27-0 lead in 43 minutes with two Duhan van Der Merwe tries, a Pierre Schoeman score and 12 Finn Russell points.

Wales responded with tries from James Botham, Rio Dyer, Aaron Wainwright and Alex Mann in a stunning second-half performance.

But Scotland wrapped up the one-point victory.

It was a Six Nations spectacular that was transformed after Wales made a number of changes at half-time.

Head coach Warren Gatland turned to youth with their barnstorming performance in the second half, as the hosts were unrecognisable to the timid first-half display when Scotland were in total control.

Player-of-the-match Wainwright was outstanding, while replacement scrum-half Tomos…

Six Nations 2024: Italy 24-27 England – Guests come from behind for slim win in Rome

Italy: (17) 24
Tries: A Garbisi, Allan, Ioane Con: Allan 2, P Garbisi Pen: Allan
England: (14) 27
Tries: Daly, Mitchell Con: Ford Pen: Ford 5

England dominated the second half to come from behind and launch their Six Nations campaign with victory in Italy.

Alex Mitchell’s try after the interval overturned a narrow deficit before George Ford’s boot edged England clear.

The Azzurri had threatened a first win over England as Alessandro Garbisi and Tommaso Allan scored either side of an Elliot Daly finish for the visitors.

Monty Ioane scored a late consolation and earned a losing bonus point in Italy’s smallest defeat by England.

Victory for the visitors, meanwhile, ended their run of four opening-game defeats in the Six Nations.

Jamie George took over the captaincy reins while head coach Borthwick also gave five England debuts for the first time since seven players won their first cap against Scotland in 2012.

Fraser Dingwall and man of the match Ethan Roots impressed from the start before Fin…

George Balderson: Lancashire all-rounder indicators new deal till 2026

George Balderson has been a key member of Lancashire’s Championship and One-Day Cup sides

All-rounder George Balderson has signed a new contract with Lancashire to run to the end of the 2026 season.

The 23-year-old academy graduate made his debut in 2020 and has played 54 games for the county in red-ball and 50-over cricket.

Balderson scored more than 700 runs in County Championship Division One last summer, including two hundreds, and also took 23 wickets.

“As a squad we are looking to push on and win silverware now,” he said.

“It has been brilliant to play so much first-team cricket, and to be part of such a talented squad competing at the top end of the County Championship and in the knockout stages of the white ball competitions.”

Balderson, a former England under-19 captain, averages 33 runs from his 48 innings with the bat in red-ball cricket, and has 66 wickets in total – but he has yet to play in the T20 Blast.

He said: “Individually I am always looking to take the next steps…

ECB inviting counties to run top-tier girls’s sides from 2025

Southern Vipers overcame The Blaze to win the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy at Northampton in September

Up to £5m of extra yearly funding will be pumped into women’s cricket as part of an overhaul of the domestic game.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) wants three tiers in the sport from 2025 onwards.

It has now invited applications to run professional sides, in a departure from the regional model introduced in 2020.

Since then eight centrally-funded teams have competed, but counties are being offered the chance to bid to take over and rebrand those teams from 2025.

As part of the plans the ECB has pledged to invest £4m to £5m per year into the women’s professional game between 2025 and 2028, taking its annual investment to £16m.

Under the ECB scheme the existing eight regional teams will become tier one clubs, owned and run by one of the first-class counties or the MCC, and will compete in T20 and 50-over competitions.

The 18 counties and MCC have until March to submit their…

Ministry seeks public assist to form housing coverage : Cayman Information Service

The Light House Gardens Project (Phase 3)

(CNS): An open public consultation has begun to help shape a much-needed policy to address the chronic shortage of affordable housing and other challenges in the local property market created by the ability of overseas residents to buy property here with no restriction or annual taxes.

The Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport and Development (PAHITD) said it is looking for “innovative ways to alleviate housing and sheltering challenges that our most vulnerable residents face and decrease the gap between Caymanians and their ability to purchase affordable homes”.

No draft policy or relevant guidelines have been supplied, and the inter-ministerial task force created in April 2022 to address the housing crisis in the Cayman Islands has still not made any of its findings public. It therefore appears that the government is looking for random ideas and starting this process from scratch.

A…

Lewis Hamilton: Mercedes driver will be a part of Ferrari in 2025 on a multi-year deal

Hamilton’s switch to the Italian team is one of – if not the biggest – driver transfer Formula 1 has ever seen.

He is set to partner Charles Leclerc in 2025, leaving Spaniard Carlos Sainz facing his last year as a Ferrari driver.

Hamilton joined Mercedes from McLaren for the 2013 season and secured six of his seven championships with the team.

He also won 82 of his record 103 races with the Silver Arrows.

Team principal Toto Wolff said the pairing of Mercedes and Hamilton “has become the most successful the sport has seen”.

“And that’s something we can look back on with pride,” he added.

Hamilton said: “I will be forever grateful for the incredible support of my Mercedes family, especially Toto for his friendship and leadership and I want to finish on a high together.

“I am 100% committed to delivering the best performance I can this season and making my last year with the Silver Arrows, one to remember.”

Sainz confirmed via X, formerly Twitter, he will depart Ferrari at the end of…
